Good proposing marriage spots in the Mediterranean

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone...I am going on my first ever cruise to the Mediterranean, a 12 nighter aboard Brilliance in October and following up that cruise with the 14 night Transatlantic back to the states.

We leave from Barcelona and make stops in Monte Carlo, Florence and Rome Italy, Athens Greece, Ephesus Turkey, Santorini Greece and Valetta Malta.

I want to propose marriage to my girl on this cruise and was trying to figure out the best spot and country to do so.

Her birthday is the day we are in Monte Carlo and ideally this would be the best to do it on her birthday, but was looking for someplace more romantic than the casino in Monte Carlo. I have tried doing online searches and nothing really exciting for proposals in Monte Carlo.

I hear Santorini Greece is real nice for a proposal.

Has anyone hear ever done the same thing and have any ideas?, or experienced cruisers of these ports do you have any recommendations at all?

I want to make this a real super occasion for her and looking forward to the trip very much.

Thank you all in advance !! :D

Monte Carlo is a very opulent, elegant city and would make an excellent locale for a proposal. You could propose on the grounds of the palace or at the ritzy restaurant by the casino. Santorini is extremely romantic and picturesque; a proposal overlooking the sea from high atop the cliffs would be gorgeous. In Malta, you could take the ferry to Gozo and propose at the Azure Window. Whatever you do, she'll love it!

Sigh...how romantic...and so many places to choose from.

Just some ideas:

* In Monte Carlo, you'll be right next door to Monaco. There is a stunningly beautiful garden in Monaco overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Also nearby is Nice...can't go wrong proposing there.

* In Florence, you can propose outside the Uffizi Museum, at the Piazza della Signoria...you'll be surrounded by massive statues. Steps away is the Ponte Vecchio, the bridge crossing the Arno River.

* In Rome...you'll have many places you can propose...in front of St. Peter's Basilica or inside...in front of the Trevi Fountain...Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Colosseum, Forum,...or my choice, walk inside St. Peter's Basilica, walk up the dome...there's an area overlooking the square...what a view!

* In Athens...the obvious, at the Acropolis...in front of the Parthenon.

* In Kusadasi...yes, in Ephesus. Right in front of the "Library".

* Santorini...like everyone else...you can't go wrong.

Happy sailing and congratulations! :)

So romantic! I went on almost the exact same cruise too :). So, as a somewhat romantic person, I think proposing on her birthday would be amazing! Monaco is very nice... you should google "best place to propose in Monaco"- there are lots of options :)

Well- my husband proposed on a boat (in Pittsburgh)... so that is cool. But maybe not Windjammer? On her b-day, you could do a specialty restaurant, let them know what you are doing in advance, and propose there? Make sure to take a picture of your food and wine bottle- just last night, DH and I were saying we wish we knew what wine we had that night...

I would not do Santorini. While a beautiful place, it is also the most crowded cruise port that I have ever been in.

In Monte Carlo, the palace or garden would both be lovely. You could also go to the town of Eze that day. It would be a lovely backdrop for a proposal.

Or pretty much anywhere in Rome.

Seeing that your cruise is in October I'm not sure crowds would be an issue anywhere except Rome. If you're considering Rome then keep in mind that the port is an hour away from the actual city.

My personal vote is for Santorini - you could do it in Oia or at one of the cafes in Fira overlooking the caldera (this might be an option if it is raining).

Second choice would be Athens at the Acropolis.

As an aside about proposing on her birthday - do you really want to be celebrating two important events on the same day ( a couple of friends of mine were in similar situation and decided against it).

I proposed to my wife in the Cafe de Paris in Monaco which is in Casino Square next to the casino.

It was very romantic until she started waving her hand about saying the ring fits nicely only for it then to fly off her finger and land under a table several feet away!!

There is a nice outside seating area overlooking the square (and the Casino and the Hotel de Paris) which would be perfect for a proposal (along with a nice bottle of champagne!).

Otherwise I would choose Santorini - try and find a nice quiet area in Oia to propose (there are some around if you walk enough!) Alternatively you can propose in the small fortress in Oia or if you head out of Oia along the coast there is a nice 'church' with amazing views which would be nice (about 30 mins walk).

Just as an afterthought, in Kusadasi there is Bird Island next to where the ship docks (easily walkable). We visited in November when it was very quiet and no birds but if you are there when the birds are nesting I imagine that would be very romantic. It is called Guvercinada or Kusadasi Kalesi if you search Google maps.

Good Luck and congratulations!

I totally agree with Monaco the gardens are beautiful outside the Cathedral where Princes Grace got married, there's also a spot beside the Royal Palace which overlooks the harbour of Monaco. Santorini is ok but very busy As an old lady lol I would suggest proposing on her actual birthday, I got married 50. Years ago on my birthday and were still going strong, don't wait .

So many choices to propose. And don't be mistaken, October is one of the peak times for the Mediterranean. Perfect weather for the numerous tour that require a lot of walking.

I wouldn't proposes in dirty dusty sites such as Acropolis or Ephesus (hopefully someone will take a photo); Santorini and Monaco you probably can't avoid having many tourist around you. But both of those places will have excellent opportunities to snap a photo so the happy couple can post your engagement photo on FB. :)

I suggest you take each of these cities and google the best place to propose in "fill in the city". You'll get much more specific spots.

My son just proposed to his gf on the bridge over the gorge with Neuschwanstein Castle (Cinderella Castle) in the backgroun (outside of Munich). The plan was set, we get up there and find the trail is closed due to ice. Our guide had us climb over the gate. There were still many others that also scaled the gate, but it was nice for them to be able to complete the proposal and we got the picture. So maybe you should have a couple of spots in mind in case Plan A doesn't work out.

Thank you all for your great advice and ideas where to propose. :D I really appreciate it and hope to make it a really special occasion,;)

I won't be considering the Windjammer option to propose though...LOL:p I do like the humor in the suggestion.:D

I think that would not be a good start to a long and happy marriage, so I will just keep the Windjammer option to eat while we are on a cruise.:)
