Passport turn around time?

We have a last minute add on to our Oct. 4th cruise. Any chance of getting a new passport before then?

official estimate is 4 to 6 weeks for a routine application, 3 weeks if you pay for expedited service ...

It took 6 weeks for my son and granddaughter to get theirs and 7 weeks for my daughter-in-law even though all were sent in at the same time. They applied in early May for a cruise the end of July.

From what I have been reading it is taking about 7 - 8 weeks for passports right now. I read that they were having technical issues with the computers. Going to get mine sent in soon just in case they are taking this long.

Is it faster to get renewals than first time passports?

I think that it is supposed to take the same amount of time. I wouldn't be surprised if a first time application took a little bit longer though.

If you go in person and present good cause and pay for expedited passport, you can get one quick.

Mine expired in March and I have two trips planned, one starting Friday. I mailed my renewal application on July 5th. I received my new passport (standard service) by the end of July. Did not pay for any expedited service. You should be fine.

No you don't have to have a passport, but he has elderly parents do he's playing it safe.

We renewed my son's passport in June and it took just over 7 weeks. No quick turn around this time.

18 days from mailing to receipt of passports for 2 minors (first application). This was late June to July with Standard processing times/fees. Paperwork was prepared online, printed, and brought to a USPS location for completion.

Most of the time these days, the turn around is less than three weeks. It can be more, it can be less, but that is about what most folks see.

There is a thread over on the First Time Cruiser's board titled "for those curious about passport turnaround times" that you can check for some up to date information. I think if he applied now he would probably receive it before 10/4 and if he pays for expedited processing almost assuredly will have it before than.

DH received his renewed passport in 6 weeks + 2 days. It was sent to the Philadelphia passport center.

I personally believe that where the passport is routed has an impact on turn around time.

So, my advice is to believe the 4-6 week turn around and plan accordingly. If it were me, I would apply with expedited service.

Use Travisa.com it costs more but guarantees that you'll get your passport in time. Maximum time to get it is 3-10 business days.

Unless something goes totally wrong you'll have your passport in plenty of time.

 

I pay the extra fee to expedite it whether or not we really needed too and also have it sent express mail back to me.

You don't say where you live, but on the off chance you are UK based. I renewed mine online in June and they were back within two weeks. Much quicker if you are just renewing and don't have to send off documents it can be quite quick.

When it was time for us to renew our passports, we sent them in on the same date.

I got my new one in 2 weeks. DH got his new one in 6 weeks.

Can't predict what will happen.

Sent my renewal application in on July 24. I received my new passport today. Almost exactly 4 weeks. DH's on the other hand took over 6 weeks. His was mailed in in June. June to July seems like a busier time.
