Magic has more rooms, less space than Dream. Wake up Carnival BEARDS!

Numbers aside, isn't it more important how you actually FEEL when you are on the ship?

-- which in my case is in direct proportion to how "well" the Casino is treating me. Thus for me, numbers NOT aside!! :D

I just looked at the passenger space ratio on the Oasis expecting it to be quite a big roomier than either the Conquest Class or the Dream Class...

Oasis.jpg

Turns out to be the same as the Fantasy Class...

That is incorrect. A ships ratio is figured by total tonnage divided by the number of first and second guests.

220,000 tons divided by 5400 = 40.74 Nice try though.;)

All ships, all lines are crowded at peak times. Want to be first in the MDR for dinner? You won't be, 200 people are already jammed in the small area at the doors. Dinner a 8? Show up at 8:03 and proceed right to your table. First in line at the lunch buffet? More likely 351st. Go later or use the MDR, it will not be crowded. Want to be first to debark? So do 80% of your fellow cruisers. Sit back, relax.

Want a good lounger by the pool? I can't address this one. I'm a Floridian, we view blazing sunlight with the same joy as Count Dracula.

We have coffee and rolls from RS and have a late breakfast, buffet or MDR. This allows for a late lunch[crowds gone] and of course late seating for the MDR, or the buffet, or alternate dining. No crowds, no stress. Straightening out the 10's of thousands on these boards is all the stress I need!!:D:D:rolleyes:

Not being a gambler, I wouldn't have thought of that, but I see your point :p

The Dream has 1823 passenger cabins for a 2 per occupancy of 3646... The Magic has 1845 passenger cabins for a 2 per occupancy of 3690.

It's interesting to see the differences in cabin types/numbers...

Dream:

Accommodations:

12 oceanview balcony penthouse suites

44 oceanview balcony suites

831 oceanview balcony staterooms

250 oceanview staterooms

657 interior staterooms

8 oceanview upper/lower staterooms

21 interior upper/lower staterooms

1823 total guest staterooms

Magic:

Accommodations:

10 oceanview balcony Grand Suites

44 oceanview balcony Junior Suites, Ocean Suites and Spa Suites

851 oceanview balcony staterooms

221 oceanview staterooms

690 interior staterooms

29 oceanview and interior upper/lower staterooms

1845 total guest staterooms

They're still claiming a passenger space ratio of 36:1 which is just a bit less than the Conquest class (37:1) and a bit more than the Fantasy class (34:1).

I agree that the bump in passenger numbers doesn't help but I'm wondering if the delta would even be noticeable. 44 isn't a bunch when you're looking at over 3600 folks...

Here's hoping the trend ends here and that the third ship in the class won't take it further still...

:)

Host Mach:

The problem is they are creating more rooms which will generate the 1st and 2nd guest rate. In addition, you will have an increased number of 3rd and 4th guest which will drive the total passenger increase up even more.

I have no problem with better space utilization in order to be fiscally prudent, but there will come a limit to where the crowding will keep some of the more fiscally solvent cruisers away. ;)

I did not feel any more crowded on the Dream than I have any other Carnival ship EXCEPT for the bottleneck at the coffee bar on Promenade.

So I learned to take Lower Dream Street (deck 4)...and it was a ghost town most of the time...

Personally, I think they made a mistake with the Ocean Plaza / Lanai design in that they have to much space outdoors that is not utilized.

Still had a great cruise....we did not experience any lines (out of the ordinary) on Lido except for the Mongolian Wok and that was soooo worth the wait!!! YUM!!

It was very good! ... though if you had told me when I got in that line with ~10-15 people in front of me that we would be there over HALF AN HOUR, I would have skipped it!

The funny part is that you are wrong on the lower price.;)

The Dream is much more expensive than all the other ships in the fleet for the same cruise destinations and I would imagine the Magic will be even higher.

But do we really know the the Dream class will be any more expensive than the other classes in the long run? Perhaps the higher prices we are seeing now for the Dream are just a function of it being the newest thing Carnival has going, and when the novelty wears off the cost on the Dream class will be in line with Carnival's other ships.

On the other hand, it could well be that Dream's operating costs are higher for some reason and will always require higher pricing. Time will tell I guess.

We have only sailed on the Dream once. We did think the lines at the buffet are at times longer than any other class Carnival ship. There are at times a sewer odor on the Empress deck in front of the GS cabins and near the ladder to the water slide. I am not sure what they will be cutting out of the gym. I hope it will not be the treadmills as they always were packed during our cruise everyday when i was there.

