djh Posted December 15, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 15, 2013 There is a problem with the gas turbine engine and so they are moving us to the navy pier and we will be here overnight. They are going to allow us off between 6:30pm and midnight. Not a bad place to be stuck!

queen61 Posted December 15, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 15, 2013 Is it too soon to write off Cozumel? captain said repair update in the morning. is it possible that they would substitute nassau? OMG the casino is closed tonight! I suppose if there is not a fix there will be a bus ride in my near future. the bars are very crowded.

Hope the problem gets fixed so the rest of the cruise goes off without a hitch.

Dawniepoo Posted December 15, 2013 #15 Share Posted December 15, 2013 I just said to my dh that I wish we didn't have to leave, then 5 minutes later I learn we aren't. It's my fault. Several years ago, we booked royal Caribbean mainly to visit key west. Ship had engine trouble and we couldn't dock.....hope this isn't an omen for us!! c-legs Posted December 16, 2013 #19 Share Posted December 16, 2013 Oh boy......hope it doesn't follow the Millie with her problems Millie's '' problem'' was with one of her two azipods propulsion system. MAJOR issue...which necessitated major corrective process. Connie's appears to be with the turbine engine.
c-legs Posted December 16, 2013 #20 Share Posted December 16, 2013 I was surprised to see her re-docking in Key West on the webcam. Wondered what was wrong. Thanks for posting. Hope they get her fixed quickly so you can resume your cruise. I also noticed when she left the ''main ''dock near the Aquarium that two lifeboats/and-or/tenders were not there and the steel support apparatus was extended, as if ''ready to haul them up''....Quite a normal scenario when the Staff Captain decides on drill measures while in port....as they push off , they pick up the lifeboats/tenders, hook them up,stow them safe and sails away.... That looked OK ....until she swong to port and moved along the other dock ( ''Army Navy dock ? spl...)..and moored .... Turbine malfunction or otherwise, she wouldn't be allowed to sail at high seas with 2 lifeboats missing;;the USCG would have none of it.... SO? what will it be : turbine malfunction ( as mentionned by the Captain ) or Tenders/lifeboats issue ( as 100% evident to the naked and even uninformed eye...) ?? Cheers
CaroleSS Posted December 16, 2013 #21 Share Posted December 16, 2013 Ok, not a mechanical engineer......what's the difference between an azipod and a turbine engine? I'd guess they have different functions, but I don't know.
A Sixth? Posted December 16, 2013 #22 Share Posted December 16, 2013 (edited) Ok, not a mechanical engineer......what's the difference between an azipod and a turbine engine? I'd guess they have different functions, but I don't know. I'm not either but I believe the turbine, which is inside the hull and accessible, powers the azipod, which is outside of the hull and has very limited accessibility. bessinfl Posted December 16, 2013 #23 Share Posted December 16, 2013 We're aboard and perfectly happy. I'm sure they will get it sorted out. It's a lovely ship and nobody seems perturbed.
Rare Scrapnana Posted December 16, 2013 #24 Share Posted December 16, 2013 I watched her in FLL on Saturday and in Key West on Sunday and was thinking how good she looks. Cosmetically she is not showing her age. I agree if you have to get stuck Key West is a great place. At 1:20 local Key West time she is still there. Hope things will get fixed and you won't miss your ports.

Spot on. The gas turbines within the ship generate electrical power for the pods that hang below the hull. Hopefully this will make it easier to fix and is unrelated to the Mermaid pod bearing failures that plagued these ships a few years ago.
