wendychloecruiser Posted January 26, 2017 #29 Share Posted January 26, 2017 This show started out as a totally raunchy and vulgar show. Over the years it has been toned down considerably and the RCCL interpretation is certainly different from the Broadway show and movie. What was I expecting? I was "hoping" for something that would feature great singing and dancing (that was fulfilled), but was distressed with the glorification of certain values (including smoking) that the children in the audience would see. I'm sure even the children in the audience could differentiate between real life and acting.
wendychloecruiser Posted January 26, 2017 #30 Share Posted January 26, 2017 If you're disturbed by the "morality" in GREASE, please..please...stay away from CHICAGO and MAMA MIA. And Les Mis and Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera...
davenew Posted January 26, 2017 #31 Share Posted January 26, 2017 Um, okay. Let's start with the fact that Grease is a musical that has been a hit on broadway and as a movie. It's entertainment. I don't think it's ever been sold as a documentary lol. The smoking is part of the show and always has been. They weren't smoking real cigarettes btw.:eek::eek::eek: Not Vaping?? Merion_Mom Posted January 26, 2017 #32 Share Posted January 26, 2017 And Les Mis and Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera... The point of what I and the poster above you wrote is that THOSE shows are on Royal Caribbean ships. Not the ones you mention. cruzeluver Posted January 26, 2017 #33 Share Posted January 26, 2017 I cannot believe I am taking the bait and replying to such an inane complaint, but here goes. "Grease" has been around since the early 1970's and has always had scenes of teenagers smoking, discussing sex, using profanity, you know, stuff teens do. All of these behaviors are also on display in the film version.Royal also I believe has a ship featuring a production of "Chicago" which also contains smoking, a lot of alcohol consumption (kind of like what happens on a a cruise ship :p) and a good deal of sexual content. It even has adultery! Oh the horror!! Showing people engaging in an activity is not glorifying nor endorsing it. Art has an obligation to illustrate the human condition and not tone it down for the easily offended. There have been some truly stupid threads started in my time here but this one is right up there. Rare BillOh Posted January 26, 2017 #34 Share Posted January 26, 2017 Was it different than the Broadway show or the movie. Seriously, what were you expecting? Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Forums mobile app I have to go with you on this one. I may be one of the most active anti smoking activists over the past 30 years, but it was a portrayal of the period and not a documentary! I didn't manage to get too upset even when my teenage crush Olivia Newton John lit up and went slutty at the end.
Freehiker Posted January 26, 2017 #35 Share Posted January 26, 2017 Saw Grease on Independence... Great acting in a show with absolutely no redeeming moral values to convey. It was totally inaccurate to my experience and the majority of other's experiences in that timeframe. We actually cared about getting good grades, not about the nonsense that was portrayed. I'm actually surprised RCCL went with this nonsense. So here's my question... why was it necessary to have the actors/actresses smoke on stage? It added nothing to the story. In addition, it gave a message that smoking was okay. C'mon, if you don't want people to smoke in their cabins or on their balconies, then don't glorify their smoking onstage! Major mistake by RCCL! Homosassa Posted January 26, 2017 #37 Share Posted January 26, 2017 I'm going to go out on a limb here and surmise that people attending a theatrical performance understand that they cannot replicate in real life what they see on stage. If not, I'm just happy there are no guns in Grease. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Let's hope RCCL never does a version of "West Side Story." bigque Posted January 26, 2017 #38 Share Posted January 26, 2017 So I guess your movie watching is limited to "G" rated movies and cartoons??? What is your tolerance for glorification......... sex or suggestions of it, gun violence, fighting, drugs, terror???? because every movie "PG" and above has this or is it just smoking in movies and plays that bothers you??
Havingfun2010 Posted January 26, 2017 #39 Share Posted January 26, 2017 I watched a movie on TV last night, that had people smoking in it. I wonder why they didn't "fuzzy face" it out, like they do with nudity? I strongly dislike smoking, being around smokers and smoking in the casino. However, smoking was common place during certain times, and you can't just erase history. Grease is a musical, and part of it has people smoking. If you go to it, you should have known about it. Just like if you go to a stage show of Magic Mike, you might see some things you don't agree with, but you should know before going what the theme is! It's like going to a late night comedy, and expecting it to be rated G when on the door says, adults only. Unless you live in a bubble, it's your responsibility to decide to go or not to go. mjkacmom Posted January 26, 2017 #41 Share Posted January 26, 2017 (edited) Let's hope RCCL never does a version of "West Side Story." Or RENT. Grease was by far my favorite movie when I was 10 - saw it over and over (as did my peers). My kids are involved in musical theater, lots of outdated customs in most of the oldies, but they're still great entertainment. LilBlackDress Posted January 26, 2017 #44 Share Posted January 26, 2017 WOW wow WoW!! Please tell me the OP was just bored and wanted to see if anyone would bite. I am just amazed that someone would go and watch a musical and NOT have a clue as to its content. In my cruise planner for the show, it states "Parents should supervise children at all times." I still say this has to be a joke and I fell for it.

mollyeilis Posted January 26, 2017 #47 Share Posted January 26, 2017 I watched Grease a million times and grew up with smokers and was still ever weak willed enough to take up smoking because of those things. Never did anything else in that movie either, at least not as a teen! Just because a show "glorifies" things doesn't mean that people will follow it. And why would someone bring a kid to Grease? Haven't we all learned from our mistake with that movie originally??? (Why was I watching it multiple times as a preteen and teen???) Another smoking thread  The Grease script makes references to smoking, and it implies that cool kids smoke. They even sing about smoking. That's how Frenchie got her nickname. That's what she says....

TC1957 Posted January 26, 2017 #50 Share Posted January 26, 2017 This is not the mid 1980's. Indeed, I feel saddened that your high school was so far behind the times! Why glorify smoking? There was absolutely no theatrical reason to have the characters smoke onstage. I sounds like you are wanting way too much from entertainment. I have one serious question. Were you been detained in the theatre against your will during the show? If not, all you had to do is get off your south side (when walking north) and go somewhere else on the ship. It is not the place of RCI to reinforce YOUR moralities. You must really get distraught watching television, listening to the radio, going to a movie, being at a public pool/water park, etc.