It was so bad we have booked a few cabins for our family on the Magic to Europe next year. :D Until we sail on the Magic I will withhold judgement.

We have decided not to sail on the Dream again. That is not intended to be a knock On Carnival just a matter of personal choice for us. We have other Carnival bookings scheduled and I am sure there will be plenty more to come. We also will continue to enjoy the finer perks that other lines have to offer that Carnival does not.

The Dream is a beautiful ship and we had a wonderful cruise.

I think it's the former. I've noticed in the past a slight premium on the newest ship -- perhaps because it books more quickly (supply and demand).

Even though it's bigger, I remember reading something from CCL when they were building Dream about her increased aerodynamic properties and other special design factors like a new type of paint (you'll have to excuse me, I'm not an engineer) which creates less drag through the water and thus conserves fuel. Saves $$$, so you know Cahill and the gang are on top of that stuff.

This is the philosophy I am going to have to adopt. I read bad reviews, good reviews then someone blasts a ship that's not even built yet..... It's gets my hopes up, lowers them, then leaves me questioning my cruise on the Magic next year. And it gives me a headache.... I gotta stop reading reviews, that's all there is to it! ;)

Paul,

I agree with your assessment of the spa deck, more cabins, but look at what the Sun deck on the Magic does. In effect, they're making the gym and regular saunas more public access and putting all the spa stuff up on the Sun deck and doing away with the aerobics area up there and putting in on the spa deck.

These are still more concept plans than actual but for spa cruisers it might actually be a bit better.

If when I go on the Dream it feels over crowded to me, I will pay more next time to go on a ship with less people and that's managed properly. I don't want to sail on the Fantasy class ships just because they're less crowded.

I like the newer bigger ships and as long as they don't feel more crowded I will sail them but if I have to wait in longer lines and wait longer for food or drinks, I will sail another cruiseline to avoid that.

I would also sail a newer smaller ship more likely if she's not over crowded but getting tired of the smaller older ships.

  • 1 year later...

I guess I am in the minority. I am glad they are reducing the gym size. I can't for the life of me, understand why anyone wants to work out on a cruise. Pool area, sun decks, sure, but sweating and working out........a mystery. And yes, I work out at home. I think they could have increased areas that are too small like the Wok grill everyone mentioned. Maybe if that were larger and a few more staff, people wouldn't be waiting so long. Or perhaps they should use that space to add a couple of adult only hot tubs!

We both like the larger ships. There is so much more to do and doesn't feel as crowded as the smaller ships.

I think they did a great job and we are excited about our Magic cruise next year!

Yes,

It's all about personal perseption and how many pax rush to to a location at peak times...We're sailing the Dream for our 2nd go around in a month.

-Peak times in the gym=crammed

-Peak times in the Comedy club=good luck finding a seat unless you camped out over night:rolleyes:

-Peak times in the Gathering = big lines

...Yes it's about total number of people attempting to do the same activity in an area that is similar sized to smaller ships.

-We loved it tho...thus cruise #2 same ship...

We did enjoy always finding a chaise lounge , if you don't mind a different level than centered around lido pool.

That's how I feel anyway;)

I just looked at the passenger space ratio on the Oasis expecting it to be quite a big roomier than either the Conquest Class or the Dream Class...

Oasis.jpg

Turns out to be the same as the Fantasy Class...

I'm not sure where you got that space ratio, but it's completely wrong. The space ratio is the gross tonnage divided by the double occupancy capacity.

Royal Caribbean Oasis Class:

225,282 gt / 5412 pax = 41.6 space ratio

Carnival Fantasy Class:

70,367 gt / 2056 pax = 34.4 space ratio

CARNIVAL MAGIC:

130,000 gt / 3690 pax = 35.2 space ratio

Carnival Spirit Class:

88,500 gt / 2124 pax = 41.7 space ratio

As you can see, OASIS and ALLURE have a great space ratio, in line with Carnival's Spirit Class (which are the most spacious ships in Carnival's fleet).

Having sailed on both ALLURE and OASIS I can attest they rarely feel crowded. I wish I could say the same for CARNIVAL CONQUEST which was probably the most crowded ship I've ever sailed. I've never waited in so many lines. My vacation began to feel like a chore.

As far as Carnival goes, the Spirit Class is the best thing they have going.

did a couple trips on the dream and never felt crowded at all, also never smelled anything

my favorite class before the dream was the "conquest class" now its the dream class.

the only time i did feel the crowds was on a 4 day booze cruise on the inspiration.. although that was the cheapest rate i have ever paid for a cruise..
