> the Captain's Table has been eliminated ...

Good.

I've never cared to have the hired help share a table with us.

Ira

Ira I'm sure the hired helps was not much interested in eating with some of the cargo either.

Have dined with the Captain, Hotel Director, Chief Engineer and the Head of HR. All were lovely experiences. Only complaint was the couple who accepted but did not participate in the conversation all evening. I have to wonder why they accepted if they weren't comfortable eating with others. I enjoy meeting new people so it was a lovely treat to dine with the officers. We were in regular cabins, not even a balcony but were invited anyway.

we enjoyed the two times we had dinner with the captain, second captain and engineer etc. we loved every minute of it from the time we met in cellar masters for a drink, to being escorted to the table by walking down the main stair case (hoping not to wipe out in my heels), to laughing at the table with new friends. the second table was great fun...had a little drinking game going on with the second captain and his wife (she was a hoot). Plus we had sailed through an earthquake that shook the entire ship so lots of interesting things to discuss.

Ps...I am an "elitist" if the definition of an "elitist" is someone who works hard, enjoys every aspect of their vacation/cruise and embraces some of the traditions of cruising (that are quickly fading).

It was fun, I would do it again and am hoping to do it again whether in MDR or elsewhere :)

It's always amusing when people who say they aren't interested in something find it necessary to tell everyone how disinterested they are;)

I always find it interesting that people who aren't interested are so insulting about those who are.

Could you elaborate?

Page one example:

No loss it was just an elitist function that excluded the majority of the passengers.

Page two

Some people have a need to feel important and I guess this captain table made them feel important.

And on it goes..

Who cares about dining with the captain? What a waste of time.

We were never invited to the Captain's table, and personally I am glad to see the end of formal nights. Perhaps it's because we're older and haven't cruised with one particular line a great deal. We don't like shlepping a ton of luggage either, as we cruise to relax and see a few islands, not to dress up.

We've always declined Captain's Table invitations, Canadian Sunset! Like you, we like to be informal on vacation.

Now that the dress code has charge you might think different. Last month when we had dinner with a Officer in Tuscan Grille. As the dress code has changed I didn't bring a dinner jacket or a long sleeve shirt. Dont get me wrong I looked very nice.

This whole thread is funny. Lots of opinions. And yes I have eaten at the captains table.

It is a funny thread. It reminds me of the movie Miss Congeniality. The main character, Gracie Lou Freebush believes that the beauty pageant represents everything that she abhors. Yet as she becomes involved in pageant as a contestant, she eventually appreciates the beauty pageant. Just an observation. :D

And I think you are both correct! It's just fun to watch! :D

  • 7 months later...

We were on Silhouette in September for a 9-night cruise out of Rome. On our first sea day we were invited to a bridge tour and Captain's lunch with all the other Royal and Penthouse suite passengers. The Captain and six other senior officers were there. It was held in Blu, which was closed to other passengers, so it was wonderfully quiet. We were sat around a large square banquet table, which made it easy to talk to the people next to you and also have the captain speak to the group. All the crew was very interesting and engaged. It was a fantastic afternoon with a special menu, including one dish prepared from the Captain's home recipe. At the end a photo was taken of the group. It was delivered to each of our suites along with a copy of the captain's recipe.

Perhaps the best part is that we bonded with the group and now had familiar faces to see in Michael's Club and Luminae. We've stayed in touch with some of the people from that lunch. It made our first cruise very memorable.

What? We've paid all that money and they expect us to eat with the crew!!!!!

We have done it many times, it's always a bonus because the officer buys the booze.

One night we declined the invitation because we had other plans. No problem.

On one Costa cruise, the Captain and his wife dined at an adjacent table to ours almost every night, so we would chat each evening. We had the best waiter service ever..........

Unless things have changed since April, I don't think the "Captain's Table" is ended. Instead it is held in a different way. On Millennium, we saw it once in Luminae, and twice in Blu.

We were invited 4 times, accepted twice because the first 2 times we were with friends and didn't want to be rude and accept and not show up for dinner!

But the two time we went were lovely and we were not in suites in fact one of the times we were in an inside! Great food, drinks and company, so glad to of done it! Dianne

The Captain's table is gone, but officers have done a bit of dining with passengers around the ship. Kind of "Captain's tables."

I must have missed the lack of the Captain's toast, either because I usually finish the sparkling wine before the toast or because they never offered rye toast.

We could do it Rocky Horror Picture Show style -

Toast: When Frank proposes a toast at dinner, members of the audience throw toast into the air (preferably unbuttered... things could get sticky).

They did same with our TA on Reflection. the Captain hosted 8 of us for a wonderful dinner in Tuscan on the 2nd or 3rd night of cruise

Yes they did this as well on the TA, where they had Captain, Staff Captain HD and department heads and about 20 passengers in a large table set up in Tuscan. From what the F&B manager told me they try and do these twice a cruise in addition to the Captains table dinner.

I know a few cruises ago one of the Hotel Directors told me they moved the Captains table out of the MDR because of space concerns. They would have this table for 8 or 10 empty in prime dining room space except for the few days it was hosted by an officer even though they had people wait listed for a seating in the MDR, so decision was made to move it to a smaller venue so it didn't impact other diners.

Although an officer's table is offered on some ships, many captains no longer wish to dine with "the cargo".. mirroring those passengers who don't want to dine with the crew.. ;)

Some Captains still offer a "Captain's Table" in a different venue such as Luminae or Tuscan, Others assign lower ranks to head the table.

We still believe this to be a wonderful time to dine with long time

Celebrity family members and are disappointed with the Captains who have deep-sixed this long time tradition.

Some masters seem to shy away from any close contact to passengers, but only on that we know is deeply involved in other forms of interaction but avoids "The Table".
