Freedom of the Seas Secrets

Recommended Posts

True Southerner here. The grits are good, but my youngest, a real grit lover, was dismayed when she took a monster-sized bite and realized they contained no salt and no butter. At home I put butter and salt into the pot, and she didn't realize the ship did not.

With no salt or butter while cooking grits and they come out lumpy. It's like cooking pasta without salt and some oil in the pot.

I'm pretty sure...but...the eggs are served in 2 places..the regular buffet...skip them and go directly to the harbor . I have found scrambled eggs at the buffet..MEH..

You are correct. The Windjammer buffet area has scrambled and hard boiled eggs. Egg Harbor in the Windjammer is where you can have custom eggs/omlets cooked for you, and the dining room also serves eggs:D

Southerner here, born and bred. The grits on FOS are not that good. Carnival has better grits. Grits are much better cooked with a little milk, and you have to add the butter and salt. That may just be how they're cooked in NC, but that's how I grew up eating them. They should not have lumps.

My tip: you can shower in the spa at no cost; the showers in the cabins are very tight.

Does the pub have a cover charge?

Thank you

We think the best place to sit/see the 70's Party is in front of the pub on the promenade. (If you're still interested in attending, as some repeat cruisers skip this event) Also a good place to watch the parade is in this area too.

I've read that the Crypt nightclub has been replaced with cabins and a Mexican style restaurant??? Is this true? And if so- where is the nightclub entertainment?

I don't think so........Just you, as far as I know.

Maybe it was Laura and Gene. One of our old crew took their grandkid in 2015 the same year I was last on her. Another secret, you don't have to be 18 to buy cigarettes on Freedom, they consider it Candy.

There is also a secret deck 10.5, this is the entrance.

Grits on RCL are wonderful!! CCL also serves a great bowl of grits.

It's amazing how people that have never TASTED grits have come to decide they are not a "grits" person. What's even more amazing the number of people that LOVE polenta but can't stand grits. Just a hoot to hear them comment.

Being in the south...we have grits all the time and LOVE them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nothing is better than a plate of shrimp and grits, ala Paul Prudhomme, Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer served with a loaf of crusty bread! Bon Appétit!

Grew up in Georgia. Love lots of Southern dishes - hush puppies, sweet tea and esp. boiled peanuts for example. Cannot stand grits. They have no flavor other than what you add to them. Better to take the corn meal, fry it and make hush puppies from it.

  • 2 weeks later...

We just got off. A secret I learned for people in the interior cabins in the middle of the ship (son had 8449) was to use the emergency exit doors in the back corner of the internet cafe (or equivalent area depending on the floor) as a shortcut. Otherwise, you have to go all the way down and back up the halls.

We signed up for Sabor for lunch when we got on board. It was $19, but included a free margarita. Definitely worth going. It was our favorite meal.

If you ask your waiter the night before, they can bring a plate of spring rolls to the table for the next night. They were delicious.

The waiter said that they were supposed to get the new menus on Wed. Sept. 7, but they changed the date to Sept. 14th.

The homemade crepes, bananas foster station was in the windjammer the last night for dinner. They were delicious.

Also, I don't know if this will work everytime, but we walked off early with luggage. My parents got in line early for the back exit and were near the front of the line which went all the way to the casino by the time we got down. They opened another line for the front exit and we were off the ship a full fifteen minutes before they even started letting the other line get off.

I just read this on my Roll Call for my upcoming Freedom cruise, but don't know how "true" it is since its second hand information- but here goes:

"....you can order guacamole at the Schooner bar during the hours that Sabor is open, and they'll bring it to you without you having to pay the cover charge for Sabor"

I will be trying this out in November and I hope it's true!:D:D:D

I didn't think that Sabor had a cover charge - you just paid ala carte? At least that is how it was on the Oasis.

The guacamole was delicious, and I am usually not a guacamole fan!

Navigator and Freedom are fixed cover charge. Oasis and Allure are a la carte.

That explains it! I have not yet been on either ship, although Freedom is in our plans for next year. I am assuming Harmony will be ala carte like the other Oasis class ships when we board her next month. Thanks!

I'd gladly pay ala carte for Sabor if the Freedom had a Park Cafe....it's been a while for a ship with the Park Cafe for us and my husband is addicted to the prime rib Kemmelwick sandwiches! YUM!
