ccrain Posted February 21, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 21, 2015 Mystery solved. Now its official how the Emerald will get to SYD in late 2016. A 48 day cruise from Southampton to SYD in September 2016. Eastern Bound. She will fit in the Suez, but will she go around South Africa given the turmoil in region? Either way, this will be the first of the Grand Class to go East Bound via SouthWest and SouthEast Asia. This would hit almost everything on our "must do" list in one cruise. Now that is very cool! paul929207 Posted February 21, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 21, 2015 Sounds like a wonderful trip. About a year and a half ago we sailed the Ocean Princess from Rome to Sydney, also 48 days. They need to make up their mind on the route (if there is any question) soon. To go around Africa would mean skipping most of the planned ports and substituting many sea days
ccrain Posted February 21, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted February 21, 2015 But I just realized, this would be an around the world trip for most of us in the US. Good thing I bought those extra FCCs!
paul929207 Posted February 21, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 21, 2015 Ours in 2013 was sold as two legs. Rome to Singapore and then to Sydney. So only 2 FCC and Shareholder OBC
chrysalis Posted February 21, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 21, 2015 Post #4 here suggests that she is heading to the Med in late September, so that likely means the Suez routing... http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2170723

caribill Posted February 21, 2015 #19 Share Posted February 21, 2015 She will fit in the Suez, but will she go around South Africa given the turmoil in region? Unless something very unexpected happens that would threaten safe passage through the canal, that will be the route taken. Any ports that might have safety concern are either not on the itinerary or will be dropped from the itinerary if the need arises. There will be military protection when sailing through the Red Sea and passengers will be given instructions on what to do and what not to do when it that area and if an emergency occurs. o Outside decks may be closed from sunset to sunrise o Those with windows to the outside must keep the curtains closed from sunset to sunrise. o Venues with windows that cannot be covered (example, gym) will close by sundown. o There will be 24-hour security personnel scanning in all directions

Shame there is no port stop for Isarel. I would have liked to see some of that area. But understand the area is viotile at times. Also go Egypt stop. No biggie for me as I've been to Egypt twice. Petra - been there twice. Once spend two days exploring it all. Would love to go back. The hike up to the top monastery is worth it all the 700 or so steps up. The Dubai overnight is interesting. I haven't been to Dubai except for transit. I wonder what excurisions they offer. Now I know there is good gold souks to visa if you like that sort of thing.
