The Voice of the Ocean

My thoughts exactly only you probably said it better. As soon as I saw the e-mail, I just knew there would be a bunch of naysayers and conspiracy theorists posting negative comments about Voice of the Ocean here on CC.

Personally, I'll go and see how it is. The participants certainly deserve credit for trying. Princess deserves credit for trying something new as well.

Yes, I'm always open to try something new. We are on Regal Nov 8th, shortly after the roll-out, so if we make it to some of the performance shows, I'll post some comments.

I must admit that I am a fan of the "Cocktail Karaoke" that was held on the Pacific Princess. There's nothing quite so funny as hearing drunk people sing. :D

I'm sure that my renditions of "Santa Baby", "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", fall into the category of "passengers who can't carry a tune in a bucket".

My goodness boys and girls....seems like many have their panties in a bunch. After reading all the available information it appears that it is just a "game" similar to playing trivia. Those that think they have talent can perform at certain times; guest coaches will pick a team and throughout the cruise the team will receive some mentoring by some of the Guest Performers and regular Princess singers. Then on the last night of the cruise there will be a final competition to find the winner. Geeze people, lets not start a mutiny before we've even gotten the chance to see it play out.

Exactly! Rule #1 of karaoke: The quality of the entertainment is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed just prior to and during said entertainment.

By the performer? By the audience? By both?

I don't think any of us care as long as this event doesn't replace professional entertainment in the evening. Carnival has substituted the Hasbro game shows for one night of regular entertainment in the main theater. It's one of the primary reasons I haven't sailed on Carnival since a year ago last February, (although it is their total entertainment package that has turned me off.) I don't want to see this happen to my favorite line, Princess.

So far, there has been no indication that this talent competition will replace any of the other shows. I think it will just replace regular Karaoke.

We saw the very first 'Voice of the Ocean' on Monday night (Nov 9th), the last night of our 10 day Eastern Caribbean on Royal Princess. During the cruise there were auditions (which we never went to) and I believe 8 contestants were chosen and then they were mentored by the cruise ship's singers and dancers, ready for their performance on the final night. We only went to the final show which was at 7.30pm - not the best time to fit around mealtimes, so for the first time ever, we went for pizza later on instead of eating in the restaurant. It was a nice change.

The show was very well done, there were 3 real 'Voice' chairs and judges. Two of them were acts who'd performed during the cruise, Scott Alexander (comedy magician), and Stephani Parker (singer), and the third judge was the ship's Hotel Manager. The ship's band and two show singers performed with the contestants. Lisa the CD introduced each act by number. They were all very good. The judges picked their favourites and the contestants chose which judge's team to go with. Then each judge chose their preferred winner from their team. That left 3 contestants, then the audience had to vote for a winner using electronic selectors (?). The winner was a brilliant young singer, Vicky from the UK, who sang Adele's Rolling in the Deep. There was even a Voice After Party in Club 6 later in the evening.

Did the contestants receive anything for their participation? That seems like a big time commitment during the cruise- the auditions, coaching sessions and live performance.

I don't actually know. She got a bouquet and bottle of champagne. But you are right, it was a big commitment. Still, they did choose to do it. I would think she would have some local recognition when she gets home maybe?

We saw the exact same format you describe, right down to the "coaches" being two of the onboard entertainers and the third the hotel manager and the CD hosting on the Regal earlier this month. We really enjoyed it however it does mess with the evenings dining. On the Regal it began in the theatre at 7:15pm and didn't end until nearly 8:45pm. In the last half hour I noticed lots of folks leaving (probably to dine). It was well attended although there were several seats still available through the theatre. They were simulcasting it to the Vista Lounge as well which I think was a bit of overkill due to the theatre not being full. To that end though, we sailed on a ship only at about 75% capacity.

Yeah, I know it's a choice. I was just thinking that if Princess is going to use passengers for entertainment, they should get something in return. I'm not a singer so it won't matter to me anyway. [emoji12]

I was one of the 8 finalists on the first ever Voice of the Ocean on The Regal 10/10/2015 Canada New England. It does not take up the time like it sounds. One Karaoke night song, next morning a rehearsal for 8 with a pianist of the abridged songs for the final (about an hour in total if you chose to stay after you had sung), two of the Princess singers were there to advise. A 5.30pm rehearsal with the band in the Vista two days before the final again with the Princess singers (same time frame) and a dress rehearsal in the Theatre three hours before the show. On the first morning Coffee, Juice,Pastries and Doughnuts were provided. On the night of the Final we were given a tour backstage where we stayed for the Show "Champagne"( I use that term very loosely) was free flowing as was Juice bottled water and Chocolate Strawberries ( I managed to snag a beer). The Show was shown on TVs backstage so we got to see it too. Our friends and family (I only had my Wife) were treated like VIPS and seated at the front in seats marked with their name. After the show we were escorted to a roped off VIP area of Club 6 for an aftershow party with more of the dreaded "Champagne". It was a lot of fun and a great experience to sing on that stage to approx. 1000 people. The Winner Campbell from Scotland won a quite heavy trophy which was a replica of the Voice trademark hand holding a microphone and we all got a bottle of "Champagne" God help us for participating. I hope that helps:)

Hi Billy, so the show we saw last week wasn't the first ever, it was the first on the Royal? They didn't explain that clearly. Well done on getting to the final eight, and thanks for explaining how it all worked. Glad you had a good time, and hope you got to enjoy Canada and New England too. We did the same cruise last October.

On our September transatlantic they did a 1 night version. They had 3 performers as judges with their chairs turned around. They'd turn if they liked a contestant, and the contestant would pick a coach. Each coach got only one contestant, so a later contestant would knock out an earlier one. After the auditions they had a 5 minute coaching session, and then they had the final. I left during the coaching session, so I don't know how the final played out.

I guess this was a precursor to the real one - it seemed kind of stupid to me, but maybe that's why.

We saw this mess on the Royal Princess during our 12/30/15-1/9/16 Eastern Caribbean cruise. Went to the final to vote electronically among the three finalists. Ended up walking out, along with alot of others, when the judge who was a professional singer picked a "homer" (the judge said she was from England too) English girl over a obviously more talented guy from Texas. This was just to get into the top three. Would have been okay with me if the guy wasn't voted best (some people just don't like country western) but he was definitely one of the top three. Don't know who won. Don't care. Waste of time and it was scheduled badly to mess up dinner seating/reservations.

I agree. I thought it was a poor re-tooling of the former Karaoke contests. Most of the singers were not that good (serious pitch issues). The "coaches" don't actually do any coaching at all as they only show up at the final in the theater and just end up selecting a "team" and like TV don't offer any real critiquing. On our cruise one guy was good and they put him up last and he slayed the voting.

Hubby and I went to two different "Voices" on our Nov./Dec. cruises on the Royal. Maybe we just got lucky but both contests were awesome. The judges were funny, the singers quite talented and everyone seemed to have a great time. It really was a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing it again next time.

We enjoyed Voice of the Ocean on the Royal's Christmas cruise.

I thought it was very well done. We had 7 talented contestants with the Hotel Director, guest comedian and band singer as judges.

Several of the singers indicated that they participated in the Pop Star contest on previous Princess Cruises.

It was something different and for me more enjoyable than another 3rd rate comedian, magician or even worse, a 'mentalist".
