Overall, the new menu is a slight cutback from the old. The shrimp cocktail is gone, but the appetizers overall seem about the same. They've downgraded the main entrees a bit with the comfort food item replacing a higher end item (ribs or beef short ribs).

we have only cruised on CCL and we thought the food was great. Not one complaint about any of it. This will only be our second cruise, so i will be able to see if it is better, same or worse than the last one.:)

 

The best piece of advice I could give you is to try different lines. We've done RCI, Carnival and Princess and will be doing our first NCL cruise in February. If you stick to one line you'll never know what's on another lne. For instance we've had delicious Alaskan King Crab on Princess, the best steak I ever had on the Navigator of the Seas and of course warm chocolate melting cake on Carnival.

 

Cruising different lines gives you an appreciation of which line does some things better. For instance Princess dining room food was a 9.5 out of 10 for me. Fantastic. Carnival MDR food is about a 6 out of 10. Just passable. RCI does a great buffet and their dining room food is about an 8.5 out of 10. The RCI ships are the nicest looking ships on the seas IMHO whereas Carnival ships are gaudy and cold.

 

So there's lots to do and see out there and if you're going to cruise, try them all.

When did the menu change? That pictured above was not anything like the menu in the fantasy 2 wks ago. We had the same menus I have seen since they combined the starters, soups and salads.

Im sure the food has gone down hill on most of the middle of the road cruiselines....my sister gets offered comp cruise's on NCL and RCL all the time because she is a high roller in the casinos which leads me to believe they can't fill the ships with people booking only! I bet the pay restaurants keep up the quality of the food.

I have reviews of pax that have come back and say the food has gone downhill in the last couple of years.

 

I was also reading on the NCL board how most prefer the food on NCL to CCL.

 

I havent been on NCL for a long time because the food was very bad and have always been afraid to repeat that and I have always been happy with CCL's food but it's been almost a year since we were on CCL.

 

I also understand that some on each board are cheerleaders and they could be fed dog food and say it's good rather than disparage their favorite line.

 

Just wondering your thoughts and again this is the CCL board so I'll take that into consideration also.;)

We have cruised CCL, Celebrity and Princess. I have stated before that the biggest difference that I have noticed between them is that on CCL you can easily see that the staff seems to be busier with more tasks to do.

 

But I really enjoy the night life more on CCL, not the disco or big shows, but the musicians and karaoke. I just don't have the same fun on the other lines.

 

The food on Celebrity was better, BUT, not that much.

actually, rccl has remained consistant. theefore, with carnival's downgrade, the food on rccl is now better. ncl is still better than carnival, although there are fees involved in some instances.

To each his own. If you have to pay to eat in the specialty restaurants, then what does that say about the dining room's food????? Your cruise is what you make of it. Sure the food isnt always "the greatest", but you get that no matter WHICH cruise line you go on. I cruise Carnival with the exception of 1 RCL cruise. 13 cabins of people and many unresolved problems. I will NEVER cruise with them again. But that is my choice. I have found CCL to have better prices and bigger cabins. I chose CCL, but again, my preference. For all the CCL bashers who claim their loyalty to RCL, then get off CCL site and go to your beloved RCL site. Bon voyage....

However, they mention how much they will spend a week, for 2 people to eat at the specialty restaurants on RCL. Thats why I question how good RCL's MDR food is. We sail primarily Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Royal started downgrading their food far before Carnival did and we have said that Carnival's food was far better. Now, though, Carnival has cheapened it's food so I am not sure which line is better.

 

We were on Miracle in October of last year and had rack of lamb for dinner one night. On Dream in April, the lamb was one lamb chop with the rest being leg of lamb. Carnival used to have filet mignon, now it is filet, but it's shoulder meat. What happened to the strip steaks that are now flat iron steak?

 

My DH is one who loves comfort food and he has a problem eating "tougher" meat, so seeing one of his favorites ribs on the menu was right up his alley. Now, with fried chicken on the menu and perhaps meatloaf, he will be in heaven!!! I, on the other hand, will think it's all cheap food as we had on NCL when we went to Alaska a few years ago.

