White Bay ferry service

Recommended Posts

I have been told by an "extremely reliable" source that there will be a ferry service operating between Wynyard Station/ Barrangaroo and White Bay Cruise Terminal before the start of the summer cruise season and although I cannot divulge any real details at this time there are some interesting features of the service for those of you who would use such a convenience.

While I am yet to sail from White Bay, that is great news and about time.

Would be better from the Quay but better than nothing

Yes, great news but agree easier from the Quay!

BTW - great to hear from you again Graham. Have you got the OPT up to scratch yet? I'll be checking it out again in November!

I was at a diner last night and sat with a person who I suspect may know what's going on (I also suspect may have been gbenjo's source). He said that they are trying to decide between a few options:

A. WB to near CBD PROBABLY near Bangaroo or King Street only running on mornings ships at White Bay

B. incorporate White Bay into one of the daily services, mperhaps (I think he said) Balmain to Circular Quay.

From what was said if they go with A It will probably run from about 7:00-1:00 as needed. The question is transport from CBD end.

B. has ready transport at CQ end, but overcrowding is a potential issue with regular commuters and then a few hundred people with luggage.

Any thoughts on those options?

Being a country person, I like getting close to Circular Quay as an option. A quick train trip gets you to the country rail and bus interchange as well as the airport. Barrangaroo was a bit of a pain to get to, nowhere near as bad as White Bay though.

That would, indeed be great!! Tried it the other way to board Celebrity Century last November at OPT - caught the ferry from White Bay after dropping luggage there. Seemed a bit bizarre at the time, but worked well and was a great start to a cruise. Sydney Harbour is amazing from anywhere, anytime.

The luggage is the only thing I can think would be difficult to cope with?

B seems much more sensible. There's a question of viability, and if it's not a regular service people forget about it.

But incorporating into a regular service, where relevant, just makes a route variation which is done more frequently. It enables the existing economics to be viable without the risk of too few passengers from the company's side, and too infrequent services from the passenger's side.

Steve, they are currently building a pedestrian link between Barangaroo and Wynyard Station. http://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects-wynyard-walk

Might not be quite as easy as the OPT to Circular Quay station though.

Hi Folks

Oh dear sounds like Graham has organized another "Red Carpet Special" and me having canceled my next departure from OPT in favor of "Station Pier" (Melbourne)

I wonder if we can persuade Graham to come to Melbourne so we can get the "special" treatment we deserve ?

:p

Regards

John

I can just see it now a champagne buffet and dancing girls all the way to White bay ....

:D

Could someone please let we "foreigners" know just what this possible ferry service might mean to us when we are trying to travel from our respective hotels to white bay to board our cruise ships? All the comments about starting points and buffets and casinos etc means something to you, but not to us! Also, all the abbreviatios and initials do not mean a lot to many readers from away. I understand it is difficult to get to the embarkation point at white bay,but assumed a taxi would do the trick. Is this new idea helpful? We are staying on Macleay street in Potts point if it will be affected.

Thank you.

Sorry, muffin. We've been indulging in a bit of local banter. :o

WB is White Bay Cruise Terminal.

OPT is the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay.

At the moment the only way to get to White Bay is by taxi, shuttle bus (if provided) or private car. There is no other easy public transport option to the city. A ferry would provide a direct link from White Bay to the new Barangaroo development on the north-western side of the city, with a pedestrian link to the Wynyard train station. Passengers embarking or disembarking without too much luggage would be able to use this option instead of a taxi. Also passengers on B2Bs or port stops would also have a cheaper and easier way to get to the city and main tourist attractions.

From Potts Point it would be best to get a taxi though.
