Too old for Disney?

I see many good reviews on Cruise Critic about Dusney. We love kids (had three, all moved out) and love to see little ones at play. However, as young 'Boomers' without kids, are the Disney ships something we could enjoy? We love to cruise, have basically stayed with RCL but are open to options because we would like to expand the ports of call in the east coast vs. the regular spots RCL hits.

Thanks for your feedback, i look forward to reading your comments

A lot of families on Disney which means not a lot of after hour things to do most clubs close between 10 and midnight so this might be something to take into consideration. But on the plus side entertainment, service and food is second to none!!

While we have enjoyed Disney without our daughter, we are late 30's early 40's couple, we are actually looking at other lines because overall DCL doesn't hit as many different ports as other lines. We have been sailing more for the experience not the ports. We are actually looking at RCL to do some different ports. What do you look for in a cruise line? DCL isn't a party cruise, but can be enjoyable for two adults.

I'll give you entertainment, but honestly DCL standards have been slipping. Yes, food is subjective but we've found better food on several other lines. DCL service used to be the best. I don't know what it happening--lots of new CMs? changes in training or work responsibilities? In any event, it isn't what it used to be.

Lots of older adults enjoy DCL, and we certainly did on many cruises. However with the decreases in quality and increases in price, we've been looking elsewhere. We've found more adult activities as well as better food and equal or better service elsewhere. Another plus, we've found a lot more interaction with high level officers on some lines..may have been a fluke, but it was our experience.

Thanks! I will take that line off my list

Best redards

Wow ! This OP quits easily after only 1 Reply ????

We boomer adults after raising kids still enjoy DCL as a break from the other mass market lines. Adult areas and activities are well separated from family areas and events.

However , I don't understand OP wish to try other ports with DCL that RCI doesn't visit ?

DCL with only 4 ships has limited itineraries when compared to RCI ?

Castaway Cay and that's it .

We did Disney Fort Wilderness when the kids were young and it was terrific. Time changes things and based upon the responses, DCL is off our list for sure.

If we ever have grandkids we may opt for other lines as theme shows DCL ain't what it used to be . Thanks for everyone's input

It's to bad you have written Disney off without giving it a chance. I just returned from my first Disney cruise and I loved it. Granted, it was with my 2 daughters and 2 grandkids, but I found there were several 18+ areas that had I been solo, would have very much enjoyed.

I am Emerald on RCI, Platinum on both Princess and Carnival. I am so glad I did this Disney cruise and wouldn't hesitate going again if the itinerary was right for me.

I think there are some things that I will now find myself comparing when I go back to my other usual cruising lines.

I'm not sure why you even posted, since you were so quick to write it off after one response. And BTW, my daughters went to the club one night and it was going strong at 12:30 when they left.

You will notice on all the different cruise boards that those that limited their cruises to one line will be noticing cutbacks. I've noticed it on Carnival and RCI also, but it doesn't keep me from cruising. This Disney cruise was a brand new experience and it was great. I have almost 40 cruises under my belt and I like variety. I think when you stick to one thing, it gets stale. But it's a choice and I'm glad we have them.

Apparently the lack of nightlife was a deal breaker. Everyone has their priorities.

I guess it depends on what you call "night life". We've always enjoyed the late night entertainment. Yes, it's not till the "wee hours of the morning", but, if I'm going to need to be up early the next morning for an excursion, I don't want to be going to bed at dawn.

I can do it as my job never guarantees an 8 hour sleep. :D. Ready to put the wet stuff on the rec stuff at anytime so i can get going without much effort

I'm sure you'll get many various responses, but to me, Disney is geared to kids. When we were on Magic 3 years ago, DH and I were bored when our kids were in the kids club/nursery. And the entertainment is great quality but it's kids shows. Personally I'd stick with Royal or try another line.

Having sailed Disney, and loving it I think you may be surprised by how much fun you will have.

I have sailed Cunard and RCI and currently love RCI for the price.

But Disney is top of the line when it comes to shows, food and their private island......

Also love the adult only areas on board.

Give it a try...........for the cost it is worth it.

Enjoy....we did.

Safe travels

Well sounds like OP had made up their mind. You can see my experience is Disney cruises, and one of those was just my wife and I. We're going on NCL in a few months and one of the things I'm concerned I'll miss the most is the lack of an adult only outside area. Disney does a great job with this and there are whole separate sections on deck that are adult only we would grab a big pillow lounger for two and read, nap and enjoy a snack lunch. The Fantasy had a section protected from the wind with a hot tub, pool and bar area just for adults along with the whole front top level of the ship. We'll be sailing on the Jewel which from what I can only has an adult pool that's pretty much in the heart of everything.

We're not into dancing and staying up past midnight, so that didn't matter to us, but I think we'll miss the solitude.

Norwegian doesn't have an adults only section? I'm surprised. I know Royal has the Solarium area which is a separated adults only section with pool, etc.

I've only been on Norwegian Escape, and there was an adult pool area that was off limits to kids.

We cruise HAL a lot, and on that line there are so few kids, every venue feels like adults only.

HAL ships pretty much shut down by midnight. We go to the Piano Bar and when it closes, we come out to an empty casino and deserted bars.

We are boomers, just went on our first Disney cruise and would go back in a heartbeat. It was just the two of us, and we had so much fun!

We really hope to take the kids and grandkids next year, because all of us are Disney fans!

There area adult only areas on most of the NCL ships.

Yes they do have adult only areas on NCL. Someone gave them bad information.

I have been on 5 Disney cruises. All on the Dream. I just returned from a week on Celebrity Reflection. I have been on RC, Carnival, Norwegian, Princess. We have grown children and are expecting our first grandchild in April. It has been just the two of us on the cruises. We happen to love Disney cruise line. The Dream is very clean and such a happy ship, in our opinion. If you think children will bother you, then this is not the ship for you. Most of the children onboard are well behaved. The shows are very good. I must admit, I wish they would change the shows. I would love to see a new show. I'm sure it's a major production to do this. Maybe I should sail a different Disney ship and there would be different shows to see. I think one of the reasons I love Disney, is their private island. I just love being able to walk off and on the ship when we want to. One thing for sure, their cruises are more expensive.

Yes, the shows are different on the various ships, with a few shows that do play on more than one ship:

Dream - Villains Tonight; Golden Mickeys; Believe

Fantasy - Aladdin; Wishes; Believe

Wonder - Toy Story; Golden Mickeys; Dreams

Magic - Twice Charmed; Dreams; Tangled (new show)

Well I am hopeful. I had asked this specifically about the Jewel on the NCL boards and was told a few places that are generally more quiet than the rest of the ship but none that were adult only other than the pool which really isn't separated out.
