Theft in stateroom on Carnival

Anything of value has been put in the safe, or is on my person, and I've yet to lose anything.
It's almost worrying (not to me personally...) how many people are aware of a safe in the cabin

- yet they don't or won't use it! --That's odd!

The cabin safe we had on Victory opened and closed with nothing more technical than a swipe of my credit card.

Now that's difficult stuff, huh?

Into the safe on a daily/Going Ashore basis went..

any spare cash, her bling, any extra cameras and/or lenses.

It's just amazing how much stuff can fit in there, man!

Why take a chance in today's wacky world?

Hello

I HAVE had something stolen from a carnival stateroom. At the end of Novemeber 2008 my husband and I were on the Carnival Splendor. After ariving on ship we ate lunch and walked around for a while. After a hour or so I decided that we need to go to the room so I could drop off my big ol' heavy purse and my husband could drop off his hoodie. And then we could walk around somemore. We dropped off the stuff and walked around. About 1 and half hours later we returned to the room to see if the luggage had arrived. It had. When I walked in the room I noticed right away that my PURSE WAS NOT IN THE ROOM . I immeditaly found the room stewart and asked her if he had moved my purse. She accused me of not being in the right room. I pointed out that my room key worked. She then told me that Carnival is not responsible for items in the room and that I should go to the pursers/information desk and file a lost report. I did right away. Time passed...Securty arrives searches all my other luggage for my purse..I guess they thought I had packed my purse and forgot?? Thirty minutes later they find my purse. I searched it and found that everything is in there credit cards, passports, Drivers license, medicine EXCEPT my husbands Nintendo DS. The games and charger were in there but not the DS. I was very happy we had our passports back and I kissed them. Securty then searched all our luggage looking for the Nintendo DS :(. Needless to say it was never found and on the last day of the cruise carnival sent/gave us a letter saying

On behalf of Carnival Crusie lines, we thank you for choosing the Carnival splendor for your vacation. Our guests are important to us we appreciate your patronage. Whith regard to your Nintendo DS that is missing, unfortunately we have been unable to locate it. I have enclosed a copy of the report and your refrence # for your records. You may contact out corporate office on your return home, the address and telephone number are listed below. Should you locate the itme before leaving the ship, please advise us so that we may update our records. Carnival Cruise lines guest relations Department 3655 NW 87th Ave. Miami, flordia 33178-2428

No mention of how they found my purse...

Moral of the story...from now on I will put my purse in the safe and my husbands wallet in the safe and all of our medicine. And if it's not nailed down or in the safe consider it steal able.

You can purchase extra insurance to cover contents in your stateroom and Carnival would be responsible:confused:

I was wondering about that too?

You can always put a luggage strap combination lock around your safe as well if you don't trust the staff about the safes. I never had to resort to that as we have never had a problem though (crossing fingers)

While on spring break several of us had valuables stolen out of our stateroom. Management said they investigated and could find no one liable (probably means they fired the stateroom attendant). They said since extra insurance was not purchased to cover contents in the stateroom, they are not responsible.

I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has ever had this experience and how was it handled by the cruise company.:(

Been on several cruises and never thought abut hiding valuables!

Realistically how could someone break-into your room??

Unless they didn't make sure the door was closed behind them when they left!

Your keys are coded only to your room.

Not sure how that would happen!!!

Spring Break ----> lots of drinking ----> cabin hopping ----> unknown people in cabin -----> missing stuff.

You should ask yourself how many times there might have been people you didn't know in your cabin. I could be off here, so sorry if I am, but like the other people said, theft is generally very low!

I left my ipod, cameras, cash, and dirty underwear out, and none was touched.

I agree!

Also btw you don't wear jewelry to "impress" people.

You may not, darling ..but I sure do!

I also flash my Platinum card to let lesser people know just how rich and important I am!

I have status to maintain. ;)

Meooww! :D

i am still waiting for 2 items to "show up" for me too. they were left in the stateroom by my kids (as opposed to being taken from it during sailing), but apparently, they were either not found by the crew when they cleaned it and were taken by the next pax, or, they were found, but chose not to turn them in. this was a first for us. we are disappointed. more in that they weren't turned in than the value itself. :(

i am glad you recovered most of your items.:)

You may not, darling ..but I sure do!

i hate to tell ya this, but from what i understand from a friend who just cruised last week, your platinum card now looks basically identical to the gold card with the new card changes...and the staff can barely notice.

