NCL room service charge

Yes, and for people like some of my friends right here who are handicapped and need assistance walking, they could burn up even MORE calories, especially those who use a cane. They could practice their balancing skills carrying a cup of coffee and a croissant in one hand! There's probably little chance the coffee will be cold by the time they make it back to the room because they wouldn't have to wait for the elevator. People who are mobility challenged are known to be rapid stair climbers and can dash down the hall with both hands occupied without ever spilling a drop! Who needs room service?

Let only those who use the service pay for it is one way to look at it. At the moment every passenger is paying for room service whether or not they use it. Its an easy service to charge for.

Not saying I necessarily agree with that idea by the way, just saying.................

And of course there is always Holland America for those who need more assistance than Princess might provide in the future. Some cruise ships might at times resemble a floating rest home but they are not a floating nursing home. There is a difference.

What I don't understand is most passengers get upset by having additional charges yet some advocate that other passengers pay for things that they use.

As cruises become less all inclusive, why would anyone suggest to add additional fees? Where does it end? I rarely use room service but don't think that those who do should be charged a fee.

The food that is being delivered is still free; it will cost you though for the convenience to have it delivered to your room. What is upsetting people is that it was brought about with no notice what so ever. Those people on the cruise ship now (only two to start with) were not told about it. Also, when we booked our trip, this was a free service and now it is being charged. It is the way that NCL did it, slipped it in without any notice for people to plan and budget for the additional cost. And to do it during Spring break with a lot of kids on board, parents don't know the new rules and bam! room service charges without knowing you had them.

Unless they were all handicapped I guess they could have avoided the charge by going to other food venues to eat or collect food to bring back to the cabin.

Bad to introduce charges after passengers have booked thinking it was free though. Somewhat like when fuel surcharges came in a few years ago.

Passengers should at least be informed and given the chance to cancel without penalty.

it is however a fairly trivial charge compared to overall cruise costs.

Freestyle doesn't come free on NCL. From what I have read it seems you have to pay for a lot of extras including dining if you want variety and service. I really don't think their prices are much cheaper than the other lines. If you add all of the extras you could actually be paying more in the end.

At $7.95 a pop for delivery I would never use room service. As it is, I tend to give the delivery person a small tip. I can't imagine doing that after being gouged for a large delivery fee. The $3.00 for pizza is understandable for the reasons mentioned by others above.

I do use room service once in a while. Coffee, fruit, BACON, etc. for breakfast. :) Most of the time though we either eat breakfast in HC or, once in a while, in MDR. Occasionally we just grab something from IC. I love having choices.

On our last cruise I was sick at the end with not much of an appetite. It was wonderful to order a sandwich or soup whilt my husband went to the MDR for dinner. I was glad I didn't have to have him schlep food back to me. I like room service on days we have an early tour in port - I don't have to rush and navigate around the Buffet. I hope Princess doesn't go this route!

So just don't use it. Seems simple enough to me.

But if you don't know that the rules have changed about room service (because it happened mid cruise) and you go ahead and use it, you are then stuck with the bill. I guess you could refuse it at that point but you would probably still be charged for the delivery whether you accepted the food or not.

And some never use the pools, yet they are paying for the cost of maintaining the pools and staffing the pool area. Why not just have a daily fee for those who want the pool experience?

And some never go to see the Production shows, yet they are paying for the cost of the Princess Singers & Dancers. It would be easy to just charge those who want to attend the shows.

etc.

I didn't read the entire thread, but enough I think to comment. I just got off NCL Epic on March 15th and there was no extra charge for room service nor any service charge added to the specialty dining. We ate in all specialty restaurants; never in the MDR.

Pizza I know has an upcharge, but that's not an option for us anyway.

The speciality restaurant 18% gratuity started the day you got off! The Room Service charge 'test' is only on the Breakaway and Getaway at the moment.

I'll be on the Getaway May 23rd, but since we never do room service that charge won't matter. As for specialty restaurants, that will be interesting, since we've got the UDP for no charge.

Apparently the free UDP includes the 18%.

From USAToday

Norwegian Cruise Line is testing a charge for previously complimentary room service on two ships, but is throwing in an upgraded menu as part of the bargain.

The charges are $4.95 per order on Norwegian Getaway and $7.95 per order on Norwegian Breakaway, the line's two newest ships. The expanded menu includes more hot choices for breakfast, such as hot cereals and eggs and grilled tomatoes, as well as bacon and sausage. A wider selection of items is also being offered on the 24-hour room service menu on the two new ships.

Norwegian levies a $3.95 charge for delivery from midnight to 5 am. It otherwise did not previously charge for in-room dining, except for a $5 charge to deliver a pizza anywhere on the ship.

An explanation of the new policy is included on Norwegian's website as part of the Frequently Asked Questions page.

Norwegian's other 11 ships are unaffected, as are guests who are booked in suites or The Haven luxury section of Breakaway and Getaway.

On the NCL web site:

Is Norwegian Cruise Line now charging for room service?

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced an enhanced room service menu that is debuting on board Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway. The new menu offers an expanded selection for breakfast, in addition to a wider variety of options available 24 hours. Individual items on the menu remain available on a complimentary basis and a convenience charge of up to $7.95 will be added to each order placed (Room Service orders placed by guests sailing in Suites and The Haven will not attract a charge)*. Room service is one of up to 29 dining options offered across the fleet, and guests continue to be able to enjoy a wide array of complimentary choices onboard 24 hours a day.

*Prices subject to change.

Also, I see NCL has a limit on suitcases you can bring onboard:

How many suitcases can I bring?

Each person is allowed up to two pieces of personal luggage on board, with each piece weighing a maximum of 50 pounds.

I love Princess room service breakfast, especially when cruising scenic areas such as Tracy Arm, or when arriving in scenic ports such as Hilo, Hawaii, or Lahaina, or Kauai.

I choose my balcony for the scenic views in these places.

Room service adds to the experience.

Really? LOL. I can't imagine anyone needing all that stuff. Our one suitcase, for both of us, was 25" and under 40 lbs. Then again, we are not big people. :)

When I was a "baby" cruiser I took 9 - 11 pair. As time went on I found the necessity to be less and less. Last cruise I was down to 3 pair of sandals. Knew I wouldn't be able to go to gym, so left sneaks at home.

We were considering NCL for our Alaska cruise in September. We are going on Princess. One of the reasons is because of all the add on costs on NCL. I have never seen a cruise ship have so many added charges. Taking dollars and dollars over and above. Guess we will not be sailing NCL ever.

We are Princess cruisers but recently have been sailing NCL - a couple of reasons for that: NY port, casino at seas program & some different itineraries ............. we are not happy with the added fee but since we don't have a cruise booked with them, we'll do a wait & see.

Getting back to topic: we love room service in the AM for coffee. Nice to have that first cup without showering and dressing. Also if we have an early excursion, cereal, fruit, Danish will be enough breakfast. And, would this include ice too? For us, there never seems to be enough ice. Let's hope that Princess doesn't follow NCL.

I don't use the pool so why should that be included in my fare. I don't dance so ditch any live music for the canned stuff. Never been to karaoke so okay to throw that over board. Don't borrow books from the library so who needs one and I don't plan to marry in the chapel so don't need one of those on board either. BUT I do enjoy my coffee delivered by room service in the morning before I shower and get dressed for the day.

LOL. Ever notice how people who don't use a thing are the ones calling for an extra charge?
