DO NOT BUY EFFY Jewelry on the cruise ship! NO RETURN policy and LIED to!!

My husband bought me a beautiful pair of diamond earrings on the Splendor. We were told that they were much lower priced than we would find anywhere else. We were told that Effy would price match if we found earrings cheaper somewhere else. These were lies. After getting home I was able to find my earrings for $696 cheaper and they would not return them. They have a NO RETURN policy. BE FOREWARNED.

Did you get a diamond report with your onboard purchase? If so, are you sure the earnings you found at home were the same 4C; Cut, Clarity, Color and Carat as the pair from onboard?

This is the only way to tell if the earrings are the same or cheaper.

The receipt we signed had NO policies listed on it. They told us to come back the next night for the certification, appraisal, and EFFY printed receipt (not the one I signed). We trusted the sales person we bought from. She said that they were priced way better than we could find outside of the ship, and she backed it up with "we price match if you do." What she didn't say was that it has to be an EFFY product.

Funny part is that the certification, appraisal, and the second EFFY printed receipt aren't given until the next night and that EFFY receipt is what has the NO RETURN POLICY on it and EFFY price match only-not the receipt they had me sign. It's just deceitful.

Once you call Carnival, they blame it on vendor policy that they have NO control of it. EFFY blames Carnival-it's AWFUL.

Yes, they gave us a printed appraisal which lists the same Cut, Clarity, Color, and Weight. The earrings I'm comparing it to are the same (as well as certified), but it's not an EFFY brand so they won't price match (which was not explained on the ship). I'm just warning people to ask the return policy and make sure that they know their prices before they go because once you are off the ship, there is NO support and you are stuck with it, even if they gave you promises-it's just a sales pitch. EFFY and CARNIVAL should be ashamed of themselves.

I went to the shopping specialist's shopping talk aboard the ship and believed what they said. It's sad that they are so deceitful. When you find out that your product isn't worth what you paid or that you can get it cheaper at home after they promised and backed it with a price match guarantee-which is a lie....it's an awful place to be.

Hate this happened to you,. but I would never ever take merchandise that did not have a receipt with it. Not understanding the second night receipt thing? Bit odd. and personally would not buy anything that valuable on a cruise ship. Hopefully the company will return and refund your money!

I'm not defending Effy...I think all on-board jewelry shops are rip-offs and I never recommend purchasing from them. But I'm a little confused on the part where you said Effy would only price match another Effy. Don't they design their own jewelry? How would Effy price-match non-Effy products? I ask with totally sincerity.

Oh, I did have my receipt-the one I signed. They printed one with the policies and gave it to me the next night with my appraisal. I've never had trouble buying jewelry on a cruise before. EFFY won't budge. They won't take them back or price match. :(

That's our point. The sales person told us that Effy price matched if we found the earrings cheaper at home. I figured that was fair since I was on a ship and couldn't compare prices. Effy's policies weren't listed on our signed receipt. We were asked to come back the next night to get the appraisal and other paperwork. They gave us another printed receipt from EFFY with it. It wasn't until we called their customer service that they mentioned reading the back of the printed receipt (not the one we signed when we bought the earrings). That's where the EFFY policies are stated. It's a scam. I just want people to be aware so they don't make the same mistake.

Buying any jewelry is a gamble as far as pricing goes, especially on a ship. If you like the earrings, I would suggest just be happy.

I personally would never buy nor want expensive jewelry...the inexpensive stuff is just as pretty and you never have to worry about losing them or the value of them.

I walked away with the copy of my signed receipt. Unfortunately they gave me a 2nd printed receipt with the appraisal the next day that listed the policies on back.

My credit card company said that they gave me the 2nd "printed" receipt with the appraisal the next night and policies on the back because the law requires that they show their policies within 24 hours. Notice that they didn't give it to me when I purchased them. It's just deceitful.

Neither EFFY or CARNIVAL will work on it with us because they blame each other. Carnival says that they are not responsible because it's a vendor. EFFY says they gave me the policy within 24 hours. It's a lose-lose for us, but hopefully people will read this and be aware. We did some research and spoke to the credit card company. They definitely scammed us. We've bought jewelry from the ships before but it was Diamonds International-never had a problem. This is a new vendor for them. They don't know what customer service is and don't appreciate their customers. Sad.... I won't buy anything off a cruise ship again-lesson learned the hard way! :(

My husband was just doing something special for me. I'm happy with his thoughtfulness-just sad that we overpaid by a lot and were "sold" a lie. I just don't want anyone else to do the same.

