The Escape is a great ship with one major exception

I was on Getaway in June and last month. When you embark they have changed the direction you go in (since June) when you first get on the ship. They take you through an employee only area straight into the casino which I found strange cause I could smell stale smoke. Not a good first impression if it's your first time on the ship. That being said, I have allergies and I'm pretty sensitive to smoke. I grew up with both parents smoking, loosing one parent WAY too soon due to it. I had an issue sometimes walking through the casino where the tables are and at times I literally had to speed walk, hold my breathe/cover my nose going through the casino however I never had an issue on different floors on either cruise I took on the Getaway. I always felt it depended upon how many people were at the tables playing & smoking since it wasn't always bad.

Does anyone know why they have not enclosed the casino?

I know when the ship was designed the casino was going to be non smoking but its been sailing for months now as a smoking casino. This has been a ongoing complaint.

With all the architects (or what ship designers are called) and engineers you would think they could retrofit it pretty easily.

I do think the smell can depend on how many smokers you have on any specific sailing. My DS is like crazy about hating smoke and he was fine on Getaway during the day.

It might have been a bad cruise with more smoking perhaps. I went at the casino with my wife and there were a couple of occasions (we enjoy some gambling ;-)) where casino attendant told people smoking beside us that the slot machines where in a no smoke zone... to no effect.

I can certainly handle smoke in the casino but it is deplorable that the rest of the non smoking area suffer from it so much ;-(

TO no effect. Sounds about right.

I'm sorry, but its really not that bad! I've only been on the BA, so I'm basing it off of that. The comments of "it's like someone blowing second hand smoke in your face" is complete rubbish. You smell it by the casino, but in no way shape or form is it intolerable.

And no, I've never smoked cigarettes... except for that week when I was 13, but that doesn't really count.

Completely disagree.

It is bad, sometimes worse. Always that stale smoke smell, to some extent.

So much for the Escape correcting the problems of the Epic and Away ships.

To each their own... I just don't want to see people get deterred from booking due to smoke. I guess there's two camps, those who let their whole cruise get ruined by the casino blowing second hand smoke in their face all day, and those who faintly smell smoke and just want to enjoy a vacation.

It was less than a decade ago where almost every place you went allowed smoking indoors. Have we become that PC now where the faintest scent of smoke makes you want to one star review a ship? Oh well...

(and to reiterate, no, I don't smoke) Nor does anyone in my family

I would disagree it's PC, being anti-smoking is hardly PC. More like the end result of reality.

Lots of ships casino's have had that stale smell but most have doors and are enclosed and sometimes even blowers.

Often I could not smell the smoke smell unless I was right at the door or actually going through the casino.

not so on the away's.

Did not ruin my cruise but didn't make the cruise better either.

It's all a matter of opinion. I'm very sensitive to cigarette smoke. I didn't notice it. I don't smoke cigarettes, I will however smoke cigars from time to time. The only time I was offended is when I opened the door to the Humidor and saw a bunch of cigarette smokers...I was irritated.

My wife on the other hand doesn't smoke anything and is she is always the first person to raise hell when it gets offensive anywhere. She didn't notice anything either.

I'm surprised by this because I only noticed it at the casino.

I'm am an ex-smoker who now absolutely despises the smell of cigarettes. With that being said I expect to smell cigarette smoke when I go on a cruise. I just accept it as something I have to deal with. Anywhere there is a casino, there will be cigarette smoke.

Sorry to hear that it inconvenienced your trip.

Speaking of Escape, staying on topic, I would agree smoke smell worse than I expected. I also thought, WHY didn't they enclose casino? Escape casino layout is very bad for allowing smoking Inside.

We ate outside hallway at LeBistro a couple evenings, and it smelled like we were eating In the casino.

Also, there was ALOT of smokers in the casino when we were on Escape in Nov. people Not gambling, just smoking. Or a few smokers standing or sitting by, One gambler and all smoking away.....

