Do you need advice about Stockholm?

It is not very often that a cruise ship has to tender in Stockholm but it happens occasionally when there are many ships at the same time. From what I have seen the ship has then been at anchor just in front of Gamla Stan. So my guess is that the tender would leave you at Stadsgården, but closer to Gamla Stan than where the cruise ships usually dock. Or it could even be at Gamla Stan, but I think that is less likely.

What the cruise list should say is that your ship arrives from Visby and departs to Helsinki. Someone has made a mistake in the translation to English.

Thank you for your response, that helps me plan our day. :) There are only two other ships in port that day according to the schedule, and they are both listed as docking at Frihamnen, so I don't know why we wouldn't dock at Stadsgården...I like to have a plan for all possible scenarios though.

Regarding the error in translation, the thing is that our ship doesn't call at Visby at all - it arrives from Helsinki and then we have a sea day before returning to Copenhagen.

Sorry, I didn't check your itinerary before answering, but now I can see that it is not only a matter of bad translation, they have the ports completely wrong.

This doesn't guarantee that they are also wrong about where you are booked to dock. I also noted that there is no ship booked at Stadsgården, but they may be holding it for some reason. And all ships don't appear in the list. As an example, we are looking forward to a royal wedding this summer. A royal wedding means the harbour will be full of military ships.

Anyway, it is always a good idea to check now and then where your ship is expected to dock. Changes do happen, even at last minute. I fully agree with your aim to be prepared for all possible scenarios.

The Emerald Princess is arriving in Frihamnen on June 12, 2013 according to the schedule.

As we have such limited time (Arr 07:00 dept 14:00) what strategy do you suggest to visit Vasa and Gamla Stan? and then return to the ship? Bus, taxi, etc. ? How many Krone would we need or can we pay with credit card?

In June the Vasa Museum opens at 8.30, so the best thing would be to be there in time fore when it opens. There is a bus 76 that can take you from Frihamnen to Djurgården bridge. From there it is a short walk across a bridge and on to the museum.

This bus will also continue to Gamla Stan, so after the museum you could get back to the bus stop again. You can also take bus 76 to get back to your ship from Gamla Stan.

You will not be able to pay the driver, you will need a ticket before you get on. Tickets have been sold in a small info kiosk on the quay, just where you get off the ship. A 1 zone ticket costs SEK 36 and can be used within the city area for one hour. I would expect you can pay with a credit card.

There is a nice alternative to get from the Vasa Museum to Gamla Stan and that is to take a ferry. There is a short walk from the Vasa Museum to where the ferry leaves. The ferry ride costs SEK 45 and you pay at the port before you enter the ferry. Credit cads are accepted.

Costs given here could of course change before June 2013.

Here is a link to a map that may be helpful. It shows Frihamnen port, the Vasa Musum and Gamla Stan as well as the means of transport: https://maps.google.se/maps/ms?msid=200939608343314501629.000448dadb8bebb56f079&msa=0

Thanks. If the bus ticket expires within an hour I assume we need to purchase another one in Gamla Stan to return to the boat? Where do we do that?

I realize that the Stockholm Card would be more expensive for what we can accomplish in the time we have BUT would it be more efficient for us?

So much to see--so little time:(

We are also on this cruise that docks in Frihamnen. How long will the bus ride take to get back to the ship from Gamla Stan? Wish we had more time there.

It depends on traffic. But I've checked for Monday next week and it says 16min from Slottsbacken stop (in front of the Royal Palace)

to Frihamnen stop so at least plan for a minimum of 20 minutes maybe even as much as 30 minutes.

Alaskanb and rurn0321, the bus is expected to take 7 minutes from Frihamnen to Djurgården bridge. And to get back from Slussen at the south end of Gamla Stan will take 21 minutes. Of course this all depends on the traffic situation. And there is also the walk from the bus stop to the end of the pier, where it is most likely your ship will be docked. Should you decide to take the ferry from Djurgården to Gamla Stan that would take 10 minutes.

Tickets are valid for one hour after they have been stamped on the bus, not from when you bought them. So you should be able to buy the tickets you think you will need in the morning. But should you be without tickets when you want to get back, they can be bought at Gamla Stan Metro Station, at Pressbyrån by the Metro Station, at 7-Eleven in Västerlånggatan or at Kornhamnstorg Tobak at Kornhamnstorg. Just ask someone how to find them.

The Stockholm card may be convenient but it is expensive if the only thing you will use it for is the Vasa Museum and a cople of bus tickets. And it is not valid for the ferry.

The call list has the Vision (on the 30th of May) at "FÖRTÖJNING PÅ STRÖMMEN" which I understand means we will have to tender to shore. Not sure how accurate that is because it also says Visby is the next stop, which is not true... also RCL's website doesn't list it as a tender port...but if in fact tendering does occur, where would the tender drop us off?[/quote]

Either at Fotografiska Museet at Stadsgården or at Skeppbron in Gamla stan.

The ferry to Wasa/Skansen, called Djurgårdsfärjan departs from the Slussen quay.

Here is another to-do recommendation for Stockholm.

Its a palace called Hallwyl House and its a palace built in the 1890

for Count Walther von Hallwyl and his wife, Wilhelmina.

My parents visited it this summer and they really liked it.

The house and inventories looks more or less the same as

when the palace was in use before deaths of Mr and Mrs Hallwyl.

Its located on Hamngatan 4;

Our ship will dock at Vartahamnen 523 on June 27th. This pier seems to be the lonely step child here. A search shows that several people have asked questions about it over the last few years, but none got an answer. So I'll ask again in case there is anyone with fresh eyes on the subject.

What are the facilities at this pier? An ATM? What is the best way to get to the Vasa from here? Any hints that would help?

Thanks.

Approximately how much would a taxi cost from the cruise pier to the Vasa Museum? We will be there in June on the Prinsendam. Are the taxis metered or are they flat rate?

Does one need cash or do taxis accept credit cards?

usually they will charge a fixed base fee + either per km and or hour.

some like Taxi Stockholm offers a fixed prize if you contact them in advance.

If you need an ATM you should be able to find one at SEB at Hangövägen 21 at Värtahamnen/Frihamnen.

Here are other ATM locations in Stockholm: http://kartor.eniro.se/m/nITkO

your three travel options are Taxi, bus or boat (Sjövägen). Its your pick basically.

Sorry for double post but my editing time limit ran out.

Here are a map : http://www.avidcruiser.com/stockholm/2011/12/07/guide-to-stockholm-berthing-locations/ of ship cocking locations.

Use it together with http://reseplanerare.sl.se/bin/query.exe/en

Its too early to try to find bus/boat connections as the summer time tables won't be available for another couple of months.

Not sure about the exact location of the Värtahamnen 523 but it should be somewhere between Siljateminalen and Frihamsterminalen on this map (scroll map up and to the right):

Bus 76 seems to be the best one. Don't know the name of stop closest to Värtahamnen 523 but going to Vasa you should get off at stop "Djurgårdsbron".

Here is the bus 76 winter table. At the bottom of the table there is a list of all bus stops (hållplatser in Swedish).

Thanks for the info and links. When the summer bus schedule comes out do I out into the TO and FROM boxes to get to the Vasa Museum from Vartahamnen ? Do I need a street or the pier name? Thanks again.

you should fill in to/from like this: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6479/vaertahamenvasamuseet.jpg

the journey planner will suggest that you take the tram from Djurgårdsbron to Wasamuseet,

but that is not necessary since it only some 300-400m to walk.
