How bad is the Mosquito and other insect situtation in Brazil, Buenos Aires during their summer season. Many fellow cruisers are suggesting that we pack repellants...such as Deet. I was hoping to hear from someone who actually visiited/lived in these areas ..what their thoughts are.

.

Thanks.

Nor did we. However, we were not in the jungle areas.

If you're doing the Amazon, I think you want to bring along barrels of the stuff.

In non-jungle areas, it's not a problem.

Malaria is always a risk in the Jungle areas -- so definately bring if in that area. If you are going and doing a BA to Valparaiso cruise -- then not really. I do take Deet wipes on most of my cruises just in case as they are easily packed,

Why worry! Take some repellent with you, period!

Hey DrJ,

Consider the cost of your cruise.

Consider the cost of a bottle of repellent and a bottle of anti itch stuff.

Would you rather save the money or be itchy for a week?

Enjoy your voyage.

If you go into a Malaria zone then you really do need to take medication BEFORE going and AFTER you leave. There are several. Ask your doctor which is best for you. But remember to take the pills (6 weeks I think) exactly as prescribed or they won't be effective. I lived in Africa for almost 10 years as a child and got malaria. It is not fun. And "bug spray" won't stop you from getting malaria. But the pills do...
