Wine-O Posted December 13, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 13, 2017 Besides the ATM and transaction/conversion fees my U.S. bank charges me, what fees do Australian/New Zealand banks charge to make an ATM withdrawal? For example, European banks do not charge an ATM fee to make a withdrawal transaction. It's just my U.S. bank that charges any ATM/conversion fees. Would this be the same in AUS/NZ bank ATM's? dszrew Posted December 14, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 14, 2017 I don't recall, but any fees charged by ATMs in both are relatively small. And even with a dollar or two extra fees (if any), it's still the cheapest way to get cash.
GUT2407 Posted December 17, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Many banks are dropping fees for other banks but the best advice I’d have is ask your bank if they have arrangements with any particular bank here.
Cruise Junky Posted December 17, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 17, 2017 See if your US bank has any Australian partners. Ours partners with Westpac and we had no fees.
The_Big_M Posted December 17, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Some do, some don't. But if they do, it's likely to be <$2.50 so not much in the scheme of things.
Globaliser Posted December 29, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 29, 2017 I can't remember being charged a fee by any major bank ATM in either Australia or New Zealand. I do get charged by my own bank, but that's a different matter. Because my own bank is Barclays, one of the fees is waived if I withdraw from a Westpac machine, just like Cruise Junky says. cruise kitty Posted December 30, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 30, 2017 The ATM's that we used did not charge any additional fees, that said, there was little need for cash in Australia or New Zealand, other than paying for private tours, almost everything is set up for paying by card. Enjoy your trip, this was by far our most amazing cruise :) PS: our bank reimburses us for any ATM fees at home or abroad, you might want to look into that. Wine-O Posted January 1, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted January 1, 2018 Thanks for all your replies. We will be using our credit card whenever possible.
Rare Keith1010 Posted February 25, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 25, 2018 We just used the ATM machine in Australia. Exchange rate was perfect. Paid a very small fee to our local bank. Keith
DaKa2002 Posted February 25, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 25, 2018 We returned just last week from the lands 'Down Under.' In Australia there was an ATM fee but that was reimbursed by our bank. There was little use for local currencies as nearly everything could be charged on a credit or debit card, even the local tour company accepted credit cards, and tipping was not required or expected! We just loved our visits to Australia and New Zealand; hope to return again for longer visit.
Rare Keith1010 Posted February 25, 2018 #11 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Maybe the fee varied by machine. We had no fee other then our own card company and very small. Keith
Wine-O Posted March 6, 2018 Author #12 Share Posted March 6, 2018 Most ATM's we used in Australia charged AUD$3 whether you withdrew $50 or $300, so get the maximum amount per transaction. Your U.S. bank fees, if any, will also apply. A few restaurants/merchants charged 1% to use credit card vice paying in cash. So, a lunch of $60 AUD cost me an additional $.60 cents. I found that just about everyone takes your credit card, even for just a couple of drinks, so I would recommend not getting a lot of cash.
dkata Posted March 27, 2018 #13 Share Posted March 27, 2018 Just back from oz. the atm fee was $3.00 at ANZ machines. We have a capitol one 360 card which doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees. when we used allpoint branded ATMs, there was no access fee.
Rare Keith1010 Posted March 27, 2018 #14 Share Posted March 27, 2018 Yes I went back and looked and we were also charged a $3.00 fee. Keith
