Oasis Heading Back to Nassau, Missing St. Thomas

This is a post on FB from a friend currently on Oasis. Yesterday she emailed me that they were circling and she thought someone might be in the water but she said they only did it for a short time and then headed for St. Thomas. I hope all is well with the crew member. I'm curious why they would go back if not for a medical emergency though.

 

"Quick post. Story that capt has relayed, a crew member who returned to ship in Nassau did not show up for work this morning. Coast guard is doing a search as did the whole crew on board. A male crew member is all we know . Coast guard has ordered the ship back to Nassau which we r headed full speed ahead. We will not be going to st Thomas. More to follow. J&L"

Currently on board Oasis. Yesterday at 5:00 Captain Thorolvsen announced that a crew member did not show for work. After a thorough search of the ship, it was decided to turn the ship around and retraace our path. Tthe ship traveled back for eight hours towards Nassau. At 1:00 this morning the ship turned back around due to fuel concerns and we are now heading for St. Maarten. We are skipping St. Thomas today. The Captain just announced that video did indeed show the crew member going overboard and that the U.S and Bahamian Coast Guard is still searching. RCI is offering all guests the followin compensation. 1st and 2nd guests in each cabin receive a $400.00 Future Cruise Credit and each third and fourth person will recive a $100.00 credit. We are also staying in St. MAA

How tragic for the crew and the crew member's family. Thoughts and prayers are with all of them.

 

That seems to be pretty fair compensation for missing a port, however, how does RCI handle excursions that were paid for prior to sailing? Are those just lost expenses? Or does the future cruise credit designed to cover those?

Or you could be a normal, compassionate human being, understand the tragic, unique situation, and be grateful for an extra day at sea on a ship with so much to do...

Yes, I'm sure that will be helpful. After our Freedom cruise, where we only had three port days (actually more like 2.5), I found that I like that pace. Missing the port, with the compensation they have given, really wouldn't bother me that much.

I would think they will refund the excursion fees. Now for those who booked outside excursions, that would depend on those particular vendors policies I would imagine.

You can't really be serious about that. :rolleyes: A tragic event occurred and RCI seems to be handling it as well as they can. I fear to hear how you think that they should have dealt with such an event and can only be glad that it was not your decision to make.:rolleyes:

I would be upset and concerned that another human being is appearently dead. I would be more concerned about that then future cruise credits. People matter more then future cruise credits or missing a stop on a cruise ship.

 

I work hard to go on vacation but at the same time. People matter more then a cruise.

WOW! That seems to be a very generous compensation for missing ports. I have to imagine the cost an incident like this must cause RCCL not to mention the stress on all the employees having to deal with this must be immeasurable. I feel for the family of the crew member and all their friends and coworkers. Granted, I would be majorly disappointed if I was cruising and missed my ports, but given the circumstances, it it is very understandable. I commend the captain for communicating to the passengers what was happening.

I think RCCL did a great job by going back and looking for the crew member. I also would be happy with the compensation offered. However, I would never sail on the Oasis, so I would have LOTS of ports to look forward to if one was missed.

 

What is your definition of lots? Most week long cruises have no more than 4 ports of call. Missing one would leave three. I guess I answered my own question. Three is lots. Two is not.

That Oasis Cruise only had 3 ports to begin with, Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

 

I believe Royal Caribbean is happy with just the 3 ports because they can make more money when people are on the ship rather then when they are off the ship in ports.

This is really sad. I was on that ship last week. They all work really hard and have a tough life. I can't even imagine how anyone on that ship is feeling right now.

 

As for excursions booked through private vendors, I would imagine you'd be able to get your money back since the ship was unable to make it to port. Many of them allow for a refund in those situations, and probably would be understanding in this type of situation. More so than some posters, I would guess.

 

And as Jimbo says, RC will make a lot of money with another day at sea. Hot, upset people will drink more and spend more in the casino, most likely. It's cynical, but true.

I think it's very sad that yet another crew member chose to end their life. Yeah, missing St. Thomas stinks but heck, being on the Oasis is better than some other ships. I would imagine the sea days on that behemoth are not boring at all. I like port days 'cause I get bored on the ship after a while, but I've never sailed on the Oasis. I think $400 is more than generous.

 

I sure hope cruise lines wake up and do more to help their crew members deal with the long time at sea, and being away from family and friends. I've never worked on a ship but I have worked over in the "desert" and living on a military base for five months away from my friends and family, when I was going through a painful break-up back home was awful, and I had nobody to turn to either. :(

Who needs ports when you are on the Oasis. I mean once you been to St. Thomas you dont need to go back on every cruise. I think it is much more relaxing sitting in a deck chair, regular chair, bar stool and just chillin, instead of slogging around a hot island with 5,000 other people. I cant imagine the amount of people in St.Thomas when the Oasis and 4 other cruise ships are there. For me the ship is the destination.

I was on the Explorer last month when a crew member went overboard.

Now it has happened again. lo and behold the same type ignorant comments pop up again. Yes it did cause us lost hours and a late return to Bayonne. but there was a loss of a life and that is the sad part. I get to have today, tomorrow and so on. I'll get over it but that person is dead. I just hope I never have to cruise with people that write idiotc comments such I have read here. Try saying a prayer for the person rather than bash what RCCL is doing.
