Swampduck Posted July 2, 2016 #26 Share Posted July 2, 2016 Agreed. It continues to baffle me how much people on here gossip and complain about what others do that has zero impact to them. What somebody else wears or whether someone else sends a text message (assuming the phone is on silent) is none of my business and would never impact my cruise- or dining experience. Now - people talking loudly on a cell phone or a screaming baby that the parents don't carry out - those complaints I would understand. Exactly! Surely what other do does not impact on you! Spend your time conversing & getting to know those at your table and forget about those at other tables! Live and let live.
keithm Posted July 2, 2016 #27 Share Posted July 2, 2016 Ignoring the fact that they are unfortunately illegal in the US and probably also on ships, we could all go out and buy cell phone jammers - http://cellphone-jammers.com/ They are not too expensive. DON A guy did that recently. It jammed a lot of phones(and ambulances as well)This guy paid for a really expensive jammer. Eventually the police began to follow the jamming & caught the guy. A friend has a full semi truck air horn in his Camry. He "toots" people he sees texting(doesn't bother those on cell phones)

keithm Posted July 2, 2016 #29 Share Posted July 2, 2016 My phone stays in my cabin for the entire cruise. Call me nuts:rolleyes::eek:I have no desire take it anywhere with me when I am cruising. I know I am in the minority but I don't care. It's what I do as well. If I need info. I buy the internet package & check my e-mails. I mean if the world ends, I'm sure I'll find out about it somehow! cheeseheads4ever Posted July 2, 2016 #30 Share Posted July 2, 2016 For us our cells phones are in the room never to be seen again till we are walking off the ship. I agree on one hand I could care less what people wear, eat etc. but we had a lady in one of the upscale restaurants on the ship sitting in a booth by us that was obnoxious on cell phone not paying attention to waiter and drink staff and just plain rude to others around. Finally restaurant staff told her to cool it. I'm not sure why you have to have the phone hooked to your ear. We have a rule no cell phones at dinner table. Take a breather and let it rest for a while. Enjoy other company and actually partake in a conversation. Just me sorry. I mind my own business until Others rudeness effects me. mcphreek Posted July 2, 2016 #32 Share Posted July 2, 2016 I am a restaurant manager and I could care less if you spend the entire meal on your phone. Watching videos with the volume up, however, is disruptive to other guests and should not be tolerated.

Hydrokitty Posted July 2, 2016 #35 Share Posted July 2, 2016 Why is it bad manners if someone sends a text on their cell phone? Why would it bother you? It isn't....what's bad manners is if you're sitting at a table with 5 other people at the dinner table, having one would hope pleasant conversation, and one person is texting to someone else on their cel phone. When you're at a friend's house for dinner or a family occasion would you sit at the table and text people who aren't there? If you can sincerely and honestly answer "Yes, I would and none of them would mind"...then text away....personally, I would be a little offended but I won't complain about you texting if you don't complain about me complaining! :D

Ma Bell Posted July 3, 2016 #37 Share Posted July 3, 2016 I find it strange that someone could be so self-absorbed that nothing outside of his 3 feet of personal space has any affect on that person. It seems that attitude is prevalent today more than ever and I find that very sad. Unfortunately we better look up and pay attention to what's going on around us or it might be too late when we finally do. Sometimes the real world has a way of unpleasantly intruding on our "virtual reality".
rvmike Posted July 3, 2016 #38 Share Posted July 3, 2016 If someone is texting, ok. On my last cruise we had a couple that would not put them down and constantly chatting on the phone. I started to chew my food with my mouth open and would burp after every swallow of water. They only showed up that one time. Problem solved

