AFTerHour Posted January 13, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Could someone guide me in the right direction on how to handle this situation... 1249 pp booked and final payment complete and now the price dropped to 1009pp NCL offered a complimentary upgrade after calling them to either AFT or Mini Suite. Has anyone negotiated beyond the upgrade? I don't feel it is an upgrade when I am content with my Balcony but the 480$ price diff for the two of us makes me feel like I was taken advantage of. If I go with the upgrade can I negotiate the remaining difference to wifi, specialty restaurant, or OBC?
buckeyefrank Posted January 13, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 13, 2016 I can understand why you feel like you were taken advantage of but that's the way it works. After final payment, a lot of times prices will drop. Obviously they do it to fill up the ship. I would personally take the upgrade to a mini-suite and be happy. At the end of the day, you booked the cruise based on a rate that you were comfortable with.

Let me ask you this: If your price had gone up $480.00 difference would you still think you were taken advantage of....or called them to pay the difference? The only suggestion I have to give you is to either take what they offer or call back and ask if you can have some OBC instead of the cabin upgrade. But remember, they don't have to offer you anything once your final payment is made. Harriet Edited January 13, 2016 by hpecorari
TheDougOut Posted January 13, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Final payment complete and past final payment date? Edit: After reading Harriet's response... do you surrender your right to rebook after you make final payment even if its prior to the final payment date? You are extremely lucky to be offered a free upgrade; you can try to negotiate for something different, but not for something more.
hpecorari Posted January 13, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Edit: After reading Harriet's response... do you surrender your right to rebook after you make final payment even if its prior to the final payment date? You can cancel and rebook if you want but once final payment has been paid you are past final payment.....therefore there is a penalty for cancelling. Unless that penalty is much less then the cost of the new cruise you book (which usually is not the case) it really does not pay! PRIOR to final payment you may rebook at the current going rate. Most people do double check prices before making their final payment. One thing to remember, however, is once you cancel in order to rebook your cabin goes back into the 'pool' and you may not get that cabin again. We just dealt with this situation the other day. We had paid off our cruise but were not past final payment. Our cruise fare dropped by about $400. I called NCL and they not only refunded my credit card the $400 they also gave me $100 OBC and I was able to keep all of my existing promotions. You may make your final payment before final payment is due. In that instance, you can do as you've done above. Harriet
beerman2 Posted January 13, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 13, 2016 If it's a true AFT balcony I would take that in a minute and be happy! You have made final payment, all part of NCL plan, and they are trying to fill ship now!
Two Wheels Only Posted January 13, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 13, 2016 ..but the 480$ price diff for the two of us makes me feel like I was taken advantage of. Nobody had to twist your arm to get you to book. The price wasn't a problem when you booked. Enjoy your cruise. Don't let the fact that some passenger in a similar stateroom paid a few hundred dollars less. I'm sure that some in a similar stateroom paid more than you did. AFTerHour Posted January 13, 2016 Author #11 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Thanks for your feedback I have stayed in a Mini suite and feel they are the same as a Balcony. I am content with my room and I don't feel the upgrade is an upgrade, but what I do see is a 20% drop.

If so, I would consider that an upgrade.

ColinIllinois Posted January 13, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Upgrade to an Aft Balcony is a nice deal. They are taking care of you. Jump on that or just forget about it and enjoy your cruise. Supply and demand: Prices go up, prices go down.

Thanks - that was the clarification I was looking for. It's useful to differentiate "paying off the cruise" from "final payment" - as you did. :)
vince_g Posted January 13, 2016 #16 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Liken it to a flight... the person next to you might have paid much less, but that's the game. I almost expect a significant drop in price right after final payment, especially noticeable is the balcony price drop on BA, probably because that is the majority of the cabins. I am sure the price you are seeing is for a balcony guarantee, which is less expensive I snagged one for a solo cruise back in November without the single supplement. Of course it dropped another $50 two days after I booked. Fortunately I got a great cabin on deck 13. Used to keep looking at prices after final payment, but I don't now - it just served to aggravate me.
mjkacmom Posted January 13, 2016 #17 Share Posted January 13, 2016 As the ship's sailing gets closer, if they need to sell cabins, they will lower prices. The passengers getting the lower fares are getting a much smaller pool of cabins to choose from than those who booked earlier. Sometimes prices go up after final payment - we always book well in advance since we need connecting cabins, and so far, prices have always been higher after final payment. You are lucky NCL is offering anything - I'd grab the aft balcony.
AFTerHour Posted January 13, 2016 Author #18 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Vince, this was not a guaranteed Balcony. I opted out of the 999$ guarantee and paid the 1249 to pick my room. Now you can pick your room for 1009 and book a guarantee for 899. To All - I will enjoy my trip without worry I just want to reach out for past experiences as I know NCL will not be reaching out to me and saying hey we want to offer you OBC. Wifi, specialty dining, or casino match - All things that will be almost no cost to them. When I hit the Powerball I will be traveling on my own ship! Rare LMaxwell Posted January 13, 2016 #20 Share Posted January 13, 2016 I too would take the aft. NCL owes nothing in this case; so if you can get "something" I'd take it.

The aft are much more expensive, so the OP shouldn't feel taken advantage of. Perhaps for one reason or another, it's just not a good location for them. Moby0215 Posted January 13, 2016 #22 Share Posted January 13, 2016 I'm surprised that they offered you anything at all as I thought I had heard they stopped the practice. After final payment it is just as likely for the price to have gone up. It is basic supply and demand and similar to how airfare works.
