VermeulT Posted December 24, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 24, 2016 Being from Dutch heritage, I've always loved the little things that I would get on HAL that brought back fond memories. What if any things are still left now on HAL ships? Besides the raisin buns, which I love... bitterballen? etc? Thanks.
headhunterke Posted December 24, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 24, 2016 Last time I was onboard, it was Sinterklaas and my cabin steward brought a plate of pepernoot, a typical dutch candy. I haven't seen bitterballen or anything similar, though.
freestyling Posted December 24, 2016 #3 Share Posted December 24, 2016 On the Koningsdam there is a Dutch Cafe with various Dutch treats such as bittenballen etc.
headhunterke Posted December 24, 2016 #4 Share Posted December 24, 2016 Is this an exclusive on the Koningsdam? Or is it being rolled out on other ships as well?
RMLincoln Posted December 24, 2016 #5 Share Posted December 24, 2016 On Amsterdam there was a small counter with Dutch breakfast every day - cheese, smoked and marinated fish, rolls and brown bread, a box of chocolate shavings... a few other things I can't recall but I enjoyed it many days. So did the ship's officers, for whom it was probably designed for. Plus there was Royal Dutch Tea one afternoon with lots of goodies I didn't know the names of. m--
Krazy Kruizers Posted December 24, 2016 #6 Share Posted December 24, 2016 There was a time when HAL had one evening dinner devoted to Dutch foods. And the ladies had a white Dutch hat and the men had black Dutch hat waiting for them at the table. Many of us at the end of the cruise received special Dutch hats all decorated with our names on them as well as the name(s) of the crew members who gave them to us. Also on that evening in the bars/lounges, for appetizers they served Gouda cheese. Now you may see one Dutch entrée, a dessert and there have been times when the bitterballen was served in the bars before dinner. It all depends on the ship. GradUT Posted December 24, 2016 #7 Share Posted December 24, 2016 One of the afternoon teas on the ship is the Royal Dutch Tea, so I can only imagine there are some Dutch treats offered then.
QueenGlassHalfFull Posted December 24, 2016 #8 Share Posted December 24, 2016 (edited) We had lots of Dutch food when we sailed on the Rotterdam from Rotterdam. The bitterballen were divine. We also had a Dutch buffet for lunch (with bitterballen for dessert) on several other cruises in various locations. I have to say though that the vast majority of our HAL cruises have had little to no Dutch food served. On our very first cruise, which was on Westerdam, when we got to the dining room that evening we thought all the women had their napkins on their heads. We didn't know what was going on. Ineke Posted December 24, 2016 #10 Share Posted December 24, 2016 We were on the Oosterdam Nov. 25 - Dec. 9. After the first few days we found the raisin buns, and then the next day there were beschuiten. And DH had his jenever nightcap every evening. Also, our dining room stewards found extra Oud Amsterdam cheese for him every evening. And that was it. We never saw a pepernoot (even though they apparently were given to all the guests), bitterballen, croquettes, rijsttafel, muisjes, etc. We REALLY miss the croquettes from the burger bar, they were the best! KAKcruiser Posted December 24, 2016 #11 Share Posted December 24, 2016 We were recently on the Rotterdam for 10 days and were surprised that there was no Royal Dutch Tea in the afternoon or Indonesia buffet in the lido. There also was no suite luncheon or VIP party.
summersigh Posted December 24, 2016 #12 Share Posted December 24, 2016 (edited) Just off the Zuiderdam. Daily Tea was mainly like British afternoon tea with crustless sandwiches, small fancy, decorated pastries, and scones with jam and whipped cream :) After the first couple of days it filled the entire Ocean Bar to overflowing each afternoon. Jade13 Posted December 24, 2016 #13 Share Posted December 24, 2016 One of the afternoon teas on the ship is the Royal Dutch Tea, so I can only imagine there are some Dutch treats offered then. As far as I know they have gotten rid of this event, at least on my last two cruises on Maasdam and Koningsdam. It was disappointing. If you go on the Prinsendam, they serve for lunch frikadellen en kroketten en met het ontbijt hebben ze ook rolmops en soms leverwost, en gekookte worst

Alberta Quilter Posted December 24, 2016 #16 Share Posted December 24, 2016 We had the Royal Dutch Tea on the Westerdam in Oct/16. As for Dutch treats, no bitterballen but I did see stroopwafels in the Explorations Cafe.
VermeulT Posted December 24, 2016 Author #17 Share Posted December 24, 2016 Does anyone think there will be oliebollen for New Year's Eve?
Rare Alphen Posted December 25, 2016 #18 Share Posted December 25, 2016 Does anyone think there will be oliebollen for New Year's Eve? There will be olliebollen, for other Dutch treats, it is always depending on the amount of Dutch guests on board.
