Live from Oasis Not Impressed

Recommended Posts

First impressions: way too crowded. Bar tenders not friendly despite extra tips and compliments on well made drinks. Cabin is the smallest balcony we have ever had. Closet and storage space minuscule. Diamond welcome gift is a plastic bag of nuts. Nothing other than a shampoo dispenser in the bath and no robes. No ice bucket and "cooler" (fridge) too small to store a wine bottle. Walls are paper thin and neighbors are LOUD. Kids running everywhere and banging on our door.

We're determined to have a good time anyway.

Just the facts, you decide. [emoji848]

We were on Allure a few years ago.....and only on embarkation day, especially around Muster Drill and the initial arrival at MDR did it seem crowded. On the first evening when everyone needs someone to escort them to their table, that just adds time to the flow to get into the MDR. After the first night, when you know where your table is, the flow is easier and less crowded going into dinner. After the first few hours, the rest of the cruise rarely seemed crowded, except at Karoake, which clearly was a favorite attraction for many.

The cabin we had on Allure was a CP balcony. I found the shelving arrangement and the dresser storage inadequate....but we managed. I have heard the new Harmony, has cabins with much better furniture arrangement and storage setup....more like Anthem cabins.

If our robes are not in our cabin, we just remind the cabin attendant that we should have them....and viola, they appear. The Diamond gift has changed alot, but it is meaningless to us....there are plenty of cookies around the ship to make me happy. Our cabins have always had complimentary water bottles from the time we were Diamond, never an issue.

If I wanted bathroom item, I just politely asked and again viola....it appeared. The cooler is large enough to hold wine bottles -- ours always does....not sure why yours would not. As far as ice -- just ask....for a bucket and to have it kept full....we do just that and twice a day, it is kept full and wine glasses provided as well.

We had an outstanding time on Allure. None of these issues are big enough to compromise a cruise. NONE.

Can't hold the cruise line accountable for the behavior of some of the children (large or small) onboard with you.

Quick update, we're busy enjoying our cruise. OV balcony deck 12. Smallest of this category ever experienced. Storage space limited in room, closet and bath. We realized too late that this is a holiday week for schools so that's my bad for booking during this time.

Our first impression is the crowds are overwhelming and the personal touch is missing. We know to ask our attendant for the missing items but still haven't seen a single one anywhere near our cabin or on our deck. Just reporting our experience so far.

BTW, Izumi hibachi will be included in our 3 dinner package using a $30.00 credit pp. someone here said it wasn't., so that's a plus. Also the ship itself and public rooms are amazing. I'm sure the suites have better amenities and are roomier than a standard OV balcony. Maybe some day well spring a suite at 3 times what we paid for this. [emoji6]

We are older and have been cruising for decades.

In times gone bye, when everything was included, all categorizes had it a bit better.

We started with port holes & worked our way up to windows. Now at least a mini suite.

Our September Oasis will be in a grand suite. I even remember when Labadee did not have a 'fence' to separate the best beach for the suites.

Seems most cruise lines are now upping amenities for suites & lowering them for the other cabins.

It is like the airlines. I was shocked the first time we flew a red eye cross country & were not provided with a blanket or pillow.

Some people do not care about their cabin on a ship because they say they are not in it that much. I CARE. I want good amenities...that also extends to the towels & bedding you get. On Oasis it also extends to private dining & automatic show reservations

That is one reason why it is hard to go off of reviews. My review from a suite will be totally different from your review.

We always search the Internet for the best deal. Even if the price is the same, the agency might include onboard credit & prepaid tips.

At this point in my life...if I cannot afford a suite...I would rather not go !

Have to agree on the crowding issues on Oasis-class. Of 10 RCCL cruises across Soverign-, Voyager-, Freedom- and Oasis-class ships, our two Oasis class cruises were by far the most crowded. Good cruises -- just very crowded.

Funny- I've found that of the Radiance, Freedom, and Oasis classes, the Oasis class were the least crowded.

We always take everything - including the shelves - out of the cooler to put our wine inside. As others have said, ask for ice and they will bring it twice daily. I always ask for wine glasses too.

Last cruise our room steward noticed we had a bottle of white wine when we first embarked and he brought us a bucket to keep it in along with glasses.

We do the best we can to get the best price we can for the cruise we want....and there are some things we don't want....we don't want an inside cabin. We prefer a balcony, and have treated ourselves to a JS once.

I am not so taken by 'private dining' or automatic show reservations, or having a butler to attend to my needs.....if we can get some extra perks from a TA for our business that is nice .......but I won't ever say, the only way I will cruise is in a suite.....seems like, I would be missing out on a few adventures if I was that closed minded. JMO.

Well, that's great for you! Kind of Snippy, Shippy.

By starting with saying we were older.....I could have added getting crippled by arthritis & many surgeries. So extra space & amenities are an appreciated commodity.

It is amazing how things in your life that were not important change when you age....and also just the opposite....things that used to seem important, I could care less about now.

I know my cruising days will end in the near future. My choice is not to travel when confined to a wheelchair or scooter although lots of folks do.

Not snippy IMHO.

