Princess Wine List 2011/2012

The idea is to confuse the waiter, a rather tricky scenario. Don't bring wines on the list. Show a little class.

 Ohhh, I see. No, I would never do that. I believe that if the waiter chooses not to charge me then I am lucky and at the end of the cruise so is he or she. We always pass a large portion of the savings onto our wait staff from the the dining room in a form of "additional tips".

I see it as a win/win scenario. ;)

Hi Larry

Thanks for posting the updated list, our boards sommelier:D

Thanks to your kund postings, this summer we enjoyed the Silverado, Kendall Jack London cab and Murieta meritage. Interesting to see the new '' The Spur'' meritage. We also like the Santa Margerita Pino Grigio. Has anybody tried the malbec, a very popular grape variety here in the UK ?

Cheers, buddy !!

I just thought I would throw into the mix that anyone would be pleasantly surprised by the Round Hill Merlot! Try it!

(We own a wine store and ordered it for our store after going to a distributor tasting, it does very well)

Which one is the best Merlot? Thanks

For some people, there's no such thing as "good" (let alone "best") Merlot.

We like a good Zin and miss the Coppola Zin which was on the wine list for a few years. We end up meandering through the wine list on our cruises, mostly sticking with the reds, but having a few whites along the way.

Thanks for posting the list.

Wow! I can get Chateau Se. Michelle at state-owned liquor stores (not known for great prices) for $11.99.

And Rex Goliath goes for $5.99!! And they're charging $26 for that awful wine? And anyone charging $25 for white zin should be shot. :D

Thank you for the list!! I'm sure some wines aren't marked up badly, but others...wow.....

The trend many notice is that lower prices wines are marked up precentage wise much more than middle and higher end. The cruise lines provide those wines for those who enjoy them and still would like to charge at least a minimum per bottle for their effort. We see it many places. Some people only like sweeter (lower price) wines so those are provided even though they do take a slot in the wine cellars. Different strokes for different folks.:)

Thanks Largin!

I have a wine list from May 2010 and, while I thought prices had gone up, it seems I just have a bad memory. The Murietta's Well (which I like) hasn't gone up at all.

If someone wants I can copy and post the old list but it's not as neat as Largin's list so I'll wait until someone asks.

I was able to find a wine chain that has stores in Florida, including Ft. Lauderdale, that has its prices posted online. They have Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay for $10.47 per bottle which is about as low a price as you will find. Princess has it as $32. So figuring the tip, you do save quite a bit to bring your own. I'm not going to post a link, but it's there to be found with a Google search.

I was able to check online for Conundrum for $17.97 per bottle, which is really cheap. It isn't on the Princess list, with is surprising since it is a great pre-dinner wine and also a great food wine. I also love Las Rocas, which is really cheap and really good. When Robert Parker gives an $11 bottle of red wine an 89 or 90 rating (which Las Rocas has), that's as close as I'm going to get to fine wine.

Thanks to the OP for posting the original list. We can bring a few bottles on and perhaps buy a few from Princess, depending on the cost.

On our 16 day b2b2b on the Coral ending yesterday we enjoyed Murrieta's Well "The Spur", Shug & Ferrari-Carano Merlots, Frogs Leap Zin, Silverado & Kenwood Jack London Cabs and the Bolla Amarone. Our favorite was "The Spur" Meritage. We had 5 bottles of that wine.. :D

The Spur was our favorite too! We really like the Meritage wines and have tried quite a few in search of the best!:)

We also enjoyed a bottle that we picked up in Florida at Total Wines. It was a Washington wine from Adam's Bench. I believe it was "The Reckoning".

Some of the mark-ups are quite high, the 'Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet.. $34' is currently advertised at 'Dan Murphy's' here in Oz for $6.99 a bottle !, but as you indicated others are quite reasonable the 'Veuve Clicquot Brut.. $74' is also at 'Dan Murphy's' for $64.99 ... might have a few bottles of the Veuve Clicquot at that price :D

Thanx again for posting that list, pretty helpful. Two wines not mentioned in the thread that are just terrific...The Seghesio "Blue Cap" (Sonoma County) Zin. We've been drinking this for 15 years or so and just bought more two cases. Also, a great wine and a great deal is the large format (1.5L) Le Volta.

We tasted this, appropriately, in Maranello, Italy (near the Ferrari factory). Had it again Saturday nite...once again, delic!

The prices are fair, but don't forget the 15% gratuity added to the bill. Unlike the corkage fee, they always charge this one!

Le Chaim. steve

Don't forget to let it breath! It's a totally different wine once it gets to breath...we usually decant ours. They will do that on the ship for you too.
