Beautiful sunset about 25 minutes ago.  The only problem was that Solstice was sailing into the sunset which meant that it would be hard to find outdoor railspace.  Predictably, when I got to Deck 11 forward( 15 minutes before sunset), there was already a bunch of people crowded around the rail.

Oh, and as soon as I posted Post #342, a fourth problem developed with our cabin (8166).  The bathroom light switch started to malfunction.  When we were getting ready for dinner, the lights in the bathroom would start flickering wildly and the bathroom light switch was making distressing crackling noises.  For that problem we called Guest Services immediately and a mechanic came in to change out the light switch while we were eating.  Problem is now solved although the light switch color doesn't match the other light switches in the cabin.  But, we are good!

I attended the 8 pm star gazing session led by Kelly Beatty up at the Rooftop Terrace.  My wife stayed in our cabin while I went up there to attend.  I got there about 15 minutes late and I was surprised at the decent number of people who attended.  The session involved identifying naked eye objects (no telescope, no binoculars).  For the most part, Kelly, used his green laser pointer to point at and identify the bright stars in the sky such as Sirius and Arcturus.  But the cloudless sky was not very transparent because of the heavy humidity in the air and the smoke from Summit's stack.  So Kelly was unsuccessful in showing the audience the famous Southern Cross which was hanging very low in the southern sky (Southern Cross cannot reasonably be seen from most of the mid and northern USA).  Also there were no bright planets out in the sky at that time either.  Anyway he did an excellent job when you consider what he had to work with.

Has the Summit been "Revolutionized" yet? Hearing about all these maintenance issues makes me quite wary of it.

Yes, Summit was Revolutionized in 2019.  We are all aware of the changes to the look of the ship from that dry dock. Most of the problems I’ve seen are “beneath the hood” which would not necessarily have been addressed.

Thanks for the great review.

When I was on the Summit in February 2024, none of the hot tubs were working. Not hot and no jets. When I asked the pool attendant how to turn them on I was told you can't. I am wondering if that situation has been fixed?

Been that way since Nov 2021.  Were told they were broken but really every last one?

The hot tubs are hot, but not super hot. The “jets” do put out a bit of current, but not enough to make bubbles. The original switches have been removed/capped.

Here is what the dining room looked like when we last sailed on her in Aug 2010.

I have always liked the Millennium class MDR because of its two story wall of windows that look out at the back of the ship.  Century class ships were built that way as well and so 5 out of the first 6 ships we took with Celebrity had this design and it represents the good old days in my mind.

Hi

I had a very enjoyable Med cruise on this last week,,,believe it was Celebrity Mercury,,,the windows are still there.

If you look at the upcoming schedule, you will see that there are no cruises listed for the Summit between January 4 and February 25 next year. When we were on the ship several weeks ago, we were told it is going in dry dock for some major work, so hopefully all of the problems will be addressed.

That was because the air pump that supplies all the hot tubs was broken. getting parts for things like that for a 20+ year old ship can sometimes require replacing an entire unit if parts are no longer available. A New and different pump can require work that's only practical during a drydocking.

I had to look it up to be sure: Marella Explorer is the old Century!  We took our first Celebrity cruise on Century during her inaugural year in 1996.  The three Century class ships were Century, Galaxy, and Mercury.

We had one of the middle row of cabins in your photo.  Back then, there were no balconies for that row of cabins.  Thank you for posting!

If you are directing that question to me, what subject could I possibly make a living at? 😃

omg you know so many subjects!

How about your travels?

it's not  to make a living but you and wife would get nice cruises on diff ships, impart knowledge  and meet nice people!   Just a thought!

Our first Celebrity cruise was on Summit, then cruised on Mercury & Century.  I sure miss the Century class!
