Table for Two....immediately please.

Out to dinner with friends (all women)...the conversation turned to vacations and then to cruising. One of the gals told us about something that happened to her brother and his wife on a cruise.

Went to the dining room first evening and were seated at a table for eight. There were three other couples ,who they think all knew one another(didn't stay long enough to find out for sure ).....because one of the women began coming on so strong to my friend's brother (a real sweetheart , just a big ole Teddy Bear of a guy )

Her sister in law was horrified....this was way ,way over the top fawning and suggestive comments.( introductions hadn't even been made when the woman began this behavior) At first they thought it was her silly attempt at humor...but when it became apparent that it was not... her brother stood up without saying a word..took his wife's hand and left the table. Found the dining room manager and said "we will wait while you find us a table for two" ( we voted him our hero):):)

Of course then began a fun conversation of different solutions to this awkward situation..they ranged from a glass of water in her lap to an audition for Jerry Springer (just kidding). Personally I think her brother handled it perfectly. It would seem there can be perils to group dining.;)

WOW. More then 2 1/2 years cruising and we never heard anything quite like this case. We also think it was handled perfectly although as an older guy...if the women was "hot" I would have enjoyed the experience and DW would have had a good laugh :)

Well, I haven't hit this yet thank heavens:D:D I think I would have been a less tolerant person in this situation:rolleyes: I've been very lucky with my group dinings and only met interesting people (most times - there was one bad apple in the barrel in all of my cruises - but not like this).

Incredible story - thanks for sharing and lightening up the evening:)

That's a cute story, Colleen. I'm sure you gals had a lot of laughs coming up with your own ways of dealing with this. :D

I'd love to offer some of my own creative ;) suggestions for handling this situation but I need to know more about this fluzzie first.

Was she slurring-her-words-inebriated or stone-cold sober?

Was she dressed over-the-top provocatively or in sweat pants and ball cap?

Was she drop dead gorgeous or butt ugly?

Was she over 80 or under 30?

So many things need to be taken into consideration in order to properly  deal with her.

i think he handled it perfectly. i've only had to change tables once (actually six non-related solos from a 8-op changed to our own).

i had something similar, happen once. while standing in line to meet the captain at the formal night reception, a very elderly lady came up and took my arm. i was decked out in my tux and she was in a very elegant ball gown and dripping in jewels. i just escorted her through the line and then got out of there. it was kind of cute, actually. i'm sure i looked like her boy-toy.

Too funny, you could have been there.:D

...all four questions were quickly asked by the group. Our friend answered as best she could..info came from her sister in law.

1) Was NOT slurring her words.... however we all thought something must have lowered her inhibitions. .. or she's a nut bar.

2) Apparently the whole table was well dressed ...in fact her sister in law was pleased as they approached the table (little did she know)

3) When our friend asked her sister in law what the woman looked like, she said " She was okay ,not ugly "....the brother and his wife .. he's a tall good looking guy ...sister in law, cute as a button ( mid thirties )

4) The whole table seemed to be thirties to early forties...so she was certainly old enough to know better and dementia was not the issue.:)

Our poor friend answered all the questions fired at her as best she could :D...but she was getting it third hand and the couple didn't stay at the table very long.

The woman's behavior was so outrageous ,that her brother just got himself and his wife out of there. Sure gave us gals "somethin' to talk about" though.:D

Now that is a great story. What can I say? It is difficult trying to be a seventy year old sex symbol! :D It might have been fun, and I think I would have found that hilarious, depending upon DW's reaction. The second one senses the slightest discomfort on her part, it is time to get out of Dodge.

The only bad experience we have had with a large table was a time when we had a couple that was trying to hustle us into buying some worthless desert land in Utah or Nevada. They used every meal as an opportunity make a sales pitch to a captive audience of vacationing couples. Other than those two, we have had wonderful experiences meeting other couples.

DH & I normally ask for large tables and are usually pleased with our dining experiences. I can think of two times when it wasn't so pleasant.

One was our first night of a Caribbean cruise - table of 8. 6 of us were seated and enjoying introductions when a tardy couple approached. She (Mary) was carrying a drink glass that was embedded with twinkle type lights and caught everyones attention. Mary's voice was very loud, high pitched nasal, and "sing -song ish". She admitted that she loves attention and that's why she carries the sparkly glass with her. She dominated the table and proudly told us that she planned to "lick a whale" on her shore excursion in Dominica. Mary told us that after she licked it, it would be hers forever - "you know, like after you lick a lollypop - it's your lollypop and no one else wants it". She then bounced up and down in her chair clapping with laughing with extreme joy. By this time, other tables were glancing our way. This was the beginning of numerous stories and attention seeking antics. It was hard to sit there for the entire meal. We asked for a table change the next day. I think it was a 11 day cruise and we just didn't think we could tolerate Mary for that long.

Our other story also involves licking. This was at an open seating lunch and we sat with unknown fellow cruisers for a meal that included corn on the cob. One lady quickly took every foil wrapped pat of butter the table had and then started screaming for the waiter to bring more butter. "Butter, butter, we need more butter" she yelled. She proceeded to put butter on everything and then would lick any remaining butter from the foil wrappers. When it came time for the corn on the cob, butter was everywhere and the butter lover managed to scream across the room for more butter. If all that wasn't bad enough, the worse part was after she ate her corn and she realized she had melted butter running down her forearms - no problem for her, she just took her tongue and licked the butter from forearms to finger tips. We decided we didn't want dessert and left.

Despite the negatives, we still like the adventure of large tables and meeting new people.

Good lord, what a couple of nut jobs! I'll bet you've had many laughs telling these stories to friends and family. I'm curious to know how Mary's male companion reacted to her over-the-top behavior. Did he play along and watch her antics grinning with pride? And, what about Butter Lover....was she solo or with others? If so, how did they react to her "table manners?"

Whale Licker (that's what we still refer to her as) was married and hubby appeared to be very enamored with her. He was quiet and let her have all the attention. She ended up well known on the ship because in the show lounges she received more attention when instead of laughing at a joke she loudly ulutated - (it's what some middle eastern women vocalize to express excitement or to celebrate - sometimes called tongue wagging). Whale licker did not appear to be of middle eastern descent but was so good at it that the comedian stopped his show and commented on her. I'm sure she loved the attention. So besides her high pitched, nasal, sing-song voice for attention she was also quite adept at ululation.

Butter Lover (Buttah, more buttah!) was with 3 others but I really don't remember much about them that day. I think they must have been used to it all.

Yes, you are right. We tell these stories and laugh. When we have family dinners everyone always asks for someone to pass them the "Buttah". As I was typing my first post, I was struck by the fact that both of my stories involve licking. Weird huh but we do love cruising!!

My Dad and I always requested a table for two. On some cruise ships, the 2 tops are very close to the adjacent tables. On one cruise, a man was travelling with his wife and teen-age daughter. This man enjoyed talking with my Dad. He would sit near us each morning at breakfast and then at lunch. (Dinner was served with assigned seating.) He is the only person that I know who chewed with his mouth open and carried on a conversation at the same time. We tried changing tables, dining rooms, eating times, etc. but he always found us. He was so enamored of my Dad that he gave us his business card and told us to contact him anytime we were in his STATE (not just his city).

One of the reasons we prefer a table for two.....bad table manners/obnoxious behavior absolute deal breaker for my husband (I am not too big on them either):) We enjoy the "honeymoon tables" located in the far corners of the dining room.... quieter area of the room and an added bonus ...everyone at the table chews with their mouth closed.;)
