Medallion should be simple to use

I'm wondering how the medallion is going to work in the casino. Have always put my card in the card reader and retrieved my money to play on and then when done playing put money back on card. How will this work with the fob?

:D:D:D LOL ! I'm imagining it works like this : Next morning after the casino, you receive a text like this: Hello Molme ! Congratulations on winning $ X amount of dollars last night at the casino ! Let's set you up with the same amount of beginning cash tonight ! Also, we see that at 11:15 and 42 seconds P.M., you ordered 2 scotch and sodas while playing at Roulette Table # 3. We'll have those ready for you at the very same time, same table tonight ! Let us know in the next 5 minutes, so we can charge that to your account. And remember, with all your winnings, there's a sale on diamond rings at the jewelry store. Hope to see you there, from your "Personal Concierge" Thanks for sailing with Princess, and remember now, "Come Back New." . ;p LOL.

Per the President of CCL Corp, the Medallion should be simple to use:

I don't think so. But I hope so :). I am happy I'm not going to be one of the first to use the Madallion. I hope they get all the bugs out before I get to use the Medallion.

Here is how I want it to work. I put in my preferences at home. Then when onboard I can order a Bloody Mary and, in theory, every bartender should already be able to see that I want it "extra spicy". Or a Gin and Tonic should be made with Tanqueray Gin. Also, my wife tends to attend the Knitters and Natters group (often held near Crooner's) in the morning. I want to be able to check, from my stateroom, that she is still there and then order a Bloody Mary to be waiting for me when I get there to meet up with her.

In theory these things should be possible using the medallion. I won't know until our March 18 sailing as our next sailing on October 8 won't have the medallion.

Any idea what happens if you don't receive the medallion before leaving home? We leave home late Nov and will cruise most of Dec on a non medallion ship, then spend a couple weeks in Florida before doing a couple cruises starting Jan 12 on the Regal over 6 weeks after we left home.

They are supposed to be able to issue you one when you check in for the cruise. Of course it will not have your name on it.

Unknown is if once on board you can get one with your name on it, including if you lose the one you have and need a replacement.

Already too much work. Don't sail RCI because I don't want to preplan vacation too much.

Whenever someone says something SHOULD be easy, for me, it never is :(.

To me it's less work than having to tell each bartender what I want ever single time I order. If I can do it once, at my leisure, and have it done "for all time" (or until I manually change it later but I can't see why I would want to do so) then that is far less "work" to me.

People are all different. To each his/her own. I wish the medallion was in place for our 28 day cruise in October. Instead I'll have to wait until March to give it a try. Perhaps it will be a disappointment or maybe it will just be "meh" but just maybe it will be a good thing. I'm keeping a positive attitude for now. :D

So glad to read some people are being positive about it rather than all the naysayers. Pam in CA is the most progressive longstanding Princess cruiser of them all. If only everyone could be the same.

Personally I cannot wait to try it on the Regal at the end of November and the Caribbean in March where along with Thrak I'll be making sure my G&T is made with Tanqueray :D

This "personal concierge" idea has me confused. They talk about for example having a glass of wine delivered automatically to your seat in the theater. Hard to imagine you enter that before leaving home so does that mean every time you want this "personal concierge" service you need to enter your order into a personal device of some kind and then make sure you are in the area you said you would be and don't change your mind on what you want? If you want a different drink each time, would you have to do it all over again? What happens if, for example you want a drink in the theatre but once you get there, no seats are available and you leave? Sounds like it would be just as easy to order the old fashion way (assuming there will be staff wandering around looking to take orders).

Any idea what happens if you don't receive the medallion before leaving home? We leave home late Nov and will cruise most of Dec on a non medallion ship, then spend a couple weeks in Florida before doing a couple cruises starting Jan 12 on the Regal over 6 weeks after we left home.

I'm thinking that an order could possibly be placed via your smart phone? If there are no seats & you leave you wouldn't place any order.

These are Disney's bands. Not sure they are the same until someone rips one apart.

