I have sailed on many ships, mostly Carnival. Been on well over 50 different ships (including RCCL, Costa, Princess, MSC, HAL, Disney, Celebrity, and Azamara), you know what I notified the difference in maintenance was???? Black paint hides more than white....period. The maintenance that Carnival performs is the same as every other cruise line I have been on and witnessed, no better, no worse.

Jimbo, you crack me up, and I laughed so hard with that statement.

Since I don't have the maintenance records and financials from "every other cruise line," I'm not able to double check your comparative analysis.

Instead, I'm just going by the WHITE (not black) virtually-rust-streak-free paint I see on the Princess ships, compared to the amount of rust visible on Carnival ships.

Happy to provide the humor....that said, my statement stands. Interestingly, the worst ship I was ever on was the Pacific Princess, but that is another story. We can move on.

Just curious as to where you thing the soot goes and if weather and movement has anything to do with it.

Well if it goes onto the loungers, they should be washed or replaced. Leaching them dirty is disgusting and poor maintenance.

Oh, how incorrectly you deduce.

My primary purpose for viewing threads in the Carnival forum is to learn about the line as I prepare for an upcoming cruise. I will be sailing on a two week Carnival cruise in a suite-- complimentary. This will be my first Carnival cruise, and typically cruise critic can be a good source of information-- after filtering out the posting by:

the cheaters-- "this is how I used the casino as an ATM"

the inconsiderate-- "my personal reasons are more important than following MDR dress code outlined by the cruise line"; and

the braggarts-- "this is how I smuggled liquor on board"

The true waste of time, for me, is responding to these type of threads:

-"I'm so excited because I just got a free upgrade!"

-"It's such a waste of money to pay extra to eat in a specialty restaurant when I can gorge myself at the free buffet."

-"I'm so mad that xxxxx will be closed/delayed/relocated during my cruise!"

[Look hard enough in the topics for any of the lines and I'm sure you'll find these examples-- not just Carnival]

It has been this particular subject, this thread, that I have been most vocal. To me, when I see those filthy stained loungers, I begin to wonder... that if Carnival crew, staff, and officers are blind to this particular dirt, then what other items to they overlook?

Lol, I love how you throw in the fact that it was "complimentary". You would surely never waste a Shilling on a plebe filled Carnival ship! How many monocles are you bringing btw? What time is your lecture to the Captain?

No way. Sorry, just no. The Victory was like a garbage scowl compared to the MSC Divina, which was spotless and being cleaned and maintained constantly.

That's not cheating. That's making a choice to use an established policy as an advantage over alternative choices offered. Cheating implies someone is doing something not otherwise allowed. In your example someone is just using a service Carnival offers. No cheating.

It is nothing to be distressed over.

You will have a good time. Don't sweat it.

Ships are in salt water. Salt water causes rust. Carpets tear and get stained, especially with thousands of people trampling all over it week after week and spilling soda, beer, wine, piña coladas and other drinks of the day and food all over it.

Although you statement is true, it is also an indication of how well Carnival maintains their ships. For example, rust will happen but in the important traffic areas, those should be painted on a regular basis. Same with carpet cleaning etc. Poor maintenance in the public areas are a clear indication of how the mechanical areas are looking.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

Carnival's lack of maintenance would not be "small stuff".

She will enjoy it. Just like everything else, it is what you make of it. If you go in with a negative preconceived notion and start to nit pick and dissect every little cosmetic issue then you most definitely will not have a good time. If you can overlook that and know that rust on ships happen and carpeting gets torn and worn down pretty quickly along with other cosmetic issues , you will be fine.

Carnival is failing at maintaining their ships. Having rust around hot tubs would not be acceptable to anyone.

I remember walking down a dock not too long ago, and a family was next to us. A kid, about 10 or so made a comment that said something like - Look at the rust bucket we are parked next to. Glad we are not on that thing. I looked up, and sure enough it was a Carnival ship. You don't need maintenance records to see the lack of maintenance.

No, it doesn't. You'll see streaks of gold or blue running down the black paint. It just shows up differently, but actually looks worse on black than white.

Garbage scowl....LOL

Let's see.....hmmmm, is that maintaining or maybe something more than that..... what could it be, what could it be.... wait I got it..... age. Divina is 12 years newer than Victory. Kind of throws out the spotless to garbage argument (I do appreciate your objective view....especially the garbage scowl tho). A 17 year old ship is well, what is the word to describe it....older.

