For some reason the more casual photos of my husband and me really turn out pretty good on most cruises--even the silly embarkation or port photos. We don't really take pictures of each other much--especially not of me, since I'm usually doing the photographing--so it's nice that we have decent pics of the two of us at least once a year.

On the other hand, I don't think we've ever had a formal photo I really liked--they all seem so stiff and overly posed. We've only bought a couple of those.

The price is a deterrent--I'd definitely buy more at a lower price. $35--no way.

I love the ships that have kiosks for viewing your photos digitally. So much easier, but it is still nice to hold the actual photo in my hand when deciding.

Regent Seven seas doesn't have photographers anymore. No pictures at all. I don't think Oceania has them either. Some of the nicest pictures we have we're formal ones taken on cruises. Someday, you will of wished you had purchased them for $35! What's $35 when you have memories that last a lifetime. Most passengers drop $35 in the casino in less than 5 mins.or at the bar.

My theory is...if you can't remember it without a picture, it's not worth remembering.

Much truth here but some photographic documentation for family members many years later buffers that statement a little ;).

When you can buy digital cameras so inexpensively that they are basically disposable and likely cost less than a few on board photos just ask a fellow passenger to click a few pictures of that special moment and respectively decline the ships photographers request to photograph you.

You should avoid asking a crew member to photograph you or your party because you will unintentionally be creating a conflict of interest between the ships photo staff and the crew member.

THANK YOU! I hadn't realised this might cause a problem for the staff. I did wonder about getting a crew member, using my camera to take a photo of me in the hot tub, but I'll do it myself, then put the camera in my bag and secure the bag and my walking sticks to the railing. Won't knowingly put a crew member's job at risk. I hadn't thought about it, but it does make a lot of sense.

How many 8x10's does one person need? I take 1-3 cruises every year and the Christmas cruise is with my 84 y/o DM, so I like to get a picture. But 8 x 10??? Make some 4x6's or 5x7's. They do, but not often. Most of the ones I've bought are put away as I just don't have space to have 10 8x10's photos hanging on my wall!

Does it really matter how many a person needs? It is their choice. Personally, we do not buy them now as we have our own camera and can always find someone who will take a pic of us, even staff at times.

I couldn't imagine paying $35 for the quality these photos are (or lack thereof). Even at $25 I've always felt they're overpriced for what you get. Far too many of the pictures I see out for sale are either noticeably over or under exposed (generally over). And heck, if I'm noticing that, they're pretty off.

Totally agree. I find it hard to believe that a group of photos can be so bad. You could do better with a $50 P&S camera.

The photographers who go ashore have an assignment based on the number of pictures they take. If it's 105 degrees out in the blazing sun, do them a favor and let them fill their quota so they don't have to stay out all day.

Let me rephrase it then. I don't need that many 8 x 10's and would prefer if they printed smaller pictures. Happy now Oxo?

Yes, now I fully understand what you were trying to say. That is one problem with reading a persons postings. You really cannot interpret their true meaning since you are reading it without facial expressions, etc.

This is contrary to my experience -- any waiter, head waiter, cruise staff

member -- really any customer facing person is happy to take a picture

for you. Passengers frequently hand a camera to a waiter and ask them

to take a picture of ... a group, a birthday cake, whatever.

In general, there is no love between departments, and no concern

about 'conflict of interest'.

Yup, I've never seen a crew member (at least one that's not actively engaged in a duty that would prevent it) look at all annoyed at being asked to take a picture for someone. (Although I admit I don't ask crew myself, but that's more because I don't really have any interest in being in the picture anyways.)

Just off Ruby this morning... formal pics were $25. If you want digital copy, add another $10. You must buy the print to get the digital, so that would be $35. Also, no packages of different images were offered - only a few packages with different sizes of the same image.

Never found a fellow passenger or other random person that wouldn't be more than happy to snap a picture, be it with the smartphone or my DSLR. That simply experience makes me wonder about those who are fascinated with selfie sticks, versus just asking a nice neighbor.

I would not be keen to hand over expensive equipment to a stranger be it on ship or in foreign port. And people seem to have a penchant for taking blurry torso shots instead of clear head shots

I believe 'selphie' in this case stands for 'self-absorbed'.

They probably don't realize there is anyone else on the

planet with them.

Princess is in the dark ages on this item. They need to digitize all photos and have 2-3 kiosks onboard for viewing, or better yet display them on your cabin TV. Printing proofs and hoping people with buy them is a waste of money which drives pricey per unit pictures.

I say this, yet we somehow bought 5 formal pics.

Don't get me started on the upcharge for digital rights.

Over 3000 passengers and only 2 or 3 kiosks?

The Royal has 14 kiosks for this and I rarely saw any of them in use. However, I saw many passengers looking at the printed photos.

Here is one of those kiosks.

990104005010415PhotokisokinPhotoGallerydeck6DSC05383_zps4f19b422.jpg

IMHO, when pictures are only available for ordering at a kiosk (or also on cabin TVs), I predict sales will plummet. I do not think most passengers will take the time and effort to locate their pictures that way. It is one thing to pass by printed photos and say "Hey, we have a minute, let's look for last night's photo." It is another thing to say at the end of the day "Instead of going to sleep, let's spend some time finding our photos on the kiosk."

In addition, the software in the kiosks needs to be greatly improved. It is not always intuitive for finding your pictures.

Here is one screen where you can pick the day and time or event that your photo was taken (you do remember the day each picture you want to see was taken, right?).

990104%20009%2001.04.15%20Photo%20kiosk%20-%20list%20of%20events%20for%20a%20day%20DSC05387_zpsz1ihy7ij.jpg

And having located the day and event, now scroll down to locate your picture.

990104%20018%2001.04.15%20Photo%20kiosk%20-%20dining%20room%20photos%20DSC05397_zpsig1ofpuk.jpg

Others can share pictures with you as shown below. We have no idea who these two sets of people are. I expect the persons they wanted to share these pictures with never were able to see them. I suspect when you want to share you give a cabin number to share with.

And yes, you can bring up the pictures it identifies as yours via facial recognition. It currently uses the photo they take when you board the ship and is associated with your cruise card. It may not be able to locate all of your pictures as we were unable to locate one of ours at the kiosk no matter what paths we used to locate it. Neither could the photo staff locate it on the kiosk. They did find it on the rack of printed photos.

$25 for an 8 X 10 print is outrageous. If that included retouching, etc., I could maybe see it, but from what I've seen, it doesn't.

I'm a photographer and I would never think of paying that for a picture. I have a camera and I ask someone on the ship to take a picture of my son and me if I want one. The only one I think I ever bought was a formal pic on our first cruise in 2012.

It is good for people who like to frame the picture themselves,

rather that have some stranger cut off their feet.

I remember having the same sort of thing for a pocket digital

camera about 10 years ago. These kids -- they think they

invent everything.

I'm just the opposite cb at sea - if I don't have a photo of it, it never happened! I take a gazillion photos when we travel and love to come home, edit them and research any sights in faraway places that I can't readily identify. And I go back to view my cruise photos very frequently - a great way to re-live happy memories.

The only time we purchase shipboard photos are when the kids and grandkids are with us so we will have group photo as a memento. Like most of you, we feel they are overpriced.

Over 20 Cruises and purchased about 4 photos. One photographer used an amazing lens and I looked great Foran old bird. Bought that one. Other photos show me as I am. Don't need photographic reminders of this!! LOL

If you're a professional photographer and you aren't charging a sitting fee, you aren't charging enough for your work. If you're not a professional photographer, please realize it takes a lot more than just a camera to make it all happen. The backdrops, lights, triggers, stools, etc. aren't free.
