Very, very disappointed with the hard sell on Liberty of the Seas

Recommended Posts

We were on the LOS in June and were approached three times while dining in the Windjammer. Each time, the employee greeted us in a way that just seemed like they were being friendly. However, it was always followed by a hard sell speech. It is annoying and I would prefer not to be bothered while having a meal. I think it's rude and that they should limit their hard sells to tables set up that I can avoid.

This didn't impact my enjoyment of the cruise. The ship was wonderful, the shows were entertaining, and I would not hesitate to sail on RCL again.

You lost me when you complained about not being able to "mess around" in a cruise ship cabin with your kids in the room. Realistic expectations don't seem to be at the forefront, which puts context to your other complaints. I truly hope you can find a ship in the future that suits your desires.

Editing to say sorry, didn't realize this thread was so old. Wouldn't have posted if I had seen that.

This being your last RCL cruise is great news for the rest of us I hate being on a cruise when you find the guy who is never happy, I cruise Oasis in October and Anthem in November. As for as the crew trying to sell you something just say no thank you.

But if you are so dumb to go over to the table and ask more question we’ll too bad, they share your cabin number with every crew member their is a fool born everyday.

A day is what you make of it, make it a good one.

Wow I find the ok not happy about so many things. I have never been really bothered by the guys selling stuff. Usually just a no thank you and it is done. They should not get off ship in Falmouth or Nassau if they are so scared of hawkers. They are 10 times more aggressive in port than onboard.

Tugboat we will be on serenaded and freedom February. Trying MSC in June. We are trying to make sure to be on oasis for Halloween this coming October but it is up in the air. Will be trying to do the halloween 2018 cruise and the following week for b2b. Unfortunately son is not going to be coming with us this year. Have Alaska booked for July 2019 on ovation, then brillance and land tour the following week.

I am sure everything is perfect at Disney, but I do agree WJ on almost every ship is just bad, also hope Phil Anderson and his cowboy hat is gone before our next cruise at end of April, he seems popular but not my taste of music.
I sailed on the Liberty last year and just couldn't handle Phil Anderson. Would rather have Matt Yee any day.

It’s pretty sad that having to say “no thank you” every now and then is such a huge inconvenience...

Plus it’s hardly a “hard” sell, if you say your not interested they walk away.

We had someone like the OP at our table one cruise, every dinner was a run down on what a terrible ship and experience she was having, she was just plain rude to the staff at our table, after three nights we moved tables. I did see her several times during the cruise, on almost every occasion she was berating a staff member over something.

At the end of the trip I found the table staff from our original table and gave them a nice tip, they certainly deserved it.

I was on the Liberty last week. Loved Phil Anderson & never encountered the "hard sell". Had an absolutely fantastic time. Would book it again in a heartbeat. Ship & entertainment was excellent. Loved Rebecca and Donovan, Saturday Night Fever and the ice show. Giovanni's Table was our favorite place to eat. Vladimir took EXCELLENT care of us. Go to the R Bar. Ana Maria is fantastic there. Oh also, Sabor was wonderful. Make sure Cecilia takes care of you.

I sailed on Liberty on the 12/3 cruise it had been years since I was on RC my last few cruises have been Celebrity. I was annoyed with all the sales. RC is far worse than Celebrity. It seems that people flocked to get $10 purses or 50% what ever when it was announced. The only announcements you could actually understand over the speakers was to announce a something to purchase.

The Liberty seems to have become home for some people, several people we met or heard talking spent a week a month on the ship at least. They did not really get special treatment but seemed to feel like they owned the ship.

Phil had his family on the cruise when we went and acted like a passenger that just happened to stop at the piano and play some, one night one of the regulars got up and did 2 songs, Phil's stepson did one and we never heard Phil. Either you like him or you don't. I did not like he and his wife standing over my shoulder in the casino wanting me to get off the machine they wanted.

I did not have the same great experience in the dining room, I had My Time reservations but never got good service until the last night and that service was by the assistant.

Some of the problems we are facing now are our own because of the prepaid tips, and drink packages. That does not excuse the fact that when I go on a cruise I want to be taken care of.

Even with all the annoyances we still had a great trip, met great people and had fun. Would I cruise on Liberty again? Probably just because its cheap, and I can be to the port in an hour and a half.

Thing is, “No Thank You” usually is not enough to get rid of them. After we were asked if we were sure and if we understood what a fantastic opportunity we were missing. And again at least two more nights.

When I watch free TV, I understand that commercials are part of the deal. But when I watch HBO, not so much. RCCL has become the A&E network of cruising.

I have been on Norwegian and just got off of the Carnival Vista in Oct and never experience the hard sale that people are mentioning here. I hope they receive enough complaints so that they stop this practice before I board the allure.

We just got off the NCL Breakaway and the HARD sales pitch 24/7 is the same if not worse. If that bothers you, Disney is your only option and 2-3x the price. There's a reason Disney is so much more expensive. RCI, Norwegian, and Carnival are all bad. Norwegian almost requires you to eat at a speciality restaurant each night by providing MDR food that is equivalent to dog food.

I'll put up with the shilling before I get just plain gouged by Disney. The Disney Corporation is very skilled at grossly overcharging for their product to a large and blindly loyal customer base.

I work in a large city with a daily gauntlet of panhandlers. Ignoring Carnival's overselling their photos, NCL's overselling Bingo, and Royal overselling the junk they sell on the promenade is nothing.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is precisely the reason why there's more than one cruise line. If Disney's your thing (obviously, Royal isn't), go for it. If the inflated fares and overpriced merchandise are your preference, have at it. Those of us who are "loyal to Royal" certainly have our issues with the company, but overall find the product much to our liking. So, you cruise your way, we'll cruise ours ... and never the twain shall meet aboard ship. Smooth sailing.

Well said,we all have our own preferences and RC are ours too.

I understand your frustration with the selling, it was everywhere when we sailed on the Liberty of the Seas in April. I noticed they had several tables set up outside the windjammer, the spa was selling stuff and the specialty dinning had several people trying to entice diners to check them out. One thing I didn't see that I've noticed on other cruise lines (Carnival) no annoying announcements at the pool deck selling spa and other stuff. I would hear announcements in the hallways a lot on Carnival and that was just too much. I thought the ship was beautiful, and the staff were wonderful. I wish they had more activities...I agree that the activities were lacking and the kids camp staff were less than happy to be there. I enjoyed the ship to point that we are sailing her again in April of 2018. I expect the selling...I think the more you sail the more you notice it. When I was new to cruising I looked at the "selling" as an opportunity to learn everything that is available on my cruise. I didn't fall victim to all the add ons...I'm sure that is part of the marketing plan. I also cruised NCL and found them to be the best with allowing you to just enjoy your cruise without the annoying selling. Good luck to you in finding the best cruise.

We are a captive audience and they are all doing a job.

We have took advantage several times and negotiated some great deals on specialty dining and truly enjoyed the experience.

In my experience if we are not interested a simple no thank you suffices and they don't hassle us.