You're right' date=' but Carnival hired [/font']John Padgett ... who created Magic Bands ... away from Disney.

Until the first revenue cruise, everyone is guessing, and/or relying on press releases and/or

statements on the Princess web site. (unclear which of those three is more reliable.)

"That search led Carnival to John Padgett, the creator of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts’ MagicBand, a personalized wristband that unlocks features at Disney parks. Padgett was hired in 2014; Michael Jungen, also involved with the MagicBand, joined the team in 2015."

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/tourism-cruises/article125317259.html

"The same minds behind Disney’s Magic Band designed the Ocean Medallion to bring cruises into the future."

I could be wrong about this......but from the info I received, the medallion seems to act like one of those drugstore "club cards" used by Walgreens, Rite-Aid, CVS, etc. Those drugstore cards track every purchase and your spending habits. Then, the store sends e-mails encouraging you to buy more of those products. Drugstore cards, of course, don't speak and don't display text messages, but they connect with the company's data management systems that do send the advertising.

Princess advertising about Ocean Medallion says that it will serve as your "personal concierge" for food and beverage service. For example, if yesterday you ordered a couple bottles of wine delivered to your stateroom at 5 PM, the medallion technology tracks that ( like a drugstore card), then sends a text or email asking if you want 2 bottles of wine at the same location every day of the cruise. I believe that is what is meant by "personal concierge."

I'm not a techie, but it seems as if the medallion uses NFC ( near field communications) to track your location on the ship, your purchases, and time of day you ordered them. It then connects to the system that sends ad texts to smartphone or emails to laptops ( like a drugstore or supermarket "club card" would do). - EBC

Precisely, there are about three ways to interface with the medallion. You can use the in-room interactive TV, the touch screens around the ship, or your smart phone. I would suspect each of them will have an App to work with the medallion. If you don't want to be bombarded with sales pitches, don't use the App.

For both my cars, there is, in fact, a key that slides in/out of the fob. Yes, that key will open the doors. What I don't see is a gazinta on my crosole to use that key to start the engine in case of fob battery failure. I wonder if there is something tucked away on the steering column--like all my previous cars had.

It's there. You need to read the owners manual. On my car, there is a slot to slide the fob into which powers the fob, etc, etc.

100% agree with this.

setting my preferences once and not having to verbally explain my preference every single order is waaaaaaay less work. and i'm really looking forward to this in action onboard.

this is why i use starbucks mobile ordering every single day. i logged my preferences once and hitting "order" instead of telling a barista every day what i want is far superior.

i'm a creature of habit, i don't drink sugar or dairy, so my drink orders are pretty similar all the time.

I speak from experience with our 2010 Civic. After both key/fobs, AND the valet key were lost, the car was unusable. The cost would have been over $300 for each key/fob from the dealer, and required having it towed to the dealer, making a service appointment, and leaving the car for the day. I instead found a local locksmith who came to our house. He charged just over $200 for the first, and about $50 for each additional I purchased at the same time. I purchased three to be safe.

EDIT: as soon as we sell that car, those missing key/fobs will be found behind a dresser or under another piece of furniture in the house. I can pretty much guarantee it! ;p

Look between the washer and dryer that is where we found one after 1 1/2 years...lucky for us son kept on using just the one key/fob and never lost it.

I love the idea of quickly unlocking my cabin door...I used the "watch" purchased for 4.99 on Anthem(RCI) last March.

But...I am totally inconsistent from one cruise to another and talk about spontaneous. That is one reason why I love anytime/my time whatever:D dining.....

However, sometimes I prefer traditional.....depends on when the sun sets on a sailing or if i am traveling with a family group....Sometimes we include the drink package other times we do not have it, again depends on the itinerary.

So many on CC talk about how nice it is when the bartender or MDR server have drinks waiting......I often have to graciously opt out sometimes...and after one or 2 attempts of trying to second guess my needs the servers usually just start waiting for my request.

I am totally unpredictable.

So I am curious how this new feature will work with the inconsistent cruiser, sounds like it might be more waiting and work for them and me.

