Rare Copper10-8 Posted January 22, 2010 #26 Share Posted January 22, 2010 :( "My" Pretty Maasdam looks so bleak. I so much rather the sun shining on her. Hope she and all in her stay safe. What is that platform aside her? Bunkering? Yep, the bunker barge
sassyredhat Posted January 22, 2010 #27 Share Posted January 22, 2010 Those are good pictures John. Never get tired of driving by and seeing ships in port. :) It is cold, windy, and rainy here. Last night, we had such strong winds that our entire back fence fell over. Mike had to brace it up coz we have a pool. The neighbors have small children, and a dog that bites. This is sooo not normal for us. Weatherman says more coming from the south. That is Mexico. I hope the cruises are not entirely ruined. We were rocking and rolling on Zaandam on our last Hawaii run too. Pat
Rare Copper10-8 Posted January 22, 2010 #28 Share Posted January 22, 2010 First day and a half to two days out of San Diego going westbound are usually "extra motion" anyway, but with these storm fronts brewing in the Pacific, Zaandam could be looking something like this which, at a minimum, will be an uncmfortable ride:

Spendogirl Posted January 23, 2010 #34 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Yikes...that brings back memories of last February's pacific crossing to Hawaii... Easiest way to get through it..lie on your stomach and ride the waves :D Oh.. and don't forget to take down the wine glasses.. they make an aweful noise when klunking around the shelf..:p
2Labs2Many Posted January 23, 2010 #35 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Oh good heavens. Don't anyone tell my husband. We're scheduled for this cruise on February 15 and he's convinced that he's going to get sick. He once got sick on a Windjammer Barefoot Cruise. Before we left the dock. Last summer upon leaving La Coruna, Spain - 50 ft. seas and 60 mph gale force nine winds. Two passengers had to be taken to a hospital in Spain with broken bones. Rare boards Posted January 23, 2010 #40 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Has anyone heard anything about how the updates of the ship turned out? Hope they don't compare to the problems on the Rotterdam!!
RuthC Posted January 23, 2010 #41 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Has anyone heard anything about how the updates of the ship turned out? Hope they don't compare to the problems on the Rotterdam!! The Zaandam didn't have the extensive renovations that the Rotterdam had. The Zaandam had only the usual tune-up.

Boatdrill Posted January 23, 2010 #43 Share Posted January 23, 2010 I wonder if we will hear how many missed the ship? . Approx. 20 pax were no shows for the Zaandam, even though it delayed sailing until 7pm. That number represents the number of pax that did not contact HAL about their delayed travel. Otherwise many chose to meet the ship in Hilo when they realized they would not make it to San Diego in time. A few people who were stuck at Phoenix airport joined together and drove to San Diego. They arrived in time. Others whose flights had been diverted to Los Angeles, rented cars/limos or took the train, and also arrived in time for sailing. It certainly illustrates how many people really do wait until the day of sailing to fly in to port !

(Keeping fingers crossed - please say no; please say no .. :D ;) ) No, because she was never included in that "grandiose" plan; it was the four "S" class ships; Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam & Veendam plus one "R" class ship, Rotterdam. Doesn't mean it can't happen in the future, though:cool:
RuthC Posted January 24, 2010 #49 Share Posted January 24, 2010 So does this mean no Retreat pool  for Zaandam? (Keeping fingers crossed - please say no; please say no .. :D ;) ) Yes, it means no Retreat pool for the Zaandam (or the Volendam or Amsterdam). They already have their pool on Lido Deck, so there is no reason to take it out.
