Tipping at Crown Grill

... Whatever it would be a pool tip and shared if it was included. So the waiter wouldn't get much, Like writing it on the bill. I will still leave a tip in cash.

Yes, writing in a tip on "the bill", just gets it tossed into the tip pool. Your waiter will most likely get pennies from your tip. As been posted, assuming you leave auto-tip in place, and you give your waiter a cash tip, he keeps it all.

I can't say I've ever noticed any difference, indeed I am not even sure that a waiter would know what sort of room you had............................. in the past I have occasionally had crew ask me when chatting socially what sort of room I had, they didn't know from my card or room number even.

Apart from the cabin stewards - who would know - not many of the others get to the accommodation decks.

However if it makes for a happier cruise experience for someone to think that they are "special" by virtue of having paid 10 x as much for a suite as an inside then go for it.

Keeps the cheap seats cheap for me.

Oh, and I leave $10 for two usually, or $20 if I don't get charged corkage - happens sometimes.

When you stay in a full suite, the word "Suite" is printed on your cruise card, right under the Muster Station location, so the wait staff will see the word "Suite" on your card when ordering drinks.

And they know from when you make dinner reservations. Plus the specialty dinner outlet staff recognizes you from breakfast in Sabatini's (provided one eats breakfast in Sabatini's at least a few times ).

Basically every time one either provides their cabin # or a staffer looks up their name and they see their cabin # they know you're a Suiteholder.

I'm in the casino business and our staffs are trained in numerous ways to recognize VIP players and provide a range of special treatment to them. Taking care of higher-paying customers is good business in most businesses.

We are just off the Regal and we dined once in each specialty restaurant. In Sabbatini's the service was terrible, therefore no tip. In Crown the service was good, but no better than in the MDR and we put a 15 dollar tip on the bill. It has always been my understanding that when a service employee is tipped in cash, they are required to turn that into the pool, and that if they do not, they are placing themselves in jeopardy. Anyone know if that is true or not?

I know one waiter who was caught pocketing a tip in Sabatini's.

He was sent home immediately.

He now works for Celebrity.

  • 2 weeks later...
We have no issue or question regarding how much to tip at any of the specialty restaurants for dinner. However our question is how much should we tip when we are blessed with daily breakfast in Sabatinis because we took an upsell to a suite. Everyday there is a team of five servers working breakfast (we referred to them as the "Dream Team") so even at a minimum of $5 per person, per day, we'd be looking at $350 for a 14 night cruise.

Any thoughts?

We also tip in Sabatini's. Yes, sometimes it is 5 or 6 even, so we tip on a 10 day cruise each of them $10-$20 each depending on the service. Sabatini's really makes our trip and we have enjoyed he staff so very much. We look at it if we were going to breakfast we would leave $5.00 tip for 1 server, but seeing there are 5, we figure $1.00 each. We do tip at the end of each 10 day cruise. We have noticed that the majority of the people do not tip in there. I realize it is not necessary, but I am sure they appreciate it. We feel that we are fortunate to cruise and look at this as helping out someone that we have gotten to know and have made our trip more enjoyable.

....maybe because since we are all lucky enough to be able to afford a cruise vacation that any type of a tip is a "Gesture of Kindness" that I am sure is appreciated by the staff.

Well said dandonna. We feel the same way you do. Way too many people expect so much and don't tip at all. We aren't rich by far, however, we always allow as part of our trip to bring extra money to cover extra tips.

I can never resist clicking on any thread with "Tipping" in the title! Hold on because it's sure to be a rocky ride!!!:D

We always tip $10 when we eat at specialty dining, which we usually do twice per 7 day cruise.

The extra cash we bring onboard for tipping is just a drop in the bucket compared to the overall cost of the cruise but means so much to the crew.

We don't tip because we "have to", we don't tip because "others do", we don't tip to get a pat on the back or better service. We tip because it makes us feel good, knowing that even our little contribution just might make a big difference in another's life.

Feel the same way.

I am on the Grand Princess now. We ate at the Crown Grill twice. We received excellent service both times. On our first visit, we forgot to bring a gratuity. The waiter told us not to bother to put the tip on the bill because he'd never see it. I'm sure he meant it would go into the pool and be dispersed. On our second visit, we made sure to bring cash and he was very happy to see the tips. He did a wonderful job and we were happy to tip him. Super service for everyone at the Crown Grill.

Perhaps you should call Princess and inform them they are giving out misinformation to people over the phone?

Speak to 2 people in Santa Clarita and you will get 2 different answers, 3 people 3 different answers, 4 people 4 different answers and on and on and on, one of the most dysfunctional operations in the world. Just MHO.

A tipping thread is always entertaining. We tip because (1) to reward good service, (2) their cheapskate employers underpay them, (3) I'm on holiday and it is a, relative to the overall cost, a small amount that does some good, (4) we choose to.

Ps. We are Australian.

Pps. on the odd occasion when we haven't had the right sort of money for a tip I have never been chased down the street or received poor service on return. Staff in places where tipping is customary seem to take the non tippers as an occupational hazard.

If you want the tip to end up in the hands of the person who provided you with good service then pay it in cash, whether it be your room steward, dining room server, specialty restaurant server, Maître De or whoever.

I'm in agreement as far as the cash tip is concerned.

I think the Aussies have it right... But given "the American way" is tip-based (and employers use that to pay paltry wages) we tip cash for good service (we appreciate it when anyone does something for us) and more cash for great service.

It is my understanding through Princess Cruise Lines that if you leave the auto tip in place you are not obligated to tip extra. After reading so many contradicting replies relating to tipping and how and who it gets distributed to I just keep the auto tip on and let Princess deal with the rest. In the past would tip extra in the specialty restaurant until I started reading cruise critic. No matter what is said here in terms of who, how. why, or when someone gets to keep the tip it is all hear say. I have read every rule and exception that has been posted. The only hard rule I know is what Princess has set which is the auto tipping policy. Anything you give above the auto tip will be appreciated.

Then you have clearly never shorted a baggage handler and had some of your luggage damaged or dunked. They are not as forgiving.

Baggage handlers put baggage on steel cage carts. Those carts are put on the ship by forklifts. You think a baggage handler has time to personally spite someone curbside about a tip? (Never mind they are paid good salaries, good enough not to play games).

it's not an issue of "feeling special" Personally I like the bigger room and can't stand the tiny bathrooms in the ocean views and interiors (am 6'8")...and as I can afford it why shouldn't I be comfortable...Nor do I make any issue of what cabin I am in....but if it makes YOU feel good that your Vacation costs less because of the idiots paying 10X as much in the Suites....then do....enjoy your "cheap seats"