I really hope Escape casino is cracking down on smokers that are standing or sitting around, just to smoke inside. This certainly Does contribute to the bad air quality on those floors.

As long as they're making more money allowing smoking in the casino, than not, it will be allowed. BTW, you can no longer smoke at the 5 o'clock Somewhere bar outside. Personally I have never had a big problem with it on the Epic(2), Breakaway, Getaway(2) or Escape(2). The only way it will change, is if enough folks don't book those ships anymore. But, I'll be more than glad to get cheaper fares on those ships while the boycott takes place.

I agree. The smoke permeates all 3 floors. That was the one thing that I hit the post cruise survey on pretty hard. Someone told my husband that originally the Escape was going to have a smoke free casino, but people complained, so they changed it, but it was too late to install ventilators? Anyone else heard this?

I could smell it on deck 7 midship, and deck 8 midship. I didn't smell anything at LeBistro...at all. Both my husband and I are VERY sensitive to smoke, and we don't spend time in the casino for that reason, but the huge majority of the ship was fine.

I was actually expecting it to be worse based on the reviews, but was pleasantly surprised that except for the times we were actually walking through the casino, it didn't really bother me.

the reason the casino is filled with people smoking, is because there is only one place on that huge ship that allows smoking. it is at the back of ship in h20. A very small section that maybe held about 20-30 people. there is no smoking anywhere else on the ship, except for the cigar lounge. smoke does not bother me, but the casino area was truly the worst. not sure how anybody could enjoy their dinner at any of the specialty restaurants that are near the casino. why would they not allow smoking on one of the outside decks. possibly deck 8 on the waterfront. by limiting smoking in any areas, it forces people to go to the casino.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am a smoker. I specifically was told when I booked that I can smoke on the waterfront (not near dining) when they took my money. I also paid extra for a balcony on deck 9 because I have vertigo and going to higher levels to have a cig is not something I can do nor want to do. So reading my book, having a coffee and a cigarette on deck 8 worked perfect for me. This is my lifestyle, my choice...heck, I dont even drink...just my darn coffee, a cig, and read my book looking over the water...gez, sorry to bother all you "non smokers"......

anyways......I just spoke to management...

they said only smoking on deck 17 H2O and waves bar I believe, casino and inside Humidor. Really? thats not what I was told when they took my money. I asked if I can cancel and or switch ships...they now said its a fee. Well, I paid extra for a specific room to suit my needs. I also had a carnival room on hold as well while I clearly asked the representative can I smoke on the waterfront. You cannot tell someone something....and do another. I would have clearly have stayed with Carnival or made my choice if I wanted to cruise another line. This is very deceptive. The most ludicrous thing is that now smokers that cannot smoke outside on lower decks will smell up the casino....that does not make sense...sure I will play a penny slot at least amount as possible so I can have my smoke (you don't think Im going to wait by the elevator all day so I can go up to deck 17 do you?)

...but god forbid I here 1 more person complain how smelly the casino is because I am not allowed to smoke outside when I was clearly told I could so do on deck 8. Not my fault...I would have gladly booked another ship. Hey, I respect the next guy...I really do... Some of my friends who smoke are the most considerate people I know :)

hey, now how's about those deck chair hogs...lets see some of those rules enforced. I dont even attempt to get a lounge chair anymore cuz I am not ignorant to that fact. In fact, I am not ignorant period. This is why I called NCL prior to my booking about the smoking areas.

Wow, that is a nice little vent . Research can do wonders. Only 2 posts on CC, had you checked some other threads you would have known that NCL reps are often wrong on what actually goes on onboard.

It's not really in your best interest to believe them, as sad/bad as that seems.

Case in point most knew b/4 the NCL reps that the sail time on Escape was changed.

Smoke does linger and drift even in open air and yes as a non- smoker it does bother me! However I have NO CHOICE but to smell it.
