Children and charging to cabin?

I will be travelling with a teen, I have no problems with her charging small purchases to the room. Is there a way to limit daily purchases on her card? Could someone else use the card if she lost it?

You can set up a specific amount to her card with the stipulation that the amount is to last the entire cruise (this sets up the idea of budgeting), or you could refill the amount during the cruise.

Ideally if she lost the card you would go to the Purser's desk, explain the situation, the original card cancelled and a new card issued with any balance transferred to the new card. For all intents and purposes, it's a credit card.

Though I'm pretty sure you can't say "Nothing over $5" per purchase rather you put a lmit on of say $50, so the Child could blow it all in one go.

Losing the card issue. Many youths and adults also wear the card on a lanyard around their neck. Less likely it will be lost.

On a carnival cruise recently I gave my children no charging privileges. My daughter decided to go to a shopping presentation and tried to buy a $25 shopping discount book. As she had to charging privileges they charged it up my husbands account...without his consent... We had to go to guest services and they could not remove it without the shopping consultant... Sadly we had to escalate it further to get it removed. I felt so sorry for the girl at guest services as she could see something improper had been done.

I'm not worried about her over spending, more if she dropped it, not a chance would she wear a lanyard.

For the lanyard.... I get a coil one from the casino, take off the coil. Put the lanyard on the clip and clip it to my belt loop. The card fits easily into my pocket.

Charges that are not yours will be taken off if that ever happens. We have left our card in venues/loungers etc many times on cruises and have never had anyone charge anything.

I will say though on one Princess cruise many years ago my 11 year old son showed up at the DR table with an $800 ring on his finger that was clearly way too big! :eek: Needless to say we marched right back to the store and returned it. I laugh now but at the time it was not too funny. :rolleyes:

She had charging privileges on our last cruise and was fine but she's had a spate of carelessness recently, and we've had to replace house keys, bus passes etc.

I agree that $50 seems like a reasonable amount for the teen. With the idea that it's to last the length of the cruise. One idea just popped into my head. The OP could tell her daughter that any amount remaining from her "cruise allowance" would get that amount in cash at the end.

Last summer I cruised with 4 teens/young adults ages 15, 18, 18 and 21. I thought about setting spending limits on their cards, but decided against it. I bought them all the soda sticker. I told them they were responsible for any other purchases unless they cleared it with me first. I told the oldest that he could buy a few drinks, but anything beyond that he'd have to pay me back. He's not much of a drinker anyway, and I ended up buying him a few when we were together. I think he charged 2 drinks over the course of the week. The other kids bought nothing. They really didn't need to buy anything, since they could already have all the food and soda they wanted. If we'd been on a ship with gelato for sale in the IC, I'd have made an exception for that.

I guess it depends on your kids and their spending habits, and how much you trust them. For us, it just wasn't an issue.

Like all things in life you are going to have to let them become responsible; they will have their own credit card, drive a car, stay out late etc. etc. It is all about trusting them bit by bit and have them learn is the best IMHO. My oldest one once lost his wallet with lots of money.. boy he was pissed, his siblings new the pain.. lets just say that lesson he kept and his siblings also saw they didn't want that kind of pain :D He might have never learned that if we always controlled the "risk" IMHO got to let them fall down to learn.

If she loses the card, go to the Purser's desk. They will cancel the lost one and issue a new one.

In the unlikely event there are unauthorized charges, you can have them removed by going to the Purser's desk.

I agree, she has her own bank account with a debit card which she recently lost and is now awaiting the replacement ;) hence the worry about her having a card with charging on it on the cruise. Hopefully she has learnt from this inconvenience and as she reminds me she had a card no problem on our last cruise but that cruise was shorter.