 

I thought the food in the mdr on NCL was probably the cheapest, most gross food I have ever eaten. I cook along the lines of Halos and I never saw so many hamburger type foods as I did on NCL.

 

That was our first Alaska cruise and also our service in the dining room was horrendous. When we went a second time, we decided to spend the money to eat in the specialty restaurants all week and that's what we did. We totally enjoyed that, had better food, a much more quiet and relaxing atmosphere and one we would do again if we ever sailed NCL. To us, the cost of the other restaurants was part of the cruise.

 

We will be on Royal Caribbean in a couple of months, so we will hopefully see an improvement in the MDR food. Then a few months later, we will be back on Dream. I know even if I am not happy with the new menu, we will hit the steak house a time or two and DH will be happy with his ribs and fried chicken for dinner.

When I first strayed form CCL, the competition (Celebrity, RCI and NCL) couldn't hold a candle to CCL in the MDR.

Your post is exactly what the problem is around here. You cruise one ship of another line, a ship that doesn't even exist in their fleet anymore, and you profess their entire fleet is so much worse than your beloved line of choice. Did it ever occur to you that some of us bash CCL because we are disappointed with the direction they are going?

 

As for the specialty restaurant idea, it's not about avoiding MDR food. Reasons for eating in specialty restaurants include ambiance, less people, no or few kids, more personal service, and slower pace. And yes, the food uauslly is that much better than the mass produced food of the MDR.

My 1 bad experience on RCl was enough to make me not want to cruise their line again. As I said, we had 13 cabins of friends and family, and numerous ones had issues from no a/c the entire trip to not able to use their toilets for days, to other issues. Some issues never were resolved. THAT was enough to make me not cruise with them again. I dont care how big their boats are or that the boat we went on is no longer part of their fleet. To each his own, and I choose to stick with CCL.

Look plain and simple everything in our lives seems to be going up in price. McDonalds isn't 12 cents for a burger anymore guys! It's like saying I can affaord a Chevy but want a Cadilac or BMW, we all do but it ain't happening!LOL So we CCL fans will probably be CCL fans for life! Myself all the pricing I have received for RCL is about $100.00 pp more than CCL and $220.00 a couple isn't worth it for the difference in Food, and I sure ly wouldn't go to the pay restuarants! I won't do that on CCL! I want to cruise as many times as possible in my life so cruise pricing is the key as long as you enjoy the cruise lines and the given ship or ships!

I am guessing that those same price conscious cruisers will not opt for things like the Steakhouse or Red Frog Pub as often as they might on other lines.

 

I made our specialty reservations for the Eclipse recently - with a couple of them at $35pp. Shortly thereafter Celebrity announced that some of those were going to increase to $40 pp. That is starting to become a significant number. Fortunately, since you pay at the time reservations are made (online) I am locked in at the "lower" rates. I suppose they will increase the fees until they see resistance (lower bookings).

You are CCL's target market and there are millions of you, which is why the direction this line is headed is the way it will continue. There are too many peoeple who don't mind cruising this way.

CCL had (for the most part) escaped the reputation of being Wal_mart/Party ship....the line was SO awesome. Previous management worked very hard to make that line fabulous.

Now, it's headed right back down that ugly toilet. :(

Yea, because mechanical problems never occur on CCL ships, right? Hmmmm. I seem to remember a recent case of an entire ship losing power, their toilets, A/C, etc. Whatever. To each their own. Enjoy your one cruise line experience.

I have to agree with Cruzaholic41...if you think this doesn't happen on CCL and every other cruise line, you are sadly mistaken.

To the degree at which these things are addressed will vary from ship to ship/week to week. So, someone with a toilet or AC issue on a CCL ship may get no resolution one week and the passenger in that cabin the following week may get some OBC if they don't fix the problem.

The inconsistency of how these problems are addressed is always the issue.And you will definitely find problems AND inconsistencies on CCL.

Interesting analogy with the cars. A lot of people who can afford the Cadillacs, and BMWs, have been cruising on Carnival because of the value, but now that the value is going down to used car levels those people are the ones complaining and moving on. Maybe carnival prefers that, so that hopefully them move to one of the more upscale lines in the CCL family.
