Time for Paradise again?

In 1998 when the Paradise came on line as a non-smoking ship, about 24% of Americans were smoking. 20 years later in 2018, the smoking rate is down to 14% of Americans.

The Paradise experiment apparently failed because it was difficult to book groups of people because in any group of people you were likely to have a number of people who smoked.

I think it is time to try it again. Maybe not as stringent as the rules were on the Paradise, but why can't they have at least one ship embarking from a busy port like Miami or Ft Lauderdale, out of the many that leave every week where smokers can have a place on the back of the ship where they can puff away without bothering people with asthma or just a dislike of the smell?

We managed to take a cruise on the Paradise in its inaugural year, and probably would have had several more cruises on her, if they had kept it non smoking. And that would probably be in addition to all the cruises we have taken since, on ships where smoking was allowed, some of which were on other cruise lines. We might have been Platinum status a few years ago. Some of the money spent on those other cruise lines might have been on a Carnival ship that didn't have the smoke.

What say you?

I would like to see a few smoke free ships but I'm not sure it will fly, even now citing your statistic regarding percentage of smokers now versus 20 years ago. The cruise lines have steadily restricted the areas where people can smoke and (depending on the ship) I now usually do not find the second hand smoke to be a significant issue on a cruise.

As a betting man, I'll bet you don't spend much time in the casino when on board. There are some of us non smokers who like to gamble a little, and a cruise is an opportunity to take a vacation with family and friends who don't gamble and it is OK. How many non smokers don't gamble on a ship because of the smoke they smell when walking through on their way to the Main Dining Room?

I will not go in the casino because smoke is a trigger for me. I do not go to land casinos for the same reason. I figure this has saved me a good deal of money over my lifetime!

Somewhere else I heard that the non-smoking ship was hard on the crew, which often came from countries where smoking were more common.

I don't smoke but I cant believe how many people make such a big deal about smokers on cruises. I know it's a dirty habit but for crying out loud altready, get over it. Ships have designated smoking areas that can usually be easily avoided and just about every casino in America has smokers in it. I mean people act like they're going to go into cardiac arrest but just getting a whif of a Marlboro and go into convulsions. These people are more of a nuisance than the smokers and should, in my opinion, just stay home. People whining about the smokers, people whining about the drinkers, people whining aboiut kids, about this, about that ....... Just stay home as the cruise doesn't just belong to you .

For those people that say" people need to get over it about smokers" never had an asthma attack simply because someone had to blow their dirty smoke in your face on their way to the pool or dinner. Or want to go into the casino.

People with COPD (asthma, emphysema or other lung illnesses) have just as much right to go out in this world and enjoy it, including cruises. Without the fear of rude people with a bad habit.

Besides who in their right mind would like to have not only smoke in their face or their germs as well.

Not for nothin, but ALL people deserve to go on a cruise and not be harassed for how they do it. That includes smokers. You are attempting to be the arbiter of who gets to do what, and that is a worse habit than smoking, by far,

First... asthma does not fall under COPD.. just so you are aware.

Yep, EVERYONE has the right to go out and enjoy this world. If you venture into a smoking area, you will get smoke in your face... it's not rude - it is a result of being in the area that you are in. Also.. let's be clear - it is NOT a bad habit, it is an addiction. Your beef is with the tobacco companies, and the US government for putting/allowing the highly addictive substances, which had it's intended affect of causing loyalty, into a consumer product.

Not all humans are the same.. some struggle with quitting, while others do not. Some do not even want to quit, but that is usually the addiction talking, even though that person may not realize it.

Bottom line... you know the smoking is allowed in certain areas, so if you cannot tolerate it, then you should make the adult choice and not go!

OP - I think CCL will change the Paradise, or any other cruise ship for that matter, to non smoking - when they believe it will cause that ship to be more profitable than it is with smokers on board. They are a business after all.

Actually, you might lose that bet because DW and I do like to gamble on a cruise. ;)

I did equivocate just a bit in saying that I "usually" don't find smoke to be a significant issue because it really depends on the ship - the location of the casino, how effective the air filtration is and where the supposed smoke free areas are. Some ship casinos are unbearable but I'm finding in the last few cruises that it's tolerable, at least tolerable long enough for us to drop a few dollars in the house kitty!

If the trend towards lower percentages of smokers continues, I think that will happen. In the twenty years since the Paradise was built, it has dropped from 24% to 14%. That trend actually started 50 years ago. The rate of change has increased as well, so it may happen sooner rather than later.

Carnival has 27 ships in its fleet right now. On the other media page concerning CCL, I suggested the change to one out the 27 ships and one person thought it would be the end of his world. Someone who had been on 5 cruises this year already and 2 more coming this year. he didn't even know that smoking was allowed on the same decks where the pools are. I think he finally gave up trying to argue his side, but he never came back to acknowledge I might have been right about some of what he was wrong about.

If there are multiple ships leaving South Florida every week, how tough would it be for smokers to avoid one ship leaving from that area?

Unless I am missing something, Carnival only has 26 ships right now, unless you are already counting Panorama.

If Carnival thought they would benefit financially from having a smoke free ship, they would already have one (again).

Evidently all 14% of the people on a cruise who are smokers are at the casino bar on embarkation day. They have a tiny corner of the bar for smokers - people are standing 4-5 deep in the smoking area. The rest of the bar (at least 3/4 of the space) is for non-smokers. There are maybe 2-3 people total in the non-smoking area. Just saying....

Other than the casino, I don't understand how all of you are coming into contact with smoke. There's usually an area one deck up from the pool set aside for smokers - no reason for non-smokers to be in the area. Again, the area is almost always full with smokers waiting to find an empty seat.

I’d book a non smoking cruise in a heartbeat. I get migraines around cigarette smoke. I walk way out of the way to avoid the casino and other smoking areas, but I wafts and it’s hard to avoid sometimes.

I'd book it too. Fortunately I do not get the migraines, just a sinus headache. But... I do like my casino time and like Carnival so until then I just take my allergy pills and gamble that the one sitting on either side of me is one of the 86% that do not smoke.

Us. My husband and I like to play Black Jack but we definitely don't spend as much time in the casino as we'd like because of the smoke. Sometimes the casino is so bad, we don't play at all.

I don't think we need non-smoking ships, just non-smoking casinos.

Absolutely! As an ex-smoker, I'll be damned to infringe on smokers rights when they are curbed so badly already. There's almost NO reason to encounter smoke on a ship. Simply stay away from the smoking areas! I will concede that the casino is open game for all (smokers and non), but that is basically the only "iffy" area.

Now if we can get our kid-free areas, alcohol free areas, perfume free areas, Lido buffet slob free area, etc.!!! :D

  • 1 month later...

i have wished this too. even having to walk through the casino (when it was closed to go on an tendered excursion), my asthma was horrible.

if they wouldnt, i wish that maybe with all their ships, they could have a couple at a time be non-smoking  for a few cruises. they could rotate it. then people who have to smoke would know to avoid it and those who detest smoking would be more likely to chose those. i would have no problem if they did the same thing the opposite way and made the whole ship smoking. as long as i knew in advance then  i just wouldn't book it.

and yes there is an out door area to smoke, but with the casino being the only indoor area it gets bad. and depending on layout and filtration, you can smell the smoke (which yes can irritate people with asthma or other lung problems) several decks away or 1/2way down the ship.
