Do you use a lanyard for your sea pass?

I use a small lanyard that I attach to a belt loop than stick the card in my pocket. card doesn't get lost and it is immediately available when I need it to pay for drinks or for use at the casino. I don't like having a lanyard around my neck because it looks tacky in my opinion and it also gets to be irritating having to reposition the thing out of the way all the time.

Who cares what other cruisers think. You'll never see these people again, anyway. Do what YOU want to do and have fun doing it. I use a lanyard because it is easy for me to keep up with. Off the ship I tuck it down my shirt. Sure makes it easy getting back on the ship when they just swipe it and people are behind me digging in their wallets, pouches, camera cases, etc. When I buy a drink I just tuck the receipt in the lanyard with the card until I get to my cabin. Means I don't have to carry something around with me all over the ship. Buy a cute one and treat yourself. My BH has a Guinness lanyard and it was a conversation starter many times on our last cruise.

If you are referring to comments regarding looking like a "noobie" or a tourist, then you are correct - but that is just part of CC responses.

But if you are referring to comments regarding whether or not people use them, I believe the OP asked for the posters thoughts on them which IMO indicated some uncertainty about them, not just seeking an endorsement. Otherwise why post the question - after all, isn't wondering what other cruisers think what CC is all about?

As for me, if I am incorrect in the OP's intent, then they should just ignore my comment which was intended to offer an alternative by indicating that I would not use one and what I do instead.

I wouldn't take Emmasoma's comments being direct to you personally. Many people commented on how they wouldn't wear one and why.

No, but then I carry my small travel purse with me - which is another newbie dead give-away from what I've read. That's not likely to change as I go from a newbie to an experienced cruiser. I like my "stuff" with me.

I did wear a waterproof wallet around my neck on CocoCay. Unfortunately, with the RC safe's the way they are - you have to keep a credit card out to be able to use the safe - and I wasn't comfortable leaving that sitting in my beach bag when I'm in the water. So I kept my credit card, sea pass, and a bit of cash in my wallet with me all the time.

I could not imagine not using a lanyard either! I have a pretty beaded one that just looks like a long necklace. Since I tend to wear sundresses nearly exclusively I never have pockets to stick my card in.

I have never lost my card and always have it right at hand without having to carry something with me all over the ship. I have a small bag that I put my book and tanning essentials in when I am going to the pool - but the rest of the time I don't want to be burdened with anything more than an umbrella drink in my hand! :D

With or without a lanyard.. have a fabulous time on the cruise!!!!

Gosh. Thanks Emmasoma. Your response echoed what I've finally decided. I'm probably overthinking things waaay toooo much...I don't earn enough to go on cruises. This is sort of a freak chance that somebody is paying for my trip. So, I'm just trying to make sure that I've got all my bases covered as I really want this to be all it can be. I feel sort of like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory with a golden ticket.

I'll get a fun lanyard for running around the ship and to the pool...knowing I can always just take it off the lanyard for when it's less appropriate.

I know I asked for opinions...and I thank you for them. The reactions that have been tossed around...by looking new or like a tourist...amuse me a bit. I've seen what feels like hundreds of cruise vacation videos; NONE of them look native to the islands. That anyone would think that they would blend in or that they'd be safer...that's a riot. Thanks!

I wasn't. Just clarifying that I thought that was what the OP was interested in - more of who uses them and why not. And if I was wrong with that intent, then my comments could be disregarded as well.

It seemed that the majority of people on my cruise last winter wore lanyards. I found it to be very convenient. I bought the soda package and my lanyard had a buckle to detach the card and easily hand it to the bartender. I could quickly re-attach it and be on my way. I put it in a tote bag when on excursions.

I proudly wear my coil lanyard I get from the casino. I also put a puny flashlight on the lanyard.

In port it gets clipped into my purse. Easy to find without looking.

If you plan to keep sailing RCI, you can hang onto the next credit card that expires. You can then use it for your save and not worry about it being stolen or lost.

LUV our lanyards! Me and DH wear one. I don't have deep pockets in shorts and things tend to fall out of his khaki shorts pocket because he keeps putting his hands in there and taking them out. We wear one all the time, though I will admit to tucking it in my shirt on a wild ride (at disney) or putting it in my pocket during fine'er dining. Dh is very happy to wear a lanyard.

since I wear stretch jeans and knit pants ( without pockets ) yes I wear one on the ship. and as far as looking like a tourist off the ship because of a lanyard, I think all the shinny brand new tennis shoes in port are more obvious.

Yep. It's the shoes.

It's always the people in FRONT of me who are diggning around for their card. :D

We don't wear lanyards, I find them annoying and DH would be too embarrassed. I do like seeing them though, they always make me smile. Especially when we see them off the ship here in Florida. Often when we travel up the state we'll come upon a bus of people who just got off a cruise and so many will still have their lanyards on. If we have time to chat I always have to ask "what ship, where'd you go, what did you do, etc etc" :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have used a lanyard and I haven't. In mexico I did because I didn't have pockets. In Alaska I didn't because my clothes had pockets. Do what works for you. I found it very useful. And by the way, if you are in a port where cruise ships dock, locals can spot a tourist a mile away. Lanyard or not.

... and the local islander with bad intentions thinks to himself.." Hmmm, what do we have here...middle aged sunburned couple in the worlds ugliest tropical print shirts, carrying excessive number of t-shirt filled bags, taking pictures of rocks and trees, thinking they look good sipping a blue drink while a paper umbrella jabs at their nose. Could they be tourists? I'm not really sure.... Ohhhh, hey mon, I SEE A LANYARD!!!! NOW I KNOW FOR SURE!!

Yeah because coming on shore from a boat with a crowd of people, and we look so much like the locals and speak their language that they'd never know we weren't from there...YEAH!

I wear a lanyard for work everyday and there is the rare occasion when I forget to put it on and need to trek back home. On cruise ships I always keep my cruise ID in my wallet stuffed in my fourteen other credit and bank cards. This way I have it with me at all times and don't need to remember to grab it off a hanger or chair before we set off for the day.
