The Escape is a great ship with one major exception

Exactly!! Since I can be made ill by your lifestyle choice, I am not feeling sorry for you.

I guess you and other non smokers have not followed recent news as well as the Dr Oz special programs about how non smokers have a huge risk for lung cancer by eating certain carbohydrates even without ever inhaling smoke in their lifetime.

hey, now how's about those deck chair hogs...lets see some of those rules enforced. I dont even attempt to get a lounge chair anymore cuz I am not ignorant to that fact.

Chair hogs do not stink up people's clothes and hair. But anyway, NCL lied when one of the execs stated that a dividing wall would be installed in the casino.

This scares me because my son and I are very sensitive to the smell of smoke and it causes us to get sick and our asthma flares up. We have been on 4 NCL cruises on the Pearl and Sun and have never had a problem. We booked the Escape for next spring and I'm thinking maybe we should try the Jade instead :(

So....are you claiming that 2nd hand smoke has no danger at all?

Claiming that "Well, other things are dangerous so smoking doesn't hurt non-smokers...." is asinine.

People can choose what to eat (high glycemic index or not) but they can't choose what to breathe,

I am very sensitive to smoke, too. But, I didn't have any problems with the smoke smell on the Getaway when we sailed in June 2014. We actually have another cruised booked this year. I hope the smoking issue hasn't gotten worse since the ship is older. I despise the smell of stale smoke.

Yes that is EXACTLY how I feel about the non smokers who complain about smokers having 8% of the ship.

To be fair, it's 8% that is hard to avoid if you want to go to certain restaurants or oh walk through the atrium.

People gonna smoke. I smoked at one time. I get the lure/need/etc. I'd just prefer not to smell it or smell like it.

Well the non smokers have 92% of the ship to smell clean air why do they need to complain about the 8%?

I think you are missing the point. The smoke is drifting into areas that is supposed to be non-smoking. I would expect a smoking area to smell like smoke. I would expect it in the casino. I would expect it in the humidor. I would not and am not complaining about those areas. Do I wish the casino was smoke-free? Sure! But it isn't so, no complaints. I deal.

I would not, however, expect it in areas that are designated non-smoking such as the atrium and outside of Le Bistro.

At least for me, that is the complaint. Smoke is drifting into areas that it should not. Very public areas...the "heart" of the ship if you will.

This is an error on NCL's part for not following through with earlier promises and putting in a better ventilation system.

I'm not going to judge a person for smoking. I would hope they would not judge me, in kind, for wanting non-smoking areas to not smell like smoke.

Tell that to the Car/SUV owners, or the bus drivers, or the motorcycle riders, or the 18 wheeler drivers.

I don't drive but I breathe in their crap everyday.

I am soooooooooooooooooooooo glad I have/had no interest in this ship

You're missing out. We are on our second Escape cruise next moth. Didn't have any problem with smoke on our first time on the Escape. Been on the BA and GA two times each and had no problems there.

I was on the Escape last week. I have also been on the Getaway and the Epic same time of year during the last three years. Fair disclosure- I do like to have a cigarette every once and awhile when I am drinking. I am not a full time smoker and on this cruise I did bring a pack of cigarettes. I came home with over a half pack left. I smoked outside in the designated area late at night because I thought the smoking area in the casino was stuffy and more smoky than usual. It seemed mostly confined to the casino area on deck 7. I really could not smell it in the Skyline bar though. Always a lot of Canadians at this time of year (personally don't think they smoke more than anyone else) due to it being their spring break. I did smell the lingering's of smoke as soon as we boarded, but it was not overwhelming. I think the level of smoke depends on the night and it's mostly at night, later in the night, that it was bad. More people in the casino smoking on nights when there was no port stop the next day. You have to remember also that we had an extra day at sea due to not stopping in Nassau, so more people in the casino. I was on the ship with my sister and we both thought we would not want to have to walk our kids through that area at night as the smoke was a lot to pass through. I felt that the smoke smell on this particular voyage was more than usual. We actually decided not to dine in Le Bistro because of it, but again that was on a night where there was no port stop the next day and we did not want to chance being seated outside of the restaurant. My sister does not smoke and doesn't like the smell at all. After playing a slot game she complained that her hair smelled of smoke and didn't want to play anymore after that. There are ways to get where you need to go without walking through the casino on the nights the smoke is bad. It's a slight inconvenience to go up and then down a level or visa versa, but it can be done. I think last week was just a bit more smokers than usual, plus the extra sea day didn't help. People were at the casino looking for something to do.

  • 2 months later...

Sorry to be dragging up an old thread, but it was the closest one that I could find for my question.

My wife and I will be on Escape at the end of the month. We are older cruisers and while we enjoy the excitement of a cruise, we like to get away from the kiddies, too. On our last cruise our favorite hangout was at the bar in the adult only pool area. I kind of expected that the Spice H2O bar would be a usual spot for us on Escape. Then I read in another thread that that area is a smoking area. If that is the case, we won't be hanging out there. Next, I read that the Upper Pool Bar is a smoking area. Dang!

So, here's the question. What outdoor bar can we frequent that doesn't allow smoking? Am I going to have to make the mad dash for Vibe to get a kid-free, smoke-free spot?

Thanks

Do you desire to be with the masses on the upper decks? If so, maybe try the lower waves pool bar or the bar at Margaritaville. If not, take a look at the outdoor bar area on deck 8... outside the 5 o'clock somewhere bar - often a nice spot.

I suggest either the 5 O'clock Somewhere bar, or the outdoor wine cellar. Both are nice, smoke free areas.

Well, I was kind of hoping for something a little higher up and more open, but the Waterfront is definitely on our list of places to check out. So, these might work. Thanks.

Darn..

I was hoping that NCL had a better handle of the smoking issue. Seems like the same issues with the casino are still prevalent on Escape. I don't bash the smokers, they need a place to light up. I just wish it was not in an indoor space that non smokers want to frequent.

Just off the Escape and there was basically no smoke smell in 6-7-8. I was so surprised. Others in my party said they didn't even realize there was smoking indoors anywhere. We are all non-smokers. The only place we noticed smoke smell was the upstairs pool bar. I guess it can vary cruise to cruise.

If it is as bad as everyone is reporting on the Escape we may just have dinner brought to our cabin in the Haven instead of going to the restaurant. Can't stand to be around cigarette smoke and my wife has asthma.