It is so easy to steal on a cruise ship if you wanted to . Two weeks ago i was on the carnival liberty I left the pool to go back to my room. When i arrived the door was propped open and my cabin steward was in the next cabin talking to the passenger.i guess she had a question or problem . I went in got my sunblock exited the cabin and started down the hall . when it hit any one can walk in .I went back and closed it so he would here it and he did not come out to see who it was .So my point here is anyone could distract him so they could get in you cabin and take what was laying around .. Awalys use the safe or hide in your dirty underwareicon10.gif

so true. i have also read accounts of maintenance men entering cabins while in port through unlocked balcony doors, so ALWAYS lock your balcony.

My wife had a $3,000 diamon necklace stolen on our Carnival cruise in March. Our fault we forgot to put it in the safe. Stuff happens and you move on. We never mentioned it to anyone at Carnival. What's the point?

if this is true (that you lost this piece and never said a word about it), then you are doing a terrible disservice to all of us. if a theft of this magnitude occured aboard one of their ships, they should know about it.

if things are not reported, they cannot be investigated, fixed, or "shored up" to prevent this from happening in the future. compensation is a separate issue. just because you believed they wldn't compensate you, doesn't mean you shldn't have made it a matter of record.

You or spouse take all those cruises and you don't wear any bling? When do you wear it? If no one can see it, what good is it.

My thoughts exactly...I have a diamond tennis bracelet..cost an arm and a leg and it is now worth 2 arms, 2 legs and maybe even more, but I never take it off...wherever I go it goes :-)) it's insured...if I get mugged ( as my daughter is often telling me could happen) then I will hand it over immediately...if you have something of value you insure it...ie..house, car, boat..jewelry..etc...only prudent...

We leave jewelry that we are not wearing, and meds etc in our safe. No one has ever stolen anything from our cabin...I do see it is possible though. I guess if something is not being used, it should be in the safe. Even hotel rooms do not guarantee missing items.

Hope you got some resolution.

  • 8 years later...

My wife and I did a Carnival Cruise from Nov.25-Dec.2/17.My wife had her packets of drugs rifled through and an entire bottle of pills taken, some were narcotics.I emailed Carnival Cruise Lines when I got back and have heard nothing, and not likely will.I think this type of thing goes on all the time. These porters earn piddly wages and anything they can get their hands on to steal and make money off of is a bonus.I will never go with Carnival anymore.

Wow. An 8 and a half year old thread. Why would you not carry your medications with you as you are always told to do along with valuables? Porters are not employees of Carnival but rather of the port. It’s best not to cruise then if that’s how you feel.

Ignore all the snooty people 47831.gif,you have a right to be upset. Carnival is slow to nonexistent in responding to this type of email, you may never hear from them . I remember this thread and responded way back then.

My thoughts exactly.

5 cruises...we leave valuables out, never use the safe and have never had anything go missing.

Good luck to the OP.

(Just wanted to add that in 7 years I've been reading CC I don't think I have ever read of anyone having something stolen from their stateroom. Not saying it didn't happen or couldn't happen, just saying that is how rare it must be.)

There was a woman who recently posted that on 3 sep. cruises she had things stolen (jewelry) and the 3rd most recent cruise had a white dress, new with tags, stolen out of her suitcase. I forget her CC name ... but it was pretty recent.

Oops ... didn't see this was an old thread. But someone resurrected it!

WOW, you picked up a 7 year old thread. Most porters are union workers and make over 70/k a year and do not have time to look for your wife's pills. This type of thing does NOT go on all the tome, rarely happens at all. Your assertion that Carnival workers are all crooked is insulting in so many ways.

The porters don't work for Carnival, so way to go Mr. Old-Post-Digger-Upper for putting blame in the wrong place. Maybe you should complain to the port you were at.

Also, it was nice to see some of the old poster names that used to make this site great towards the top of this thread.

No private insurance. She brought because we've been on about 18 cruises and never had a problem. As I said it was our fault as we got careless and forgot to put it in the safe.

Perhaps not consciously. People concerned about looking their best (whether it's clothes or grooming or accoutrements like jewelry) aren't just doing it for themselves. That's human nature (nothing wrong with it) and to think otherwise is naïve at best.
