Rare TLCOhio Posted September 21, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 21, 2015 From CBS's Morning News within the past few minutes, they had this video story and headline: "Kate McCue makes waves and history for women at sea". CBS News's travel editor, Peter Greenberg had this story with lots of interviews and video details on Celebrity having the first female ship Captain. This included an interview segment with the female President of Celebrity cruise lines. Among the story highlights: "Kate McCue is at the helm of the Celebrity Summit, with more than 2,000 passengers and a crew of almost 1,000. She is the first American woman to do so. Captaining cruise ships still remains a profession dominated by men. But McCue's boss, the first female chief executive of Celebrity Cruise Lines, said she hopes McCue's example would 'makes girls and women raise their hands and say, 'yeah, I think I'd like to do this too.' " Interesting story and background for being a ship Captain, her hard-work, interests, etc. Her husband is a First Engineer with Celebrity, but they do not do sailing together. The story also noted: "She started as a cadet at the California Maritime Academy in 1996 when men at the school outnumbered women 15 to one. Nineteen years and 10 ships later, she is now a maritime master in charge of her own ship." Anybody having sailed with her? She seems very out-going, nice and skilled. Full story at: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/kate-mccue-first-american-woman-to-captain-cruise-ship-celebrity-summit/ THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Enjoyed a 14-day, Celebrity Solstice Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Sydney to Auckland adventure, getting a big sampling for the wonders of "down under” before and after this cruise. CruisingChick Posted September 21, 2015 #4 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Loved sailing with Captain Kate this past week on Summit. She is the "voice inside your head." She was charming and very visible all around the ship.

Wishing Captain Kate all the best of Success as Summit's Captain, and in her Celebrity career :) For my 15 years of cruising on numerous different cruise lines, I don't ever recall an American captain. Also saw the bit on CBS news this morning, it was on in the waiting lounge while I was waiting to get my car serviced and it was very nicely done. Learned all captains have a tattoo :D Wishing Captain Kate the best success.

ChucktownSteve Posted September 21, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) I love Capt. Kate's announcements just before setting sail where she uses the Azipods to thrust away from the dock. She says it in a way that makes sailing with her fun. ;) Then ends it with her humorous Confucius sayings. I found her very unassuming and humble in a way but showing a lot of strength and cordiality. It was a pleasure to be on her first cruise where she took control as the Master Captain in Quebec when Capt. Leo left for vacation. BTW is she the first non Greek captain since Celebrity bought X? Orator Posted September 21, 2015 #14 Share Posted September 21, 2015 And who was the first? A quick Yahoo search did not turn up an answer One Celebrity Captain told a group that until recently there was a law that banned American Captains, male or female, from becoming Masters on Cruise Ships. He said that this was changed recently and we could expect to see more American serving as Masters. Captain Kate may very will be the first and appears to be a great choice. Yes, as opposed to the voice from above and she always ends with a saying from her favorite philospher, Confucius. One example, "Wife who put husband in dog house, will soon find him in cat house." Rare TLCOhio Posted September 21, 2015 Author #20 Share Posted September 21, 2015 "Kate McCue is . . . the first American woman to do so. Appreciate all of these various postings, experiences with Kate and clarification that it was been more recently that operating these ships is now more open to Americans holding such important posts. As I noted originally (in bold italic type), she is an American female first. Glad to see this progress by Celebrity. For our first cruise on the Solstice in June 2011 in the Med, the Hotel Director was a female and she did a great job. During our bridge tour last year, one of the top officers giving us this tour was a female. See my photo "evidence" below. Good leadership by Celebrity!! THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Did a June 7-19, 2011, cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Dozens of nice visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc. We are now at 204,232 views for this live/blog re-cap, including much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at: http://www.boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1426474 From our Solstice Bridge Tour last January going from Tasmania to New Zealand, here is one visual sample. Here are some people doing this tour in the glassed, over-hang area with the ship officer explaining what all of the many buttons, dials and knobs do to control the ship's speed, direction, etc. Plus, you can see many other screens that update all of the key navigating information, etc.:

Patrick IL. Posted September 24, 2015 #25 Share Posted September 24, 2015 Kate is an excellent choice, and very qualified. In a recent correspondence I had with Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, I commended her on the choice. Lisa was thrilled with the opportunity to place Kate in the position.