Our charge card company explained how EFFY protected themselves with the 24 hour rule of showing their policies (by having us come back the next night to get the appraisal and the 2nd printed receipt with EFFY's logo and policies listed on the back. We didn't even notice them until the customer service rep told us to look at the back of the printed receipt. The one we actually signed had no policies on it, just our purchase total and room number. :(

Rule number one a verbal contract has 0 credibility in a court of law. (he-she said scenario) Was policy posted in the shop?

Never buy a substantial purchase that does not have a written policies on returns or exchanges. Would you buy a car or a home without one?

Nobody is to blame but yourself. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry this happened to you. In my opinion since Effy is on board through a contract with Carnival and you entered into

a contract with Carnival, Carnival should intervene on your part. Getting the word out there that Effy was/is deceitful

and the manner in which you were treated was not above board is the only gratification you will get. I hope you like the earrings enough to let it go and wear them with pride. Lesson learned and shared.......

This is why we've never bought any of the really expensive stuff on board. We've bought some earrings, and I think a pendant, about 10 years ago. When Tanzanite was up and coming, so not quite as expensive as it is now. But I'm talking like $200 pieces, so any price match would probably only be a few dollars, not a big deal. Obviously, if the price difference is closer to $700, then you probably bought something quite expensive. I'm sorry that it didn't work out. It's a reminder for others to beware, and I think that goes for all of the expensive items on board. My husband always looks at the Rolex watches, but he always realizes it's better to make that purchase on land, in a local shop.

This pisses me off:mad:, this all happens in the name of "Corp. Greed". With no intentions of buying on my next cruise I want to pick out some jewelry get right to the point of paying and ask these questions. If they price match? then when they say yes, I can say with any credited jeweler. Sorry this kind of stuff really gets to me, the little guys want to spend their hard earned money in your store, and you feel the need to down right lie and be deceitful.

Have you price matched your earrings with similar EFFY earrings?? I wouldn't expect a price match with an entirely different jewelry maker. And if you received the terms/conditions on the 2nd day and read them, then it seems that would have been the time to return them for a refund, while you are still on the cruise.

Just enjoy the earrings and the new found knowledge that high price purchases are best made from a local company. That way if you have problems or concerns then they can be handled.

I'm not being rude or sarcastic, but I would think that the price match would have to be from the same company. Just like any store that price matches a product. It has to be the exact product IE: Motorola TV, they wouldn't give you a price match on an offbrand TV that is the same size and same functions.

I think it sucks that they were not up front on their item and I'm sorry this happened to you.

Quite right. It's like price matching a Carnival cruise with another cruise line with the same itinerary and sail date. Price matching is not meant to be this way. That said, I am sure the sale person took advantage of OP by giving her a misleading picture.

I understand feeling you have been taken advantage of, that's not a good feeling. I don't buy jewelry on board, but Effy is,a brand, and I understand their policy of price matching to their brand i.e if you found Effy earrings cheaper at your local Macy's. I wouldn't expect to buy a Tag Hauer watch on a ship and have them price match to a Sieko watch I priced at the mall.

Of course they aren't going to price match with another brand. many diamond earrings don't have a brand. I have a friend that is a diamond broker. He could make me a pair of earrings and say they cost whatever I want to get a price match. The 4 C's also mean nothing unless they are on an actual GIA verification. Brand named diamond jewelry is ridiculously marked up...see Tiffany. I would never expect them to match an off brand.

OP, I understand your frustration. What I don't get is who is training the sale staff to purposely lie to the customer regarding policies? Is it EFFY, Carnival or both?

If enough people have been duped by this, I bet some type of class action would be possible.

I never buy anything expensive in international waters.

I am trying to figure out how she was taken advantage of? There are plenty of Effy stores in the U.S. Macy's even sells Effy. As one poster stated, if you did not like the restrictions on the receipt, you had time to get a refund onboard. If you see the price go down in the future at a retailer, get your refund then. Call the NY store if you have issues. Honestly, Effy makes their own jewelry so how one could think they could randomly price match anything other than Effy is a little bewildering. Personally Effy has been great with warranty with us in the past. Call the NY store if you have issues.

Sorry to hear about this. $696 is a lot of money to feel cheated about.

Here is a little clarification if it would help (you or anybody) for another time....Effy (or the manufacturer) will not price match, the on board store will price match (or so they say!) It is of my understanding that they say they would price match it you found it at a cheaper price at an jewelry store.....the "fine print" is that the store has to be on any of the islands you are visiting, cannot be an online store, must be the price without a sale or special price, and must be during the cruise, etc etc etc....long list of cannots.

Could it be that your purchase meets anything on their list of cannots?
