Royal Caribbean should look at the CC homepage poll

Recommended Posts

I'm just thankful that no one in my immediate family picked up the habit of smoking. It's pretty pitiful when some people can't even make it through dinner without running to get another cancer stick. My office has a policy of no smoking on the property and it's a running joke at work to see how many of them stand outside by the highway smoking in the rain, snow, sleet, you name it.

Almost half of cruisers have a problem with smoking balcony neighbors.

Wake up RCI! When I pay ten thousand dollars for a suite, I don't want smoke in my face during breakfast!

Book your next suite on Celebrity NO SMOKE.Or maybe the world should change to make you happy.I don't think so. :p

Generally speaking a fish dinner ordered through roomservice and left on the floor by the balcony divider in the hot sun will deter any or most activities:rolleyes::D

So are you saying you love the smell of fish in the hot sun? Because you and yours would have the same smell on your balcony. So go for it!

The world already is changing for the better on this issue. I don't think it's going to suddenly stop or reverse course. :)

So with you! And the other one that said loud talkers should be banned-really???? Who decides what is loud. I am naturally a louder talker, so I cannot go on my balcony b/c someone might not like it? Please!!!!!:(

Quite bizarre logic you have there. Smokers have cleaner hands than non-smokers?

Who knows??? I am just saying I am tired of the tirade about smokers. Even though we don't smoke, I have no problem with someone smoking on the balcony next to me.

On our last cruise, I was kept awake all night by the guy in the cabin next to us coughing all night. Should that be banned?? All I am saying is that things have gotten crazy. do I want to smell someone eating stinking fish on their balcony? No - so that should be banned? Again, all I am saying is people need to be more tolerant. Enjoy your cruise - that is what we are there for, what someone does on their balcony is not going to impack my cruise - no matter what they are doing - smoking, eating, or making woopee!!!

I think they should make one side of the ship non-smoking and the other side smoking. Then let's see which side sells out faster!:)

They already do that. There's the in side, and the out side. Which side do you think sells out faster?

I didn't realise there was an abundance of people eating stinking fish on their balconies.

Maybe it needs a poll....

Anyway, smokers should be pitied. Most of them would love to give up, they just don't know how to.

I am not a smoker and I always get a balcony. I think i can count one maybe two times I actually smelled cigarette smoke on my balcony. And when I did, the smell went away seconds later.

Maybe I have just been very lucky.

We had the same problem on Norwegian. We were on a cruise in Alaska and it was our first balcony. One of my kids has asthma and we were totally overwhelmed and grossed out by the second hand smoke. I just wanted to sit on my balcony and watch the glaciers go by.

I'm a former smoker and I didn't realize just how disgusting it smells until I quit 12 years ago.

I assume I should give up a balcony or even better I guess we should just stay home because I wouldn't want smokers to have to be inconvenienced because they can't sit on their balcony and stink up my cabin.

Maybe you should stay home, you seem to be upset because people smoke on there on their balcony were it is allowed.

Coughing is not generally something a person does by choice. But lets say, instead of coughing, he kept you awake all night with something that was a choice, like playing loud music in the middle of the night. Should you just be tolerant, or should the person be asked not to play loud music that disturbs his neighbors? It's very easy for people to say, as you did, "It doesn't bother me, so everyone should be tolerant of it."

It used to be an "unofficial" rule that the port side was for smokers and the starboard for non-smokers. I think it's a good idea!

Just speaking for myself, I would pick the non-smoking side and I have a feeling most would too, but of course that's just conjecture.

Maybe someone should start a poll asking those questions?

NCL tried this in the early 90's with the Norway and it failed miserably. It might be different today but I don't see it happening.

Carnival Paradise, many years ago, was a completely non-smoking ship! We loved it!!

It didn't last more than a few years. Apparently non-smokers don't drink and gamble as much as smokers and they were losing a great deal of revenue...at least that is what we were told!

