Bootman4U Posted March 8, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2017 Lobster and all those other "we used to have's" AGAIN, and without an "upcharge" OR Free Room Service OR Free Internet Would you be more inclined to cruise with them? Don't tell anybody "it isn't possible" because we all know that it is. Which line is going to "break ranks" first?

the_dylaness Posted March 8, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 8, 2017 Many still do offer free (if somewhat limited esp for breakfast) room service. I thought Disney's room service was fantastic. NCL Jade had the worst room service of any cruise I have ever taken. And, they charge for anything other than continental breakfast.
cb at sea Posted March 8, 2017 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2017 There is no way the cruise lines will go back to the "days of yore".....too many new cruisers who thing what they offer today is a bargain! If only they knew how it used to be....
Shayhooper Posted March 8, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 8, 2017 No, I can't think of anything that I am missing from when I started taking cruises 20 years ago. When was internet ever free on a ship? One of the best things about a cruise is that my work email doesn't come through on my phone. Being able to completely disconnect is priceless. Room Service breakfast is still free, which is enough for me. A simple tag on the door at night ensures I have coffee, fruit, and pastries in bed or on the balcony each morning. Lobster isn't anything I would purchase in a restaurant and I don't expect it on a cruise ship. It is much cheaper and easier to steam up some lobster at home. sanger727 Posted March 8, 2017 #7 Share Posted March 8, 2017 For me I haven't seen anything changed that is a 'deal breaker'. Never brought water onto the ship, hardly ever order room service, don't like lobster, etc... I didn't care for the change to 'a la carte' specialties; but then I got the SDP as a booking perk so that worked out to a gain, not a loss. Getting the UBP included with booking was also a big gain and overshadowed any minor losses like the lobster and the room service charge. So for my situation I'm getting more value for my cruising dollars, not less... Sent from my iPhone using Forums

wdsted Posted March 8, 2017 #9 Share Posted March 8, 2017 No, because we'd rather take 3 perfectly acceptable cruises a year instead of one high-priced one on a ship full of snobs. We're more than OK with NCL's current product and pricing. And occasionally splurge on the Haven. seashells Posted March 8, 2017 #13 Share Posted March 8, 2017 If I could have ONE thing on a Caribbean cruise.... it would be the Steel Band drum music of the Caribbean. I miss it.
Moby0215 Posted March 8, 2017 #14 Share Posted March 8, 2017 They could go back to doing all those things but then prices would have increased more then they already have. It's all supply and demand. Simple economics. I prefer for them to keep the base price as low as they can and let me decide if I spend more on uncharged items. Rare mking8288 Posted March 8, 2017 #15 Share Posted March 8, 2017 Longer days / time onshore for those port stops ... calling on Cape Canaveral with a 1 PM to 9 PM schedule trying to sell "deals" to Disney, Epicot & Magic Kingdom just don't make any common sense - especially given the latest price matrix. Some families still do it just because. The rest of us just do the smarter things ... been there, done it. Or, the slow Atlantic crossing for Bermuda, running on 2 out of 3 engines at 12 or 13 knots ... Ditto for getting into Old San Juan on the NY-Caribbean run as late as 3 or 4 PM ... for what ?? Footnote - those sailing out of Miami & other homeports don't necessary see any problems.
Travelling2Some Posted March 8, 2017 #16 Share Posted March 8, 2017 We cruise for itinerary and price. I don't like lobster, don't need room service and want to be off the grid. Thought I'd be in the minority with that attitude but it looks like I'm not. I also never use the pools, hot tubs, casino, spa, gym, sports deck or specialty restaurants. What sells me on a particular cruise is length of time in ports, good main shows and a free beverage package.
mugtech Posted March 8, 2017 #17 Share Posted March 8, 2017 I don't want to pay for other people's lobster, room service, Internet etc, which is the result of "free" stuff. Since the drinks package is now "free" on the Sky, I cannot imagine paying the current prices for a 4 day cruise.
deladypilot Posted March 8, 2017 #18 Share Posted March 8, 2017 Never understood the upset reactions regarding lobster. What is the big deal? Does eating lobster make people feel like they are extra special or something? I eat it all the time and it never makes me feel any different than I did the night before when I ate chicken. Dont care about room service as I have a coffee pot in my cabin and if I really wanted something I can still have it delivered for free or go get it and bring it back but we dont eat in the cabin except for a snack here and there. I dont use the internet when im on vacation. That is the entire point of vacation for me....Disconnect. If an emergency arises at home my family knows how to reach me. I would rather see them lower the prices and quit giving away all the perks. I get the drink package as a "perk" but would never buy it because I do not drink enough, so for me all it really means is I paid more for a cruise than I should have but I love to cruise so I do it What I would rather see is the gratuity/DSC included in the price. Just roll it in so there is no more debate about removing it or not. Don't make it a perk, just include it in the original price
mdsgu Posted March 8, 2017 #19 Share Posted March 8, 2017 Free internet...meh. Free room service...not a make or break for me. Free lobster...would be nice, but it's not going to sway my decision. I do enjoy the free drink packages!
nednrom Posted March 8, 2017 #20 Share Posted March 8, 2017 I don't think there is anything I miss from 25 years ago. As a matter of fact I like some things such as getting dressed formally after a port call. There are variety of activities and better ships. So I'm good. detroitlions Posted March 8, 2017 #21 Share Posted March 8, 2017 As stated above the lobster is not a big deal I have had it many times and it is barley better than shrimp I like Colossal crab legs from Alaska way better and I also like Halibut and a good Porterhouse better. I pick lobster off the sea floor like bugs in Florida its fun and I enjoy eating them but come on folk that cruise should know there are other things that are better or just as good. I remember on Carnival on lobster night folks would tip the waiter to bring out 10 plates of lobster that were really two bites of a tail. Lame!!! The whole old school cruising thing is kinda out the generation X and younger do not care about these old traditions. And most of it will not ever come back like shooting skeet from the back of a boat lol they wont even do fireworks anymore . A lot of folks want internet i get that one but I also do not use it cause I don't want to be available for work on my vacation.

LrgPizza Posted March 8, 2017 #23 Share Posted March 8, 2017 Not even something I'd notice. 1. I've never used room service. I have no need for it. 2. I've never had really good lobster on a cruise. I generally select something different from the menu. 3. I don't care about the internet. I can check email with free wifi at a port if I can't go without. Nothing you mentioned factors into any cruising decision I ever have made or will make.

At the end of the cruise, the only item on my bill is usually just the DSC :)
