$100,000 for a Bottle of Wine! Just, Why?

This is great fun, of course, but welcome to the world of highly allocated luxury products.

You want to go on the waiting list for a GT3 RS? How many 911's have you bought from us in the last decade?

You want a stainless steel Daytona? How much have you spent on jewelry? How many gold and diamond Datejusts have you bought?

You'd like a bottle of 25 year old Pappy Van Winkle? (Actually I don't know how you get on that list...)

The interesting (unanswerable) question here is if there's a reverse allocation at work. Did buying the 2015 at $40,000 or so give you access to the other wines at a mere $6K (probably less than $2K wholesale)? And it's for show for their wine awards. Because actually opening an 8 year old Grand Cru Bordeaux (which this would be if he'd used the traditional grapes of Bordeaux) would be criminal! It probably needs at least 12 more years to think about peaking.

Don't think of it as inventory; it's marketing and advertising...

Sorry but I highly doubt the majority of Celebrity guests can afford any of that much less these bottles of wine.  They are probably sailing in private yachts.

Sorry, but looking at a random 11 night cruise from Southampton to Portugal and the Canaries, a Celebrity Suit (not Royal, Penthouse, etc.) starts at $10,643 per person, so well over $21K for two. A Daytona retails for $15,100. There are plenty of things people on Celebrity can afford. There are almost certainly some here (not me) who can afford that bottle of wine. Whether there's anyone here who'd actually buy it is a different question.

Even if you COULD afford $100k on a single bottle, would it be this bottle?  Other than the rarity factor, I think not....

Agreed this cannot be the best use of X's financing. Issuing bonds at double digit yields during the pandemic so they can tie up this amount of dollars in inventory that will never turn over.

There is a big difference between a buying an expensive watch which will more than likely keep it's value than drinking a $6000 bottle of wine.  Still highly doubt there are many who sail Celebrity which would shell that out for wine.

But they shelled out over $21K for the suite which has no value once they leave it. They bought the experience. That's what they're buying with the bottle of wine. And I agree, most people won't shell out the $6000 either. Certainly not on a cruise ship. We're not talking Per Se or Eleven Madison Park or even Le Gavroche here. Some will totally splurge because the whole cruise is a splurge (I'm assuming those wines would also be in the specialties). I love wine and am willing to pay for good wine, but I can't imagine paying that for a single bottle of wine!

And I still say again the key aim to offering this line of wines is for their Wine Spectator awards they've had for years. Which is marketing, not sales.

I have seen people purchase upwards of 80k in the art auctions.  But does one spend more on a bottle of wine than they spend on their cabin?

How many Scotches did they have in their package on the way to dinner...  🙂

I wonder if some of these people have art stores and resell these items.

So I looked this 100k wine up which sells for 33k.  It is from ungrafted vines that gives you the closest taste to 19th century wines that are possible.

I will have to ask for a taste in a wine tasting ... 🙂 🙂

Finally - something I know the answer to!  First - you have to purchase very frequently from the SAME liquor store ALL the time.  Second - you have to be a big purchaser in a small pool of purchasers.  Then, the stores are allocated some bottles.  The stores hold a drawing for these special buyers to be able to purchase their allocations.  IF you are chosen - you can then purchase a bottle.  Now, after you have actually been the selected lucky person to purchase a bottle of Pappy  (because the store my only get 1 25 year and a few 15 and 12 year) and then purchased the bottle, you will find that you have also gained many new friends.

So if you order the 100k bottle of wine,  do they bring it to the table or do they pour it in the back 🙂🙂

They will pour it at your table and put on a show. How else do they justify the  fat tip?

Oh I was just wondering as in at 25K a glass,  how do you know you are getting the wine that you purchased.  I suppose that if they uncork it at the table and you examine the bottle that should be good enough?  How do you know that it is the real wine?

I know that they have art counterfeits.  What about wine counterfeits?

Asking for a friend 🙂

Good idea, but no. I can’t imagine booking one of those enormous suites unless I had a much larger travel budget, and I intended to host a wild party😈 In that eventually you - of course - shall receive an invitation😎

sr - I will make sure that I Am available for that party and likewise, I trust were I to book an IS you would be available for mine, likewise...

I always provide at least a six (6) week advance notice...

Cheers and bon voyage

Celebrity probably purchased the bottle as a bonus for the genius executive who thought that "testing" vaping in casinos with no advance notice, so that no actually useful data could be obtained via the test, was a good idea.

Then they figured they may as well try to sell it, because... duh!

Holy Cow-- It's a misprint --

When someone was typing up the menus they got all mixed up and wrote $ 100,000 instead of $ 100 and nobody proof-read it prior to sending for print.

I'll bet, at every table someone asks the Sommelier :

" How many of the $100K bottles of wine have you sold " ?

LOL--the answer --- " On the last cruise we sold 3 , but none on this cruise so far ".

Who's going to spend that kind of money on a bottle of wine ?

( It's ok, I get it--- It's none of my business how anyone spends their money )

I doubt Ralph Kramden , winner of the " Safest Bus Driver " award would have spent that much on a bottle of wine or even stayed in a suite.

pb I keep waiting to be on the same sailing for such great hospitality on your part... LOL

Please do not forget me when you are ready to splurge!!!

Cheers and bon voyage
