On Grandeur now..

Recommended Posts

Didn't this ship just get revitalized?? We are looking at going on this next summer.

They can make the alarm sound or public address speaker very loud in your stateroom. If you still don't report to muster, they will come and get you.

Hopefully some CCTV camera's were located in the vicinity or origin area ???

Most likely will have some cameras but the quality to pick up on something may be another matter, and at night...but the area should still be well-lit unless it started out of view/inside

Too bad the media is taking the day off! No real news on today- just a rehash of old news.

The only way a cig butt could come from a balcony is the aft balconies- that would be a long shot from that distance/angle. I am sure someone from the crew knows something...

It all depends on how the winds were blowing. The winds are all mixed up around the transom.

Hopefully someone in the room with you will wake you up. If you cannot hear the alarm though, then you are certainly an extremely heavy sleeper.

Part of a Muster Drill is for the Cabin Steward to physically check each cabin and then place a red tag into the keyway. An officer then validates that this has been done.

How do they wake all the passengers? What if you are a heavy sleeper would they just come in your room and get you up?

Eventually, they would try to locate those that did not show up at muster.

Presumably, anyone who is that heavy of a sleeper that would not wake up for an alarm, would have brought whatever assistive technology they need....after all, these would be extremely heavy sleepers, not complete idiots.

Very true, still a long shot but a shot nonetheless! I would suspect trolling around the Bahamas at night would have little wind but always possible. I do not know what the winds were in the Bahamas last night.

I thank everyone for their posting from on ship. I am so glad that all on ship were blessed with safety during the fire. A well trained crew really makes a difference when an emergency occurs. 14 crew and 8 passengers were injured on the CCL Ecstasy back in '98. A lot has been learned from that incident and Royal used it in training, equipping the ship and dealing with todays fire. I think there were 3 missed sailings and that fire (then) cost $17 million for repairs. It went to Newport for repairs. Inflation will add to the cost today BUT again, no injuries is the best news. Will wait for factual details of cause to make any judgments. Again, well done to the crew and to the guests on ship for remaining calm during such a highly stressful time.

True, but that would still have to be an NBA-quality shot. The roof of the South Pacific Lounge sticks out around 6-7 feet past the aft balconies. One of the passengers interviewed on CNN said that there was a storm last night after they left Port Canaveral, so maybe....

I still think it's more likely something else, like an electrical spark, a crew member on a smoke break, or some force of nature.

Yes, they will come get you if you do not report to your muster station.

Looking at the limited photos..............and we cannot really see what if any damages have extending beyond the stern decks............its not beyond the possibility that she could be given permission to sail with only the aft lounge windows covered over. The would be classes call to give permission and then RCCL would have to look at the numbers and when a yard was available to do the work.

The outer steel work shell is not deformed. The steel I can see deformed is relatively light.

A good deal would ride on how bad the interior systems, wiring, plumbing etc. were damaged.

The number of lost cruises could be minimized and give the yard the time to get at the repair items and parts together to thereby, minimize actual yard time.

Remember the Triumph is in Freeport and we don't know just how backed up the yard is! Not to mention, if I am not mistaken Carnival Inc. owns the Freeport Yard.

YES..........I know there is a lot of maybes and could bes in this statement, but I have seen and been on ships that sailed with similar damages.

Man loses money in the casino, goes back to cabin to have a smoke. Still upset, launches butt over aft side of ship. Fire starts, and accelerates after catching passengers stored/confiscated liquor cache.

At last week's muster drill on the Grandeur, they were scanning Seapass cards when you checked in at your muster station, so they are able to get a complete and accurate accounting of all passengers. The muster signal is quite loud and will be piped into each stateroom so one would have to be extremely hard of hearing to miss it. I also believe that they would have a list of any deaf passengers so that they could go to the cabin to alert them. Since the ship sailed on Friday, the muster drill instructions should have been fresh in the minds of most passengers.

Regardless of whether or not the incident on Grandeur was caused by a cigarette (it could easily have been electrical or mechanical failure) I do wish cruise lines would emphasise more to smokers the importance of being extremely careful when disposing of cigar or cigarette butts.

I am not a smoker so perhaps there is information in balcony cabins where smoking does seem to be permitted however having just returned from NCL cruise I didn't feel they placed enough emphasis on the dangers. If memory serves they passed off a reference to not throwing cigarettes overboard in a light hearted way along the lines that the fishes wouldn't like it.

I have also heard smokers moaning about how ridiculous it is to request that butts aren't thrown overboard......."after all how much damage could it cause to the sea?" Some people clearly don't understand the risks of carelessly discarded smoking materials.

Fire is one of the biggest risks on cruise ships and I do wish more emphasis is placed on advising passengers on fire safety. There is very limited information on what to do on discovering a fire unles you happen upon it on the TV or in some of the general literature which many people don't read. It should be integral to the lifeboat drill as I'm sure there are more incidents involving fires on board ships than other situations requiring instigation of lifeboat procedures.

A report from a friend who is on board Grandeur who asked me to pass on a shout-out to the crew:

From Cruise Critic member kevpc110, "Please put an outstanding word out for RCCL grandeur crew on cruise critic. From when we awoke through the entire emergency then went above and beyond for everyone. From going to get meds out of cabins, to giving water and refreshments, making the elderly calm and comfortable and escorting passengers to the restrooms. It could have been 4 hours of hell! They were all just awesome! Thank you!!"

The illness I an sure was due to standing in muster position tight like sardines with life jackets on for a good 2 hours no water and nerves. After 2 hours when the fire was finally out (we were being constantly updated by captain Espen) we began to relax a bit and stayed in muster but some people were able to find a tiny spot to sit. I just made it to ghe windjammer for a bite and guests and crew from officers to midnight deck scrubbers are eating side by side. Quite an unusual sight.

Captain Espen is the best, in my opinion. Glad to hear everyone is OK.

I'm so sorry up hear you all have gone through this. There is nothing more terrifying then being 3 am in the dark at sea with a fire. Thank God you are all safe.

I'll take a fire over listing and sinking.