We were on Oasis 3 weeks ago and followed a week on Oasis with 8 days on Navigator. I was really surprised that I enjoyed Oasis more. Navigator had been my favorite ship prior to that cruise. Love the Diamond Lounge on her. We had the same issue with no robes or toiletries the first day on both cruises. The steward took care of it on both ship when asked. Ice there daily after we asked. Red wine here so no need to put wine in the frig. Only thing that put me off on both cruises was the dogs on Navigator. We were in CHops and the table next to us had a dog in the ladies lap eating from the table. Dog was in clothes and a diaper. A small dog, but sure made me wonder if a dog had previously been at our table and how well it was cleaned. The dog was in the CL and DL and just negatively affected our experience ad many others. Then there was a loose dog on the promenade in the cafe just running around licking folks. Next time we saw it the same dog was in a ladies lap at the table. THis was a basset hound size dog. I love my pets, but I don't love cruising with other folks pets and I sure don't think they should be at the tables or loose. I know, I know before you jump on me re service dogs. These dogs did not act trained as service dogs.

We are retired Baby Boomers, have moved up from portholes to OV or balconies, have sailed in an aft corner suite once and an inside once in approx. 35 cruises

over several decades. If we had the opportunity to sail in any cabin at a greatly reduced rate, we would jump on it including all our aches and pains.

We may not be as wealthy as you , but as Paulette said, we are able to cruise more because we budget........and snow bird in Myrtle Beach.

Enjoy your suites:)

..... Find out what cabin the kids are in and bang on their door. Enjoy

Love this comment. Let the parents know if they don't stop you will be banging on theirs in the middle of the night. Actually, I would get guest services/security involved first. They have the cameras so they can see where they come from or go to. I am sure security will take care of it. If it doesn't stop then have fun with banging on their door. :D

The one thing I kept saying on my sold out, full capacity sailing (4/23) is how this ship doesn't feel crowded and all through the cruise I kept saying "I can't believe how it doesn't feel crowded " and I've been on plenty of crowded ships (Breakaway)

Does RCCL allow non-service dogs on their ships? I love animals but don't want to have dinner next to a dog on someone's lap.

No they don't, but service dogs can be for "depression" or anxity dissorters

No cruise line is allowed to ask what the handicap is. The dog will have "papers"

proving it is a service dog.

it seems like you are in the minority. I have read so many comments on how un crowded people find oasis class ships. Myself included.

Were you on the 4/23 sailing? I saw a small white dog at the buffet sitting at the table.

Although some people may not understand your point of view, I certainly do. My DH and I are older, and DH now uses a wheelchair. An accessible suite allows him to access the suites lounge, which is an enjoyment for him. The larger accessible suite also enhances his feeling of independence. Oasis and Allure have accessible suites, however, the newer ships have only Sea class accessible rooms, no concierge-level accessible suites. Sigh...

First impressions: way too crowded.

If the weather isn't too nice out it can be crowded

Bar tenders not friendly despite extra tips and compliments on well made drinks.

Pick another bar

Cabin is the smallest balcony we have ever had.

Did you research so it wasn't a surprise? Also, they aren't that compared with others

small closet and storage space minuscule.

We managed. You will too

Diamond welcome gift is a plastic bag of nuts.

Yup, agreed. I'd rather have a welcome cocktail coupon

Nothing other than a shampoo dispenser in the bath and no robes.

Ask for robes!!!

No ice bucket and "cooler" (fridge) too small to store a wine bottle.

Ask for ice! Easy. I don't ever remember a fridge on any cruise that would store an upright wine bottle

Walls are paper thin and neighbors are LOUD.

It's not the walls. Your neighbors are loud

Kids running everywhere and banging on our door.

Is that the cruiseline's fault?

We're determined to have a good time anyway.

Hope so

You have responded in a wonderful manner. I read the OP's post and decided not to respond at all for fear of saying what I really feel....K.O....For the record 5 times on Oasis hated it!.....;););)....K.O.

We really enjoyed everything the Oasis had to offer and never felt crowded. Granted we sailed in an off week, but once the boarding day chaos dissipated we never thought the ship was crowded...in fact, we wondered where all the people were!

I agree, the balcony cabins are small and made even smaller by the inadequate storage. We thought the storage in a Celebrity S-Class balcony was pathetic, but the Oasis storage is even worse!

As for the loud children, if they're in the cabin next door please don't let it get out of control. If a neighborly request doesn't work, get GS involved. Once they've behaved that way without being redirected it will be very hard to stop.

I hope the annoyances don't get in the way of enjoying what is an INCREDIBLE ship!

I laughed about the small balcony. Before we sailed on Royal Princess all I read about was how small the balconies are. They really are! There is barely room fit two chairs and you walk too fast out the door you'll hit the rail. We still enjoyed the balcony and loved the ship.

Re storage space on Oasis, there should be shelves behind the mirrors unless I'm mixing up my cruise lines. We are sailing on Oasis again, and I'll bring my usual pharmacy, chargers, too many shoes, umbrella, empty Ziploc bags, crackers, Crystal Light, ear plugs, toiletries, and whatever else jumps into my suitcase. And I'll find a place for all of it!

Paulette...not judging ANYONE....BUT....you state you don't want an "inside" cabin. How is that different than the gentleman stating he will only cruise in a suite???? This is what he wants and NO ONE should judge or begrudge what he wants. JMO....:)

I don't want an inside cabin, simply because the magic of a cruise is looking out to see the ocean....if that be a window, off of a balcony or deck.

I wasn't judging him.....and if you read it that way, he brought on any judgements to be made when he said, "if I cannot afford a suite, I would rather no go'. I don't begrudge anyone their ability to afford a suite.

I firmly believe that those that choose to sail in a suite should receive more perks, considering the cost of those suites. For those that need the space a suite gives them, they have their justification, just like I have my justification for NEVER wanting to cruise in an inside cabin. I won't do it to save a few dollars, I will just wait a few more months to save the money I need to have a window, or balcony.