The is no Bluetooth in the Magic Bands or Medallions. It is RFID.

There is both.

Here is a teardown of a band, discussing Bluetooth LE

http://www.mouseowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86775

Right from the "mouse mouth" (boca raton?):

"Each MagicBand contains an HF Radio Frequency device and a transmitter which sends and receives RF signals through a small antenna inside the MagicBand and enables it to be detected at short-range touch points throughout Walt Disney World Resort."

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/my-disney-experience/frequency-technology/

The teardown also show a CR-1620 coin cell, which was disclaimed in an earlier post.

There is a core group that does not like change and anytime Princes announces change you will see these long multi thread panic rants be it Medallions, Gastropub, Share, Sabatinis .. In addition Princess needs new passengers that spend money on the ship. Quite frankly they would, and should, fire the 40+ cruiser elite that brags how they don't spend money on the ship. This passenger, no matter how many cruises they have been on are loss leaders.

:p I want to thank all the posters here who are Elite level, Club level, Captains Circle, etc., including ColoCruiser, FloridaLover, 8 Furry Paws, and many others who politely and patiently answer questions they've heard dozens of times. I think that these seasoned cruisers do more to sell Princess cruises here and in their social circles than many professionals in the travel industry. I'm sure that Princess really appreciates their expertise and loyalty.

When we decided to book a cruise, we lurked at Cruise Critic for awhile and read everything we could. The knowledgeable, seasoned Princess posters convinced us. That level of knowledge sells a cruise better than a travel agent or the people at Princess Customer Service.

I'm not "panicked" about the Medallion; I think I'm just skeptical. It's billed as the ultimate in technology, real StarTrek kind of stuff. But, it appears to just be a combination of a G.P.S. , a key fob, and a Costco Club Card. :p LOL. I really don't need a device that tracks me around the ship to see what shops or dining rooms I'm using so it can monitor my spending habits and send volumes of spam texts/ email.

Plus, if you look at the cruise fares for 2018, it appears that the costs have increased about 30% for ships using the medallion. The Panama Canal cruises, which have been on our lifetime bucket lists, are $500 more next year. There's no doubt that all cruise passengers will pick up the cost of this technology. The company is not losing money on anyone who pays for a medallion cruise. -- EBC

Prices are up, but I am not sure you can attribute that to the medallions.

Stronger demand for cruises on a number of cruise lines probably has more to do with that.

The medallion doesn't have a display. Unless you're carrying your smart phone with you, you won't be receiving any spam texts/emails.

Here is my take on the upcoming medallion program. I am all for it. If it makes my life onboard easier and simpler then let's do it. I already use my iPhone to access my hotel room when I travel for business. I use my iPhone for my airline boarding pass. I use paypal and apple pay at the store. So to have this service available seems natural. For those who say prices have gone up; (like Princess is charging more to help pay for initial operation of this program); I disagree. I booked a cruise on Caribbean Princess for Feb 2019 and Prices are no more expensive for the Caribbean sailings for my cruise. You have a wrist watch so the medallion with a wrist strap makes it easier to get on and off the ship; not to mention you won't have to store it on a lanyard or in your pocket or purse. Thanks for listening

Interesting thread. That I'm coming late to. I'm all for technology and want to try it. Questions, though, if anyone knows answers.

1) do you get a medallion for each cruise or are you expected to not lose it between cruises?

2) if new on each time I'm guessing you don't have to reprogram your preferences?

3) please tell me these touchscreens around the ship aren't going to light up as I go past with my name and offers like some sort of sci-fi movie. Cause that I'd hate.

Thanks.

How many people could be walking by the touchscreen at the same time? If a large party walked by it would look like a pin ball machine. No, I doubt it would light up as you walked by. Now, I wouldn't be surprised if something like this happens. If you walk up to the touchscreen and press a start button, the touchscreen might tell you that there are some messages for you.

I would think that for Privacy Reasons, the touchscreen is not going to display your name or call out to you as you walk by.
