Bill B Posted June 22, 2015 #101 Share Posted June 22, 2015 I love trivia, I'm pretty good (with science & nature questions... hopeless at 'entertainment') and quite competitive. However, there is a whole different breed of player that becomes almost psychotic - I've seen people literally frothing at the mouth when they disagree with the answer - and take competition to absurd levels. On one of my cruises, there was a team who was essentially unbeatable. They got 20/20 on every single game. They weren't that knowledgeable; but, they were on a back-to-back, had played every game the cruise before, written down the answers... and the lazy, assistant cruise directors were using the same questions! :(

[Even though we were giving most prizes away]. And while I agree about some gong over the top about wrong answers, I think they need to spend more time on setting the questions two really stand out as silly questions and/or lack of research: One was how many wheels on a semi-trailer? Now the answer to that will depend where in the world you are, in the USA they call them 18 wheelers in Australia you just won't see many [if any] 18 wheelers a standard semi will have 22 wheels the question was on an Aussie cruise they need to avoid those location based type questions. The other was "Who was Australia's first female Lord Mayor?" The answer given was wrong, now I could live with that. The problem as I was sitting with the daughter of the lady who was actually Australia's first female Lord Mayor who was traveling shortly after her mums death, she was deeply hurt. One of my favorites is how many dots on a set of dominoes. Of course the answer is based on how many dominoes are in the set. Double six sets have 28 dominoes. Double nine sets have 55 dominoes. Double twelve sets have 91 dominoes.
Magnum60 Posted June 22, 2015 #104 Share Posted June 22, 2015 Years ago before the cruise business developed (ocean liner days) gamblers would enter ships log contests. Keep in mind that ships back then didn't have casinos. To play you had to guess the distance the ship had traveled, in nautical miles, in 24 hours. The entrance fee to play was not chump change so the winnings could be considerable. No tote bags for these folks ;). Tech killed ships pool contests a long time ago with the advent of GPS. I hope friendly shipboard trivia contests don't suffer the same tech fate due to a handful of cheaters with smart phones, large egos and win at all costs mind sets . DavyJoneses Posted June 22, 2015 #106 Share Posted June 22, 2015 DW and I were talking about a Panama Canal cruise we took a couple of months ago. She told me she attended a trivia game aboard the ship where some people were using smart phones and tablets to look up the answers.Someone in the crowd brought it to the attention of the young lady running the game and she asked everyone to put away their devices. Considering the minimal value of the prizes awarded at the trivia games, I can't believe anyone would cheat----especially if they were paying for internet minutes. I bet those people who were cheating at trivia are among those who have their automatic gratuities removed from their onboard account and buy one all inclusive drink package and get drinks for their spouse and friends. Never having done the trivia thing on a ship, just a quick question. Is there anywhere in the rules that say you can't use a smart-phone - sort of like "call a friend?":)

madnsneaky Posted June 23, 2015 #109 Share Posted June 23, 2015 To be honest, that's why I prefer different kind of trivia where someone can't just look up the answer - recognizing music, for example. I've played ones with TV theme songs (although it would be nice for them use a TV show made after the 70s for a change), or 80s' one-hit wonders. Obviously, someone who's been doing b2b cruises might still remember the answers, though. This may not stop the cheaters, there is an app you can get on your phone which will tell you what song is playing in the room. Very handy for me, but not for cheating at trivia :)
KruzPrincess Posted June 23, 2015 #110 Share Posted June 23, 2015 Someone mentioned that wifi is too slow to get answers fast enough.... Sometimes, trivia games are held while the ship is in port, so no worries about cost or slow internet.

Is there anywhere in the rules that say you can't use a smart-phone - sort of like "call a friend?":) It is called trivia not researcher. The point of trivia is to know and answer by use of team's brain trust (not other devices or material) the trivial questions so that you can win a insubstantial prize or some cudos. I am not sure of the ship's rules but I would think it is against the spirit of the game. :D

GUT2407 Posted June 23, 2015 #116 Share Posted June 23, 2015 once cruised with a couple who cheated by 30 years earlier having a son so they could get the more modern music. While us oldies struggled with anything after the 70s ;) Now that's cheating . john watson Posted June 23, 2015 #119 Share Posted June 23, 2015 (edited) A few years back when "Political Correctness" started to come to the fore; (for a bonus point name that year) the P&O (UK) cruise line staff when giving out the prizes started to say "You have won a pension book holder, but we're not allowed to call it a pension book holder so it's now a cheque book holder" Apparently it was stereotyping the passengers. Of course they have got past this stupidity as nobody has their pensions paid out in the Post Office using a book full of xxxxxxx. (name the missing word - answer at the end. Princess Cruise Line are not as affected by Political Correctness and just say that if you win the trivia quiz you will get a SHIP PRIZE. Nobody has ever challenged the policy just sought clarification on what they heard. DMRick Posted June 23, 2015 #122 Share Posted June 23, 2015 (edited) We are seldom in the US on our cruises, so the wifi would still be slow and expensive. We have played trivia with some people who knew nothing and people who have a vast amount of trivia stuck in their brains. We even played with someone who had once been on Jeopardy. He said he did well, but you couldn't tell it by us. He insisted we only use his answers and by the end of the second week, with all loses, he was having a problem getting anyone to play with him. My favorite teammates are teachers that teach general classes. Except when they ask me to write down the answers and inform me spelling counts lol. My second favs are people who cruise for months and have good memories lol!! Someone mentioned that wifi is too slow to get answers fast enough....
