Not sure how they maintain positive pressure in the cabin, if they are just using an open duct from outside.  This also brings in warm, humid air that the cabin's fan coil unit would need to handle.

Not saying that the control systems are not advanced, but that the cost to install these motor operated dampers on every single cabin with an IV or balcony is immense, and not sure it is worth the cost.  There also seems to be issues on some ships with the IV windows creaking and groaning, so this may not be a completely thought out idea.  Not to mention that after the Viking incident in Antarctica, with IV style windows, and the recommendations to re-evaluate the strength of the windows and frames, that even more cost in retrofitting may not happen.

The outside duct , is probably connected to a MUA unit , 

Really, without a set of mechanical drawning in front of us , we are just speculating on the design , and we all know every mechanical engineer will have their own preference for a design that will make us scratcher heads🤔😉😁

We were on the Ascent last month in the Mediterranean and in a Sky Suite.  We left our balcony doors open four nights on a nine night cruise.  The weather was very pleasant for the whole cruise.  Our cabin got a little warm at night with just the a/c on, but with the balcony doors open at night, it was heaven.  We closed them each morning.

With the balcony doors shut you control the temperature so why didn't you just turn down the room stat?

Second question did opening the balcony doors in your suite turn off the aircon as it does when you open the window in an IV cabin?

Yes, in our case it turned off the heat. Which was a blessing!

My Wife and I always find our room too warm…travel fans have helped..

 

in a cold climate I could see having the door open as a great thing..

We tried turning down the room stat, but it just wouldn't cool enough. It's like the a/c would just stop at a certain temp.  Yes, the a/c would turn off when we opened the doors.  We had such a nice breeze when we opened the doors.

thanks clarifies everything:

On M and S Classes opening balcony doors does not turn off the aircon.

On E Class opening the windows in IV cabins and balcony doors in other cabins does turn off the aircon.
