Cruisinetta builds again! Boo/Transdam

And this one might be her last, at least she thinks so. Here's what she wrote to me:

Our CC group is building a dual ship. One side will be black/orange (Boodam) and the other side regular colors (Transdam). Should be very cool. Since it will be my last HAL ship, I plan on doing things to it that haven't been done before. It will be spectacular.

So, as usual, I'll post any photos she sends for everyone who enjoys following Cruisinetta's ship model builds. Here's the first:

"Pic one of the Boo/Transdam. This is the blue side. I have also done the black side. Will send a pic of that tomorrow."

Yes, those of us who enjoy the ship builds need to keep encouraging Cruisinetta to not end her building career with Holland America! Thanks for the support. She dropped me a note today saying that she's working on the sides and bottom of this unusual ship and there will be a photo tomorrow (Thursday, Oct 23). She's on the Noordam, by the way (I think!)

Cruisinetta says the model is "75% done" and this is the "Boodam" side. As to size, you may know the approximate size of a HAL round cabin table. The ship seems to hang over that and one end of the ship is supported on a chair. It's certainly not one of her miniatures. Cruisinetta's photos are on the small size this time; it's much easier to email those from the ship, but I enlarged this one, sacrificing clarity of the photo for detail so you can see how she makes the cabin exterior details.

If you look closely at the lower left of the model you can see the ship name--"BOODAM."

And this is the other side.

You can see that on this side the hull is HAL blue, not the gray-black that you see of the previous photo. I think we'll have to see the finished ship to appreciate exactly how this two-sided ship is going to work. A lot of detail is typically added last when Cruisinetta builds a model. We must not forget, too, that the whole CC Roll Call is participating so there may be more interesting details than she'd have time to do on her own. Even though this isn't a contest ship I'm assuming she's following her usual contest mode of using only materials that she scavenges on the ship (cardboard and such) and/or purchases at ports along the way.

I guess I'm new to this, can someone give me some background, please? So this person is on a cruise, and builds model ship while she's on the cruise? Or is it before/after? Is there a lot of sea days? And what happens to the model ships afterwards?

That looks like a lot of hours were spent on it. I am seriously wondering what the point is when you go on an expensive cruise and spend all that time in your cabin building a paper ship model. Am I missing something?

Thanks for posting Marney as always.

I'm curious, if you are talking to our ship builder, could you ask her what the fresh carrots were for that she was having left at her door?

I noticed when she was having her roll call scavenge for her that she requested that .....just curious. The carrots had to be fresh?

Possibly Orange (Halloween) accents for the "boodam" side of the ship (??)

We sailed with Lynn on the Noordam in 2012 when she was "building" the Poordam2. Amazing the detail that she puts into these models.

I sure hopes she continues with these "builds". At least come back when the Koningsdam joins the fleet.:)

Hmmm. Koningsdam... Coke(the basis of these builds)ingsdam...

That screams that it needs a model made for it. And will serve as a new challenge due to the differences.

I'm sure Lynn could meet the challenge.:)

And, a great excuse for a longer cruise.;)

So many interesting questions! A little background, but Cruisinetta can answer for herself when she can get online; she loves to talk about her ships! (She hasn't had much luck with the internet this cruise; thus the new photo I'm posting in this message was delayed a day.) There was a time when a Model Shipbuilding Contest was a regular shipboard activity of HAL (and others, I'd guess) and formal rules were posted, people designed and built, and sea trials were held.

The model had to support 6 cans of soft drink for the second half of the trial; if a model didn't sink or fall over when placed empty into the jacuzzi, then the second half involved placing the cans into a well or around the ship in some way, then the models were placed back in the jacuzzi. Times change and the ships like to do new things for entertainment and right now, shipbuilding isn't usually included. But Cruisinetta probably enjoys this as much as others of us like to read, go to lectures or movies, spend time in the casino, whatever. It is her relaxation activity of choice, and if there's no contest, she'll still enjoy the building and the ship staff has, I think, mostly been cooperative about giving her pool access toward the end of the cruise so the ship can go for its traditional sail.

As many of us are with hobbies, Cruisinetta's honed this one to a rare level; the detail is incredible but she just enjoys it. And enjoys teaching others, I think. Sometimes, when she builds miniatures (so small they can sit on the deck railing) they go to crew members who ask for them. Sometimes larger ones have been displayed for a cruise or two and probably disposed of, but it's the making of it, not the keeping of it, that she enjoys I think.

I first met Crusinetta on a cruise when she was building a contest model and she enlisted folks from the CC roll call to help. I've been posting photos for her ever since; I have an online server where I can store the photos so all of you can access them, even long after the cruise.

I do know what the carrots are for; mice will not be involved but I won't give it away! Besides, she might have planned something else. Just look around the ship though and see what is orange; you might figure it out.

So here's today's photo; she's showing the "Boodam" side of this ship which is unusual in that depending on the side you view, you'll see a different style of ship. She usually designs something into each that she's not tried before. This photo gives you a good view of how she uses cardboard.

Cruisinetta says that the internet has not been working out well for sending photos but we now have two more. For this one she says, " They had sign ups and we have 8 sign ups. Sea trials on Sunday. Here is the latest pic of the Transdam side."

So, there seems to be a ship-building contest going on!

And then sent a day later:

"This is it all finished except for the waterproofing and carrots. This is the Boodam side."

The waterproofing is some sort of plastic wrap that keeps all that cardboard from taking on water when the ship is in the pool. As unlikely as it seems, it does work! And yes, the carrots, I'm pretty sure, are being used as usual: she'll carve little ones down to size and they become the lifeboats, but because they're fresh she'll put them on at the very end.