Hopefully, you did not have other tablemates to witness your open mouth chewing and burping. Instead of acting slovenly, why not just have your table changed right away? Norcal Cruiser Posted July 3, 2016 Author #40 Share Posted July 3, 2016 OP here I felt my original post was mild and non judgemental despite getting called that a few times. To clarify we did see tables where non family groups were sitting together and ignoring the other people seated with them. We also observed numerous occasions of a finger held up to the wait staff so they could finish their text. We hadn't experienced that before and we are pretty experienced cruisers .Just offered my opinion sorry if I hit a nerve with anyone. We had a great cruise can't wait for the next one in Feb. And I hope the few people who called me judgemental are not at our table!
rvmike Posted July 3, 2016 #41 Share Posted July 3, 2016 Sandtrap, We had a group of 5 and several people asked them to put them away, I solved the problem. Would you ask a child to be charming if they acted that way at your table? Maybe you should ask for a table for 2 if you are that Holy
gek Posted July 3, 2016 #42 Share Posted July 3, 2016 (edited) Some people treat their phones as an extension of their ego and feel compelled to stroke them constantly. Others are just not good socialisers and use them as a way to escape an uncomfortable situation. Others, like the OP just like to make an observation which probably referred mainly to people in the first category. Then of course there are those who get annoyed by something happening at another table which is probably none of their business. florisdekort Posted July 3, 2016 #43 Share Posted July 3, 2016 Bad manners is talking loudly on a cell phone, disturbing those around you. Bad manners is not having your phone on silent so everyone has to hear it beep every time a text message comes in. Bad manners is not removing a screaming toddler from the dining room promptly. However - bad manners is also being judgmental about what a family chooses to do at their own private dining table. If they chose to let their kids watch video and/or send text messages (assuming their phones are on silent), it's none of your business and not impacting your dining experience. Perhaps focus on your own table mates and have a pleasant conversation with them as opposed to watching others and gossiping about them?
kerryincork Posted July 3, 2016 #44 Share Posted July 3, 2016 When my niece was younger we would give her my pad with videos on. She just didn't have the patients to sit through a whole dinner without fussing, she's 4 now and better, so we rarely have to resort to videos now unless the dinner is really long. DirtyDawg Posted July 3, 2016 #45 Share Posted July 3, 2016 We were on the Solstice May 27th Alaska cruise and observed something we hadn't seen before. Several tables near us had many cell phones out texting and watching videos while ordering and even when eating. My opinion only but I think this is so rude to the dining staff and your fellow diners. Hopefully not the new norm. I have no problem with people snapping quick pics of the food but these phones were out and being used the entire dinner. We had a good cruise but this was unsettling. Perhaps they were on CC commenting on the horrific attire of their fellow diners in the MDR. ;)
Tommy3putts Posted July 3, 2016 #46 Share Posted July 3, 2016 (edited) I really like this thread. It's not specifically a dress code thread but feels just as fun. There are the people who pretend that what others do on a cruise has no effect on them(One topless woman patron in the MDR would disprove this thought) and others that purport to be effected by a fruit fly at 60 paces. This thing has gone to the point that Joanie is kicking *** and taking no names. Some pretend that discourtesy is not an issue and others that think that it is the end of the world as we know it. Modern Luxury and Elegantly Chic this is not but it is probably the future of cruising as we know it. Enjoy Cruising. Andy, We are down to two days, two hours. Ha! Another MDR hot topic! Finally! [emoji897][emoji897][emoji897] My .02. (Okay I'll bite). Smartphones, bad or good, are multifunctional devices/computers. Cameras, email, text, games, health, video, and yes phone. So someone taking a picture at dinner would be far different than someone on FaceTime chat with their pet sitter checking on Fido. Someone watching Independence Day 2 on full blast in the MDR could reasonably be considered as inconsiderate and might annoy even me. Me? I admit it I'm connected to my iPhone, but I also realize dinner is not a great place to whip it out. Just don't ask me what the football score is. Hydrokitty Posted July 3, 2016 #48 Share Posted July 3, 2016 (edited) I don't own a phone and I don't own a car. I'm better off without I I used to think that way about the phone until I had an accident and had to crawl to my car to get my phone to dial 911! I don't leave home without it, but I'm not glued to it either. Unfortunately I live in an area where having a car is a necessity. Je Souhaite Posted July 3, 2016 #50 Share Posted July 3, 2016 I do like the idea of texting the help my requirements for the day or night right from my table. I'll have to get their numbers. I also find it helpful to catch up on the latest episode of OITNB. 2 phones to make it stereo. Those earbuds are painful. Thanks for the free WiFi packages!
