My Opinion Regarding Upgrades

cruisePRN

Recommended Posts

This is an interesting thread, and thanks, Rev, for supplying the source of the perk. We are diamond, and recently sailed with a couple who are way on past D+. They had made the comment that they were upgraded on every cruise; on this particular sailing they had been upgraded from an inside (don't know the exact category) to an OS. However, they were the only D+ members on this sailing.

I frankly don't understand why anyone would have an issue with loyalty being rewarded, or try to imply that the OP was wanting something for nothing. It's totally up to RCI what their perks are, but it would be nice to have them consistently applied.

BTW, we've never received a surprise upgrade, but were upgraded on the sailing I mentioned from a GS to an OS due to problems with the room. You could definitely get spoiled with that... :D

When you start paying for your own cruises you will understand perhaps that loyalty starts with the first cruise. However once a decision is made on rewards it needs to be consistant and no, just because you are platinum doesn't make you the same as someone who is D+. You haven't earned that status yet - or at least your parents haven't and until then you should take what you get when you haven't earned it and be happy instead of grumping on about people who do not get it when they are entitled to it.

someday i will:rolleyes:

I really don't feel ENTITLED, too much of that is going on in our society these days, and it's going to get much worse I'm afraid, especially now.

We've never had the joy of an upgrade, and I certainly understand that the staterooms should be sold at the highest price they can go for, prior to being put in the pool for upgrades. Would we love one, ABSOLUTELY, if we get one, FANTASTIC, if not, oh well, maybe next time.

I'm thrilled that we still have the Concierge Lounge, that may be taken away one of these days. I think we should be grateful for what we have.

Last year I sailed on Voyager of the Seas. I told them first dinner seating and got second seating. Here's the policy on the C and A benefit page

Cruise Planning Benefits

con_bulletgrey_ico.gif Exclusive access to Loyalty Specialist for you or your travel agent con_bulletgrey_ico.gif Preferred seating in main dining room

What part of preferred seating in the main dining room is hard to grasp. I had to bring this benefit to the attention of the Maitre D to get switched because he refused to switch us telling us first seating was full. I had book this cruise a year in advance so there was no excuse for this.

When we sail we book the cabin we want to sail in and pay for it. That way we are assured of the comfort and the view we want.
That's lovely. So when you make D+ they can pass you over for your upgrade and give it to those of us who earned it and want it.

That D+ ship sailed long ago.;)

I book what I want and pay for it. Most often there are no "upgrades" to offer me.:D

I'm sure many D+ have benefited from my choice.

If you feel you are entitled to something and aren't getting it by all means complain until you do get it.:)

Why not book the cabin you want?

There are so many D+ members that upgrades are few and far in between.

If you see a higher Cat. 2or3 weeks before sailing ,why not pay for the upgrade?

I book the cabin I will be happy with not waiting for the special one I may get with a free upgrade.

P/s yes I am D+ with 53 cruises. Never got a upgrade and don't expect one soon.

I just went to RCL website and pulled up C&A benefits. I saw nothing about an upgrade for D/D+.

It is not a diamond perk, it's a D+ amenity

I always book a cabin I want, that's not the point. If the next higher category has at least 3 cabins available why should I pay for it when RCL tells me this is a perk for D+. If you patronize a certain store that offers a punch card with your tenth visit free wouldn't you expect that reward after your ninth visit? It's about honoring ones own reward procedure. If American Airlines said to me sorry you earned enough miles for the clock radio but we don't want to give it to you It would cause me to fly United.

As to your comment there are so many D+ members, well C and A tells me there are a few hundred, not really that many when you consider they have thousands and thousands of berths to fill each sailing. There are many more Diamond members which takes ten cruise credits which can be earned very fast. Diamond Plus requires over 24 cruises.

Where have you seen it offerd on theyre site???

I never stated I saw it on their site. I have not gone and looked. I am familiar with Platinum benefits because I am Platinum. Likewise, I am assuming/trusting that the OP

knows what her benefits/amenities are. Are you Diamond Plus?

no we are platinum about to be diamond and we just got an upgrade on our upcoming cruise we didnt ask for it they just gave it to us and like i said in this economy they need to keep cruisers on theyre ships because like i said think about it if you had a couple cruises on a couple lines and rci just gave you an upgrade and you not D or D+ your next cruise would probably be on one of theyre ships because of this its they are trying to make buisness. and i have never heard or seen that any level member is entitled to any updates just what was said on here.

I agree with your theory on why some get upgrades and others don't. I've seen the same thing on HAL with new cruisers to the line versus Mariner Members. I've cruised RCI, Celebrity, Carnival, Princess and HAL. As for myself, I book a category I will be happy in and have no expectations of an upgrade. However, I do believe that IF a cruiseline is going to offer an amenity/perk they should honor it.

Patti, I'm still disappointed that we weren't going to do the Jewel together in September. We're doing Serenade instead 9/19.

Yes, it would have been nice to finally meet............however Serenade is a good choice.

I just went to RCL website and pulled up C&A benefits. I saw nothing about an upgrade for D/D+. I saw something about amenities for but that doesn't sound like upgrades to me. The website didnot go into detail about the amenities offered.

Just my 2 cent observation.

You won't find it............it's their well kept secret.

:) You know by now not to try to figure out how the Upgrade Fairy works. Even she doesn't know how she does it!! ;)

I think you are right.

It is not a diamond perk, it's a D+ amenity

I disagree..............it is definitely not a D+ amenity............if it were then all D+ on a particular sailing would be entitled to that amenity...........or an upgrade. Don't think that's going to happen.

D+ benefits (which is listed on the back of the most recent C&A magazine) includes the personalized amenity that you can select from their list 2-3 weeks prior to your cruise. D+ amenity is the crystal ship that you receive after you have reached 30 cruise credits which continues when you reach 40, 50, etc.

Being D+ does have its benefits but being upgraded is more of a benefit of reaching D+ with lots of cruise credits..............or luck of the draw when upgrades are available on any sailing. They start at the top and work their way down.

And believe it or not.............there are some that decline the upgrade because they have booked the cabin and location that they wanted when itineraries first came out and don't want to change.

A few hundred Diamond Plus members? That's good information to

know. Thanks.

I do book what stateroom I am comfortable in--Owner's Suites so

there is no room for an upgrade. On my upcoming cruise I booked a

Grand Suite so this was the first time that I was entitled to an upgrade. At 21 days out there were 3 OS's available so my chances looked really good but slowly the OS's disappeared. At 14 days there was one left. I did not get it. Yes, I'm ticked.
