It's also worth considering that some cruise lines (maybe all) don't let you combine your future cruise certificate with last minute offers.

Maybe some, but not Princess. If you book a cruise after the final payment date Princess does allow you to use your FCC and does apply the OBC. Of course full balance payment is due very shortly after booking.

It's a Future Cruise Deposit (FCD) to be used as deposit payment on a future booking. If you don't spend $100 of your OBC and buy a FCD and at end of cruise get back your $100 OBC and put it in the bank, you can pretend you bought your FCD with your OBC. It's all a matter of perception.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your comment, but as I understand it, if you don't use your OBC you lose it. Or is there a difference between OBC and On Board Spend?

Some types of OBC are refundable if not used. Some are not refundable if not used.

The OBC is a "use it or lose it" under current rules. No refunds at the end of a cruise for the Future Cruise OBC.

Depends on the type of OBC.

Military OBC, Captain's Circle loyalty OBC and pre-purchased OBC are examples of refundable OBC.

FCC OBC, Princess Visa card OBC and booking amenity OBC are examples of non-refundable OBC.

I'm thinking if I can tolerate cruising, to buy a FCC aboard, and head for the TA when I get back home to make the booking with her due to VERY specific needs due to disabilities!

I would be able to do the Melbourne hotel booking myself but will need her help with the rest of the bookings-I'm too chicken to trust myself booking online with my level of eyesight. I LOATHE those Security asterisks blocking out what I've typed so I can't easily trace a mistake!

You get a receipt (and on a short cruise especially, I'd buy it sooner rather than later, to make sure it goes through. Lots of people take these shorties on purpose to buy FCCs and if the FCC person gets backlogged, you want to make sure your paperwork doesn't fall through the cracks. I try to take care of buying mine when I wake up that first morning onboard. The forms are always available; you can fill it out and drop it in the box without having to wait on his/her formal office hours.). However, for U.S. passengers -- and I can only assume it works the same for you Australians --, the FCC is immediately loaded into our online Princess accounts. So we don't actually need anything in hand to give to/show our TA when it comes time to use it to book. One of the benefits of the digital age.

You will receive an e-mail with the FCD attached. (In some cases you might receive a paper FCD while onboard.)

But all you need to do is tell your TA that you have FCDs and the TA will be able to see them on the Princess website.

My TA is on record. As soon as I purchase a FCC and/or cruise on board, my TA knows about it. She always recommends that I have 2 in the bank (or more).

On short cruises, I have seen stacks and stacks and stacks of FCC in the FCC reps office. I don't trust so wait around until I can hand it to him and watch him/her enter it. I don't bother with a hard copy. On a longer cruise, a receipt is dropped in your cabin mailbox.

THANK YOU! This newbie Blue Card cruiser's learning new things EVERY time I come on Cruise Critic. I'm going to warn the TA that if I survive sailing through the Heads going out of Sydney and the 1st night, I'm going to Future Cruise Sales to invest in at least 1 Future Cruise Credit!

I'm unsure if you can use your onboard credit directly, however you could potentially use OBC in the casino through a slot machine, and then go to the cashier and cash the money out straight away, which will be given to you as cash. This cash could potentially be placed into your bank account which in turn, could pay for a future deposit!

Caribill, also made that same helpful suggestion when I mentioned on another thread how I was planning to budget for taxi fares from the ship to the hotel in Melbourne; from the hotel to the airport the next morning and home from the airport. I was planning to take small coins purses with stashed cash-she suggested purchasing Casino Credit and cashing it out on the final night. BRILLIANT SUGGESTION! It will mean all cruise costs will be organised and I have 10 weeks to save the funds needed for the earlier part of my holiday-meeting up with a favourite aunt, staying with my cousins for a few days, then cruising and returning home.

I hope, through my report on the cruise, to be able to help someone else, as I have personally been helped.

Under 500 days, and eagerly marking each Friday off the calendar as Another Week closer to Sailing!:D

We were offered fcc upto 60 days after returning from our cruise. I ended up buying it when we got home.
