IRL_Joanie Posted March 17, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 17, 2014 do you think Holland America will ever make their smoking rules stricter like no balcony smoking, princess cruises did, I have till next year to hope they do As a smoker and not very mobile, I find it easier to use my verandah than having to search out one of the 2 or 3 Open air spots that smokers would have to go to, that is as long as the Open air decks are not closed due to bad weather. You pay for your cabin, as do I and it is both of our rights to be able to use what we wish. I'm sure that most cruisers do not spend much time on their verandah, while that is the place I am for 95% of my cruise. I do not do entertainments nor bars due to allergies so my verandah is my place to smoke, legally:) I have very few options on cruise lines to cruise with while you have many many lines to choose from. As long as smoking is allowed on my verandah (or if HAL reverts to stateroom smoking) I will stick with HAL. Joanie
Rare Hlitner Posted March 17, 2014 #8 Share Posted March 17, 2014 We think the reality (with no spin) is that HAL will do whatever is in the best interests of HAL! That means that if they determine that having a liberal smoking policy is good for business...they will probably keep it! But if they determine that the smoking policy is costing them customers and not in HAL's best interests they will modify the policy. Currently, the lines who are generally considered the most competitive with HAL (Celebrity and Princess) have both banned balcony smoking. And now, RCI has also jumped on the no-smoking bandwagon. As to stateroom smoking, we doubt if it will ever return to HAL or any other cruise line who has eliminated the practice. It is just a matter of economics and safety. Smoking in a cabin is one additional fire hazard, and furniture and bed spreads are too often damaged by burns. And then the cruise lines have the problem of somehow getting all the smoke smell out of a cabin before the next cruise (this is difficult). Rare POA1 Posted March 17, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 17, 2014 If a hotel can completely ban smoking in rooms and balconies, why can't HAL? I'm not a smoker, but what happens when someone wants to grab a smoke and they're in the hotel with the restrictive smoking policy? They go outside to the sidewalk or the parking lot. That would be the ocean in this case.
Lulubelle45 Posted March 17, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 17, 2014 I for one am relieved to sailing on Celebrity as they don't allow smoking in most indoor areas including the casino. Just cutting through HAL Zaandams casino was enough to make me gag and I'm an ex smoker. That being said, smokers are a rare breed these days do I guess it's nice for them to have a cruise line that accommodates them. I myself will pass on HAL. Otherwise, given that you spend 95% of your cruise time on your balcony, that would mean your neighbours would only be able to enjoy their balcony for 5% of their cruise time. Unless, of course, they are also smokers. in which case it wouldn't bother them.

Krazy Kruizers Posted March 17, 2014 #14 Share Posted March 17, 2014 Just a thought -- but with some of the CEO's being smokers -- they need to have their verandah's to smoke on.

SeaWatch Posted March 17, 2014 #16 Share Posted March 17, 2014 Would you be offended if played loud rap music on my balcony? After all I did pay for it and it is my private space right? My point is: smoking on your veranda doesn't impact just you, it impacts others around you.

frankc98376 Posted March 17, 2014 #18 Share Posted March 17, 2014 I joined this forum to learn about Holland America. I want to hear about new ships, new policies, crew and cruise stories and reviews of cruises and ships by others. I am not a smoker- I quit smoking many years ago. That said, I know people that smoke, and live with a smoker (that only smokes outside- his choice). I don't hate them- they will quit when they are ready just as I did (or maybe some won't- not my business). I don't hate the smell and don't like the smell- I just don't care about it. These threads usually end up getting mean spirited and people's feelings are hurt- is that really what this is here for?. Why can't the Mods setup a sticky smoking thread (just like Princess) or even set up a forum titled "Cruise line smoking policies". Take all the arguing over there and let this board get back to being a happy place that people look forward to coming to and talking abut the thing we all love so much- cruising. I feel like I have gotten to know many people here and hate to see negativity and hurt feelings. And yes Joanie, I would definitely be sitting across the table from you at the Sea View Bar and I guarantee there would be a LOT of laughter! Rare Hlitner Posted March 17, 2014 #20 Share Posted March 17, 2014 We always get a bit concerned when some folks want to "limit" civil board discussions on any cruise related topic. For those who do not want to read about this (or other topics) it is a very simple matter to just ignore the thread (we are sure many choose to do this). In fact, I believe you can even use the "Thread Tools" to unsubscribe from the thread. Hank
iancal Posted March 17, 2014 #21 Share Posted March 17, 2014 It is not rocket science. If you do not like the smoking policy on HAL, for WHATEVER reason, then select a different cruise line. How hard can it be?

How hard can it be? While it might not be rocket science I do like HAL for a lot of reasons. You've made it quite clear that you do not favor one cruise line over another. There is nothing wrong with that but please don't expect that we all share that sentiment. Sooner or later the policy will change.

Joanie Does every Holland ship have a Sea View bar? Is it the one outside of the Lido buffet? (I'm studying deck plans). I feel very bad for you that you can't spend too much time around the ship because of not being very mobile. I guess because I am a fairly new cruiser, I delighted in poking around and exploring the ship. I'm not a sun-lounger person, I get bored easily.:o
jtl513 Posted March 17, 2014 #24 Share Posted March 17, 2014 I have till next year to hope they do It has been a couple of years (I think) since I last saw a survey that asked if we would continue to sail HAL with a more restrictive smoking policy, which eventually led to the banning of smoking in the cabin. When you see those surveys begin to appear again you'll know that they are beginning to think seriously about banning balcony smoking ... in a few years.