I wonder how many of those people who have their cruise ruined by a next door neighbor smoking on the balcony can somehow tolerate it in the casino if they want to gamble on Royal Caribbean. Note: Celebrity does not allow smoking in their casinos.

They have non-smoking areas but I've smelled plenty of smoke in those areas when playing the slots and it doesn't "blow away" or even cease for a time. I can probably count on one hand how many non-smoking table games I have seen.

Some travel agents do not share with potential cruisers that Celebrity/Princess does not allow smoking on the balconies. I don't think if you book directly with the cruise line they tell you either.

I can guarantee within an hour of boarding Celebrity/Princess I will hear someone complaining that they got a balcony because they smoked only to find out they couldn't and weren't very happy about it.

If the person next to me has a problem with smoke I would hope that they would let me know. I am a considerate smoker. I would not hog up their balcony time with my smoke. But I also have a right to smoke. If Royal made their ships non smoking what a revenue loss that would be for them. I

How should someone let you know? Please give me guidance as to how I should approach my neighbor regarding their smoke. I agree they ave a right to be out there to smoke. I also have a right to be out there without smoke. I have lung issues so as soon as they light up I have to go inside. We have had several Instances where our neighbors seem to live on the balcony smoking! how can I approach them about "sharing" the balconies so we can both have enjoyable time on the balcony.

I'm not so sure about the revenue issue. We would be more likely to pay the higher price for a suite if we were assured we could enjoy the comfy balcony without smoking neighbors.

First of all, don't go into your lung problems with them. I'm sure it's valid, but that's not the issue.

The issue is you want to enjoy your balcony and you understand they also want to enjoy theirs. Ensure it is a two-way conversation. Something similar to "Hi--I can see you smoke and I appreciate your right to do so on the balcony. Is there a way we can work out a system so that I can also enjoy my balcony smoke free? Something in the line of -- if I come out and you are smoking, I'll go back in until your are finished. On the same token, If I am outside already, would you mind refraining for awhile?" There has to be some give and take. If it is a habit for the non smoker to camp out on their balcony all day, they also need to give a little bit so the smoker does have some opportunity to get that 5 minute smoke in.

I do smoke and I do give a head's up to my neighbors. Personally, I want the open communication. I let them know I do typically go out for a cigarette in the morning before I shower, and likely one after I'm ready. Then I am away from my balcony most of the day--I might pop in once or twice, but it is rare. The next time they can expect me out there would be getting ready for dinner/right before dinner. Then likely not again until it's time to go to bed--fortunately, we are late people and don't get back into our room until 1-2am most nights--at that point, the non smokers are well in bed.

I also make sure they know I'm not a peeping Tom, and tell them "if I come out and start smoking and you are outside, I probably didn't realize you were there, so please feel free to say something across the divider." Fingers crossed, no issues yet. On our next cruise, I purposely put my parents in the balcony next to us -- they are non smokers, but they'll go inside while I smoke. That leaves only the other side for me to worry about. Since our divider will be open, I'll smoke in the middle...

So more than half don't have a problem with smoking on balconies, so shouldn't the majority rule.

So I guess the smokers should have to holler over and say they are getting ready to smoke now when they are ready to smoke??? The non-smoker would say I'm going to be on the balcony for the next hour, so can you not smoke during that hour or should the non-smoker just get up and go in each time the smoker wants to smoke which could be every 15 or 30 minutes??????

I don't smoke and I love balconies but I know untill RCI ever ends smoking on balconies, I''ll just have to accept that the smokers have a right to be out there doing what they do and I won't ask them to limit their balcony time so I can have more balcony time! People make out that the people who smoke spend their entire cruise on the balcony smoking and the non smoker just happens to be out there at the same time all the time and is never out enjoying the cruise itself! On my last cruise I never smelt any smoke the entire week. If people were out there smoking when I was out there I never noticed it.

Actually, no. Majority rule is not the way such things are usually considered. (Also, it didn't say that more than half don't have a problem with smoking. It would be more accurate to say that more than half didn't list smoking as their biggest problem.)
