Hurricane season in Bermuda

I could get a great deal on a cruise to Bermuda end of Aug/beginning of September, is this typically hurricane season? Has anyone ever had problems cruising at this time of year?

Yes it is still hurricane season there whether a storm will hit at that time maybe the weather service will know

No problems as such ......just quite rough once and the other 2 times it was smooth like glass.

We have been to Bermuda in July, August, and September. Have also been to all parts of the Caribbean in those months, and May as well. Never had any storms at all. Although they can occur at any time, just because it is the hurricane season does not mean there will be a hurricane.

The odds are very high that Bermuda will not experience a hurricane in the week of your cruise. They are impacted once, rarely twice, in a given season. That is one, rarely two, weeks in the twenty-six week hurricane season: say 26 to 1 (in a bad year: 13 to 1) odds against.

 

If you don't like the odds, book something else, otherwise accept the risk that you might see Halifax instead of the Dockyard.

Cruise ships have been rerouted during hurricane season. The captains will not chance going into a hurricane. If you are okay with that possibility then go ahead with the cruise.

Our destination was unknown when we left Boston .

The storm was heading north so Canada was out of the question.

We headed south along the coast with the storm to our port side towards the Bahamas . Watching the storm swirl on our left as we cruise in the sunshine for one extra day turning under the storm and into Bermuda a day late but unshaken .

 

Our captain did a great job keeping us safe in smooth seas and sunshine .

We went on a cruise to Bermuda last year the 1st week of October and absolutely wonderful weather. It was in the mid 80's the entire time we were there and no rain at all. So you just have to decide if you want to take the chance at that time of year but you can end up with some gorgeous weather.

In Sept. 2010 we were sailing to Bermuda out of NYC on the HAL Veendam. Unfortunately, a hurricane decided to "visit" Bermuda at the same time so we were re-routed to Charleston, Port Canaveral and Nassau. Not exactly what we had in mind but still had a great cruise.

If you look at my signature, you will see we have cruised in hurricane season quite often, and have actually encountered/cruised around/avoided (choose your verb!) 3 of them. Yes, some changes were made en route but we were never put in harm's way.

 

Thousands of people cruise during hurricane season every year and are absolutely fine. They have a great time. And so will you. :)

Hahahahahaha. We sailed RIGHT through a hurricane on September 1, 1996, Boston to Bermuda, sailing on the MV Royal Majesty (~30,000 ton ship). Actually, the ship was supposed to sail that night, but we stayed in Boston Harbour overnight. It was hurricane Edouard. The next day, after lunch, the captain set sail right into the hurricane just before it hit land. At that time, it was a Cat 2 or Cat 3. The ship was rocking and rolling all over the place. Anything that wasn't bolted down was flying across the room (pitcher of water, anyone?). That night was formal night, which most people attended in their sweats (if they were even able to leave their staterooms!), and most opted for ginger ale, soda crackers and apples. The big joke was you could tell the drunks from the sobers as the drunks were able to walk a straight line with all the movement, and the sobers were the ones staggering!

 

Not to put the OP off, but YES, hurricanes can affect Bermuda cruises, YES, they can occur over Labor day weekend and YES, some captains will take the risk and sail anyway.

We've been on two cruises to Bermuda in October. Year before last we were on one of the ships out of Baltimore during hurricane Sandy. The captain tried to outrun it but it was too rough so he came back and parked us in the Chesapeake Bay. We still had an awesome time, they gave us onboard credits for our trouble and we were not in harms way. We didn't make it to Bermuda that time but we had 7 nights in a "luxury all inclusive hotel". I can't complain and have a fun story to tell.

 

We made it to Bermuda last October and had a ball with no bad weather. Going again this October too. I think if you want to get to Bermuda you just have to take the chance that bad weather will happen.

 

It's beautiful there and worth the slim chance of a hurricane to us.
