Working out the "smoking thing"

I wanted to share a funny. A friend had smokers next to them on the balcony. Used a battery fan to blow the smoke back over to their side. They complained that they didn't want to smell the smoke. Friend did it twice and the smokers went elsewhere since they didn't want to smell their smoke.

Oh great, now I have to decide whether to pack a fan or the blender.

I do not have an issue with smokers on HAL. Smoking is permitted in various areas of the ship. This is no secret-HAL make this quite clear. So complaining about smokers smoking in areas where it is permitted is a bit of a non starter with me.

This is a HAL issue, not a smokers issue. HAL decides policy on their ships-the issue is solidly in their court.

Yes, and they sadly have made the choice to the be the "smokers" line. None of HAL's direct competition allows balcony smoking. We are in the the group that will sail HAL again when their smoking policy catches up with the times. It puzzles me why they are putting off the inevitable

We are with you on this issue. We like HAL. We have sailed with them six times and enjoy the overall ambiance. However, we shall not sail with them again until they catch up with the 21st Century.

Okay, folks may ask why I check out and post the HAL boards. I do it because I hope that someday that HAL will get the message and maybe someday I will read of them making such a change on these boards.

Keep checking ... Hopefully you can get back on HAL sooner rather than later. Changes can't be that far off ;)

Since none of HAL's direct competition allows balcony smoking, HAL seems to be making a unique niche for itself to differentiate itself from the competition and grab the smokers who may leave the other lines. That's actually good marketing. They may just acquire more new customers than they lose, or hope to.

I have packed my bag..waiting to catch my flight tomorrow..

now I am paranoid that I will :

-have smokers next to me

-not be wearing the right clothes

-not do the best or any excursions

-not get a good table for my "open" dining

-catch a virus

-have too rainy weather

-hit an iceberg

-check in too late and miss the boat

-gain too much weight

Maybe I should unpack and stay home :eek::eek:

I really do get a kick out of reading about HAL's smoking policy. I am a non-smoker who does not like the smell of smoke, but I love Holland America and will continue to add to my 17 cruises with them. I am also a gambler and enjoy playing the table games while onboard. Finally, I traditionally get a veranda suite as I do enjoy sitting on my deck, especially with a cup of coffee in the morning.

My point is, I am well aware of the policy as I book my cruise. I look for ports that I have either not visited or have visited and want to return. For me, part of the joy of cruising is the anticipation. A quiet dinner in the Pinnacle Grill, laying out on a cloudless warm day, the food and yes even trying the drink of the day. I avoid areas where smoking is allowed (except the casino of course) and take my morning coffee inside my cabin if my neighbor wishes to enjoy his cigarette at the same time I want to enjoy my coffee. So long as HAL maintains their policy, my rights are no greater than a fellow cruiser. I absolutely refuse to allow someone or something to upset me on my cruise. They are not responsible for my happiness - I am.

Perfectly stated and should be the bottom line! Thank you, and I agree!

I do agree (I don't do casinos - just don't like them, so the smoking there is a moot point for me) with being responsible for my own happiness and knowing the policy when I upgraded.

I guess I'm just stupid enough to hope that if I do have smoking neighbors they would be courteous enough to allow me a little time to enjoy the balcony I paid for as well. I'm not saying ALL the time, and I will happily allow them their time as well. I just hope for the same respect in return rather than getting someone spiteful who is all "this is my right and I will be here 24/7 just because I can." If I'm that unlucky, well, I'll just make the best of my time in Alaska with new running friends and then join the ranks of not sailing HAL again until their policy changes.

What does perfume have to do with smoking? Answer is nothing.

It is no more pertinent to the subject than are tattoos and overweight issues that were mentioned above.

The OP made this a smoking thread; not the 'change the subject' other issues."

Ok - I read the entire thread before saying anything - Now let's see - where to begin

Oh yes - Smokers - I am a non-smoker but have been married to a smoker for 40 years. DH has smoked for 50 years. I knew he smoked when I married him - but his smoking habit is not why (or why I didn't) I married him. Over the past 40 years I have watched him struggle on NUMEROUS occasions trying to quit smoking and watched him fail. He struggles with it everyday. But I still love him. I don't like his addiction but I live with it. He smokes outside in the summer and in the winter he smokes in the garage, with the garage door cracked so the smoke will not drift into the house.

Next - sorry Boyjtie - perfume was mentioned in one to the earlier posts and Sail asked what "perfume, tattoos and fat people had to do with the thread" in response to an earlier posting. Let's see - Smoking puts a lot of people into a tizzy - BUT what about the poor smucks who are HIGHLY ALLERGIC to smells such as perfumes that have been laid on so heavily that you would think they poured it into their bathtub and then soaked in it for two hours. That type of AIR POLLUTION can KILL me. The last time I had an episode was on board the Oosterdam and a lady got into the elevator and stood right in front of me. Luckily my DH had my EpiPen in his pocket and was able to give me an injection within a couple of minutes.

Third - sorry no tattoos - so you can't hate me for that

AND lastly - I guess I would be called fat - Because of a chronic illness that requires me to take Prednisone for the rest of my life - I went from a healthy 125 pounds to a "fluffy" 215. So I guess you can hate me because I am "fat".

I guess what bothers me so much about this whole thread is the complete INTOLERANCE that some people are projecting to other people. The really sad part about it, is that if you are intolerant of other people's physical shape, bodily art work, medical conditions (allergies or chronic illnesses) or unhealthy habits, then you really must be very lonely people and and therefore I guess I will have to have pity on you and say "Bless your hearts"

I don't know about you, but I plan on having a great time on my next cruise surrounded by smokers, fat people, tattooed people and people who have allergies. Why, because no one in this world is perfect and that is what makes it such an interesting place to live in.

I sincerely hope you find your niche in this world and are happy with it.

Statendam and Ryndam will be going smoke-free, unfortunately you'll need to travel down-under.

When they start sailing for P&O Australia, they'll be under P&O's smoking rules. From the FAQs of P&O -- come on HAL (Carnival Australia has the same policy)

Where can I smoke?

Smoking is not permitted indoors on any of our ships. This includes your room and private balcony. For those who smoke, there are selected outdoor areas where smoking is permitted and this information will be communicated to you onboard.