What a coincidence that you (of all people) overheard a kid disparaging a Carnival ship....oh wait, how is your son?

Ive seen rust on EVERY cruise ship Ive been on because thats what happens when steel and salt water/air meet together, genius. Shall I post up the first 50 complaints about rust on Royal Caribbean ships to show people what a fool you are?

Nah, we already know.

for the record seeing rust never ruined my cruise. So much so that though I'm sure I've seen some, I can't specifically recall where it was. also that would be soot on the loungers if you've ever stood in line on Green Thunder you would notice it landing on you. Should they change the pads...yeah. Otherwise as far as maintenance I always see crews around the ship- cleaning, painting, even varnishing railings.

Some of you are so very defensive! I wouldn't have even thought this is a topic for debate. The Carnival ships are CLEARLY not maintained to the standards of other lines. They have a worn out look to them. Dream and Oasis are the exact same age, but Oasis is in much better condition. It just is what it is. I still sail Carnival, but I'm well aware of the fact that the ships look aged, rusted, and worn out. That was the first impression I had when we sailed Carnival last year as well... just how poor overall condition the ship was. Still had a great time, but come on.... is this even debatable?

Oh, Ethel, do I hear venom in your voice?

First, you are spot-on with respect to my intentional mention that it's a complimentary cruise-- in a suite, please remember.

My Carnival Corporation contact knows that I am " ...at home on Princess... " and usually ensures I am accommodated on that line. This time, however, it was me that opted to give Carnival a try. If my wallet were a factor, Princess would be my choice.

Monocles? Precise word choice, though I am confused at the implication: that I'm old, old-fashioned, or just "out of date." Perhaps you meant something else. For the record, I'm "middle-aged" and not retired. So, no monocle for me.

Did you mean magnifying glass or microscope? Sadly, as other posters have pointed out in this thread, even a blind man could clearly see Carnival's maintenance faults.

Lecture to the captain? Ethel, dear: I'm smart enough to know that would be a waste of time. While The Captain is the most powerful individual on the ship, his/her hands are tied, bond and gagged either by the corporate mantra of shareholder value or most likely swayed by incentive compensation weighed and distributed by same corporate values.

For balance, let me say that I have read encouraging threads in the Carnival forum. Chef's Table sounds like a dining experience that may surpass that of a Princess Chef's table. The overwhelming comments indicate that the Carnival staff and crew members are friendly and committed to providing good service and an enjoyable cruise. And food reviews for the MDR indicate that there's more to the menu than just fried chicken and meat loaf.

Right now, I see at least 10 reviews for every single mass market cruiseline out there about rust and "rundown ships". In my limited experience alone, Monarch of the Seas was WAY more rusty than Carnival Holiday even though Holiday was older. Ive seen rust on Radiance of the Seas and also Freedom of the Seas just a few months out of a 5 year drydock. To come here and play this off as a Carnival problem only is just absurd and you know it.

I find it absolutely hilarious that people complain about rust on a cruise ship though. They could paint it today and the rust would be back within a few days. Its a never ending job and anyone that doesnt know that salt water and salt air and steel doesnt go too well together should probably go back and take a science class, or something.

That's been my impression of Carnival so far. Ships are ugly, rusted, and worn out looking and don't stand up to other lines, but the Carnival staff was substantially better than my last Royal cruise. You'll have a great time, just don't expect to be wowed by the ship itself.

As for maintenance, isn't Carnival the ones who have had nearly all the high profile maintenance related disasters over the last decade?

I don't think it's absurd at all. Rust and some worn out paint is on all ships, yes. But my overall impression just experiencing Carnival ships vs Royal is that the Carnival ships are clearly not kept to the same standards inside and out. Even just seeing them at the dock next to Royal and other lines. It's MY impression. Just like certain hotels are consistently nicer than others, yet they all do "maintenance." The standards are different. It was immediately noticeable that Carnival offers a lesser product as far as the ship itself goes. But there is so much more to cruising than simply ship design/maintenance. It's pretty well established that Carnival does not have the best ships. Even Carnival people seem to readily admit that.

Substitute "wronger doers" for "cheaters"

Yet I'm still sure you'll have an argument justifying the practice.

The intended purpose is to provide a convenient way for passengers to gamble in the casino--- not siphon cash from the ship at a hard cost to the casino and or cruise line.

It seems the OP main complaint is the lack of competition games but it sees to me that five kids and their parents could easily make up their own games. Pools, waterslides, ping pong, cards, trivia, and board games are enough to keep my family entertained.
